What If We Don't Get Davis or MKG?

Say we land in the 3rd spot and Davis and MKG get drafted ahead of us. I was thinking we could trade the pick. If Golden State's pick ends up in the 8th spot this year (the pick belongs to Utah), would you trade back with Utah?

This is the trade that popped into my head.

Utah gets:
Thornton
3rd overall pick

Sacramento gets:
Favors
8th overall pick

It's possible that Barnes falls to us at 8 which would be a good place to take him other than that I think we draft best player available.

With some free agent signings and releases the lineup for next year would look like this:

Dragic/Thomas/Fredette
Evans/Williams
Kirilenko/Garcia/Outlaw/Honeycutt
Favors/Thompson/Hayes
Cousins/Whiteside
(BPA Rookie)

With our 8 man rotation being Dragic, Evans, Kirilenko, Favors, Cousins, Thomas, Williams, Thompson.

This could be an insurance plan if we aren't able to grab one of those two rookies.

I like the idea. I think that this draft is deep enough that the step down from 3 to 8 might not make a big difference, and if Barnes were available there that would be a pretty nice haul (not sure he'd be there, though). The biggest problem is that I really don't see Utah dealing Favors. They love him. Think about how much everybody around here loves him - don't imagine the Jazz are sleeping on their own guy. I think he's almost the farthest thing they've got from on the block, and there are probably only a limited number of guys he'd be available for - Marcus Thornton and the #3 pick not being on that list.

Yeah I'm not sure how much it would take, but I thought Thornton and the 3rd would be pretty good. Utah is pretty weak at SG (Bell, Miles, Burks). Thornton would be a nice starter for them and help them stretch the floor for when Millsap and Jefferson are working down low. They could take Robinson with the third pick and have a nice replacement for Favors. It would also let them keep a strong big man rotation (Millsap, Jefferson, Robinson, Kanter).

I'm not quite sure who would be there at 8. Barnes, Sullinger, Lamb, P. Jones, T. Jones, Zeller, Henson, Marshall all come to mind.

I guess we can put it this way. Would Utah rather have Favors and J. Lamb or Thornton and Robinson?

3rd pick would be interesting in terms of trade potential. Also there is a strong possiblity that MKG would still be there depending on the order of teams, just wanted to throw that in there to help me get through the day.:)
Edit: Utah is not trading favors (would you?)

Considering they have Millsap, Jefferson, and Kanter, it doesn't seem crazy.

I don't know, MT at his salary is not that close to Favors, so probably not worth it to them moving up 5 spots (at best) either.
I would do it in a heartbeat though, as I think somebody like Terrence Jones will be available even at 10.

Right style of thought, but couple of things:

1) depends on how Drummond does in workouts. Drummond's frosh season was a lot like Favors' frosh season actually. Both disappointed, but still ahd a world of phsycial talent. Drummond could be a perfect player for us...or he could be a smaller Thabeet. Depends on what he looks like in workouts.

2) Thornton is locked into a cheap contract. We are going to have tos tart lookign at that sort of thing here soon with Evans and Cousins coming up to get paid. A problem with getting an Anthony Davis or whoever too -- we are simply stacking up too many young high picks (yes, oh poor us) and in a couple of years, we aren't going to be able to afford all of them and are going to be in danger of losing one or more just due to money. So guys like Thornton that are locked inot reasonable long term deals become handy. Because you saw what hapened last summer with DeAndre Jordan and whatnot. If Favors plays well for us, somebody WILL throw $10+mil at him.

Favors lack of productivity in his freshman year was due as much or more about the incredibly incompetent guards that he played with as his undeveloped skills. Favors also has a reputation for a very high work ethic and character. I haven't heard the same thing about Drummond.

Spot on! However I will say this. Drummond has more talent in his little finger than Thabeet has in his entire body. Its sort of like, Drummond has all the equipment, he's just not using it. Thabeet just doesn't have the same equipment.

I sometimes think that passion or desire is as much of a "talent" as any of the physical attributes normally associated with the word. if the electrical impulse isn't there to contract the muscles, then what good are the muscles?

I don't think anyone will know about Drummond until a couple of years have passed.
Let's just say that if he had been a player coming from Nigeria, instead of the highly touted HS player, no-one would be considering him a potential #2 pick based on his UCONN play.

If we have the 2nd pick and take Drummond over MKG or Robinson I'll have a hard time handling it.
If we have the 5th pick and take Drummond over Barnes/Beal/Henson/Sullinger/Zeller/P.Jones/T.Jones,ect. then I'll be willing to let things play out, because the upside and physicality is there.
