What Does DA Want in the Draft?

is this in any way surprising to you, that there's a discrepancy between the denver nuggets' former assistant GM who prizes offense first and many of us at kf.com who have been clamoring for any measure of defensive consistency across the course of the last eight years?

edit: that said, i fully expect PDA to take BPA on draft day, and i fully endorse such a strategy, at this point. the kings' biggest holes remain on the defensive end, but veteran talent is better-suited to filling in some of those gaps. for that reason, i'm also very supportive of the kings potentially trading their draft pick in order to bolster their roster with further experience...

Is it a surprise to me that DA is going offense? No, it isn't.

Its not impossible we try to trade for him. But I only say that because of the early season reports we were interested...despite it seeming inconceivable that the Warriors would be.

Ben...who knows. But you certainly don't turn your nose up at a young stud for Ben's sake after the rookie season he just had. I just think of Klay more as wish fulfillment than anything we can really get. But who knows. Maybe the Warriors still want to get Barnes into the starting lineup. Maybe they really really want Carl back. See? Wish fulfillment. :p

Now that is wishful thinking. I can only hope. Ironically, they could probably use him right now. If healthy of course. But then if everyone was healthy then they wouldn't need him.

Klay Thompson had a hell of a game tonight against the Clippers. He's an extremely confident guy who can do it all. I was most surprised with his improvement on defense and putting the ball on the floor and taking it to the rim. Now that was an impressive display. I'm a huge fan of him now. However, if Ben Mac can get some confidence from within, I don't see why he can be a Klay type player with more athleticism. I'll just say that Ben Mac's potential is higher but for some reason I think his lack of confidence will get the best of him unfortunately

We should also think abou trading some pieces for a second round pick or two. The bucks have 3! I'm sure they'd gladly trade away one.
Call me biased but I like my Serbian boy that just declared for the draft:
Nikola Jokic. A big man who has a sick and consistent jumper from outside. Check out his video from the Nike Summit where he played very well. He's also got some slick post moves and is a good passer because he played pg/playmaker when he was younger. Has a wingspan of 7'3 and is prolly going to be a 7 footer when all is said and done. He's a decent shot blocker but not amazing because of the lack of athleticism. However, he has a high BBall IQ where he positions himself well and boxes out extremely well which will make him a decent shot blocker.
He's kind of like a Pau Gasol body type and jump shooter just with more range and stroke but less defense.

Some are even comparing him to a young Dirk....

Wouldn't be a bad second round pickup. We could desperately use a big man. Most tall European players do a decent job in the NBA even as role players because of their good work ethic and positive attitude. Something this team seriously lacks.

What's Serbian/Montenegro basketball looking like in terms of NBA talent atm we only got Pek who actually plays and the other two Rad and the PG in GS never play basically. At one point we had 6-8 guys all getting regular mins and a couple All Stars in Vlade/Peja. Will there be another influx of talent or more of the same as it is now?

Not Necessarilly just Serb/Montenegrin talent, but there's plenty of ex-Yugoslavia talent in this draft and also coming up the youth ranks. This draft has Jusuf Nurkic, Dario Saric, Nikola Jokic (as mentioned above), Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Vasilije Micic as prospects.

There's a Bosnian 16-year-old playing for Barca looking to enter the NBA soon and also Nedim Dedovic (brother of Nihad Dedovic, 2k14 players may have seen him on Bayern) who will become better than his brother is another big talent.

Also, I'd actually like picking up either Nurkic or Jokic as back-up big men, although Nurkic has climbed extremely high up draft boards (lottery) compared to the beginning of the season.

It's actually looking horrible right now. We're in the decline sadly. Some of our biggest talents turned out to be garbage so we're kind of stuck with decent players like Vasilije Micic (above average passer but a forever role player in NBA--think Marko Jaric), Nedovic (chose the wrong team or the wrong team chose him), Jokic (who has potential but lacks certain fundamentals that prevents him from being a top notch PF/C), and a couple other garbage talents.

