What King Will...

Make the biggest statistical improvments this year? There was a time when K-Mart was thought of as a borderline bust and he has proven to be a very, very good player. Bonzi's injury and stupidity for not resigning can be thanked for the emergence of KM.

I would say Cisco is poised to be the guy who will breakout this season, but I think if Douby gets some minutes, he might be a pretty good scorer/shooter.

The guy who I say will make the most gains all-around though is Spencer Hawes.

Thoughts?

All else being equal, it seems obvious that the least experienced players would tend to improve the fastest. However, in Sactown it's traditional that the less experienced players don't get more than a few minutes a game unless there are injuries and/or major trades. And, even if a rookie improves dramatically, we have no prior NBA year to compare to, so we can't really prove that they're getting better. That makes Hawes the #1 candidate, unless you have a whole lot of faith in Douby's role on he team (which I don't).

But it ultimately boils down to injuries, trades, and coaching decisions, and I'm not about to guess at the whos and whens involved.

John Salmons, after Artest is gone. (OHPLEASE.OHPLEASE.OHPLEASE.)

Hawes or Garcia... We all know what Garcia did when starting last year (17+ppg), and if he is given the opportunity to do so again for a full season then I think Garcia might surprise a lot of us.

If Garcia is coming off the bench the whole year then look for Hawes to improve the most.

But if Artest is traded and Garcia gets the nod to start over Salmons then I think it will be Garcia.

its hard to pick but ill just state out what i think might happen and theoretically "break out" years for said players

Hawes: if geoff is telling the truth about accelerating his growth then he WILL have a break out year (notice i didnt say MIGHT or probably) and IF he comes to training camp bulked up, with that sky hook he told the press he would work on then no doubt he will have a great year

Martin: this guy keeps on improving every year, if he manages to add a little defense to his game like playing the passing lanes and having extra energy for defense, also a decent court vision (like 3 to 4 assists per game) with an average of 23ppg 4.1rpg then he can make a run for the allstar game (assuming people take notice)

Garcia: last years performance indicates that he has matured and learned his role, assuming that he gets better, gets a better feel for the game then he might take the starting role from Salmons (assuming artest is traded) if artest stays then he has to battle salmons for the 6th man position, hopefully he improves and knocks off ginobili for sixth man

Quincy Douby: tweener, too short for a shooting guard, and not enough handles to be a point, if he manages to be a shut down type of guard on the point (him and garcia can play together and garcia takes point) and manages to sink more threes than last year then im happy, the guys got long arms so he better utilize it

Sheldem Williams: too slow and too small to be a PF, but he has that nastiness and bulk to muscle his way inside, if he manages to stay away from thos 15 foot jumpers he shoots and bruises his way inside then he can be a viable trade bait,

UDRIH: getting that 5 mil pay check that raise he so deserves.... now its time to prove why he deserves it....wishful thinking he elevates further then we will be talking how underpaid the guy is (lets hope this is the case)

the rookies lets put another topic after the first summer league game :P

Im am so sick and tired of us saying Garcia is ready for a breakout year. He needs consistent time and we all know he is ready to get aout 30 minutes a game or at least 25 on a nightly basis. But the fact of the matter is, we only seem to REALLY play the guy when we have injuries.

Artest, Garcia and Salmons.

One of them has got to go and i dont care who it is so we can get another point guard and or Big man. Obviously we would have to add Mikki Moore or shelden though.

Ummm, I think that Garcia was a regular part of the rotation last year. At least for the most part. I haven't checked his minutes, but they were probably decent. If he continues to improve, and if Artest is traded, he'll certainly get more minutes this coming year. Then we'll see.

This is an important year for Garcia. At the end of this next year the Kings will have to make a qualifing offer to keep him, and I believe the offer would have to be around 4 or 5 million. So he needs to step up this next season and prove he's worth it.

Garcia's qualifying offer is just under $2.9M. My guess, however, is that what he's shown in even his relatively limited minutes will be worth a good chunk of an MLE to somebody, and if we could extend him for 4-5 years at $4.5M per before he hits free agency, I'd be pretty happy about it. I mean, you look at what Kevin's getting and think about Cisco essentially being the current heir-apparent at the SF (as well as a solid 6th man if somebody else comes along) and that kind of deal is a bargain.

Thanks for the info. I didn't bother to look it up. I agree with you on what someone will offer him when he's a free agent. My point is, its an important year for him to make his mark. Of course, if he has a tremendous break out year, he gets even more expensive for the Kings to sign.

Garcia had the breakout year last season. It was the two years prior that a lot of us thought he might not be in the NBA for a very long time. When Garcia came in and started he played VERY well averaging more than 17 a game which is close to Martin in his first full year starting (19+ppg).

Another reason I said Garcia is because of the Louisville connection with Theus. Theus likes Garcia's game, and has said so on many occasions. He says Garcia is one of the hardest workers, and in Theus's system that will get him minutes.. Now if Artest is traded, and if Garcia takes the starting job from Salmons then Garcia will have probably the most improvement of any player on the Kings.

I am thinking it will be Beno. You will see an improvment in his stats yes. But more noticably I think you will see a comfort level in Beno this season you didn't see last season. The fact that he decided not to play in the Olympics for Sloveinia says alot to me. Knowing that he is in Las-Vegas with Shapiro and Martin lets me know he is working on being better and with Martin there with him they may indeed develop a chemistry that will improve both their games. No matter how you look at it none of the aformentioned things will hurt. No where to go but up.