Really, it's Croatia right now that's booming with star potential. Saric's stock has gone up like a crazy mofo. Knocked out Red Star Belgrade single handily in Adriatic League and took the championship for Croatia and his club for the first time in god knows when. Not only that but he was pretty close to a quadruple double in that game which is nice to see as his defensive game was always a question but he seems to be turning out quite nice. I honestly don't see a reason why he can't be the next Pau Gasol, Dirk, or Mark Gasol. He just needs to put on a little more weight and he'll be a hell of a player. I'd say give him 2 seasons before he really begins to shine. I see him going lottery for sure if he declares (has declared?). I had my doubts but he's looking like the real deal right about now and I'm glad that all the hype has amounted to something for now. Great work rate from the kid.

Mario Hezonja is the other talent from Croatia with freakish athleticism for a white European guard. He can play the 1 or 2 quite easily and has the height advantage when playing pg. He is a similar player to Goran Dragic just with more upside IMHO. I think he'll be a top 5 draft pick next summer.

As for Serbia/Montenegro/Slovenia/Bosnia
There's some potential talents coming through the 13-17 age range but that's just all speculation.
The player that I am most disappointed about is Nenad Miljenovic who was supposed to be the next big thing from Europe. A Parker/Ginobili type of player. American Colleges were drooling over his prospect but he chose Partizan Belgrade instead and it went downhill from there. However, I think it's his work rate or lack of that really did him in. Sad...

Since AS kings have been the worst team in 3 points in both ends. A top-2 deffensive team in the paint. The worst team in TO and the worst in assists. And the best in rebounds. So we need the playmaking and the size (to IT play as SG some minutes) of kyle anderson, the deffense of marcus smart, and the shooting of stauskas. And that is impossible. James young could be a good fit. But you must always draft for talent, trade for need

Whoa, #2 in paint defense, #1 in rebounding?

We dont need a shot blocker, we need a perimeter defender(s). And play making of course. Not surprising considering our entire guard rotation is IT and 2 rookies.

PDA gets us a Thabo type (lots of 3 and D guys in the mid 1st to 2nd round) and we're looking a lot better defense wise.

Yes, 2º in paint defense. Bulls are the 1º.

1º in rebounds%, 1º in deffensive rebounds%, and 4º in offensive rebounds. Demarcus is the best rebounder in the league: 1º in deffensive rebounds% and 3º/4º in
rebounds%. He is not a better offensive rebounder because he is a go to guy and people like deandre jordan or drummond needs offensive rebounds in his offence, boogie don't.

It makes sence but i wouldn't pick a deffense +3 point like tabo with a top-7 pick. Maybe with a late lottery pick. Remember draft for talent, trade for need. I would like to draft julius randle specially if he is a better shooter in workout that he has shown in ncaa. Just like demarcuss. Becouse i think he is a freat player.

Pete alluded to needing more shooting, I can see him pulling the trigger on a player like Stauskas. I don't know how I would feel about drafting Nik but I wouldn't be upset either because he really improved his game from last year compared to this year.

Overall the Kings are the 2nd worst in opponent FG% <5 ft.

I would really like us to make a play for Shaun Livingston. He's a FA, who shall likely command decent interest and salary, but not something outrageous. With the huge luxury tax that the Nets are already committed to, coupled with the fact that the team is not really in the upper upper tier, might make them reluctant to match a decent offer (he shall be a FA, so Nets don't really have a "right" to match an offer. I just think that given his comeback there, a PG like Kidd as coach who specifically requested for him, greater chance of moving to postseason (and deeper into postseason) in the East, he might be interested in staying there, if the offer is similar.

With us, he's likely to get significant playing time (depends of course on lot of factors; if IT stays, how the kids develop, whom we draft). He also meets our needs perfectly, a big guard who plays good defense, and is a pass first guard who can shoot from outside (though his shooting % is all over the place, likely a reflection of the inconsistent career he has had due to injuries).

I know this thread is related to draft, and this might be getting discussed somewhere else. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

What do you think about glenn robinson?
He is proyected as a 2º round, but I like him. I think that he is underrated. He won't be a star, but I'm sure he will be a solid competitive player, and a perfect fit. He is a quite good deffender and he has improve a lot his C&S. Maybe he is the perfect player for us. But I want nurkic (twin towers).

i watched a couple of michigan games, and he didn't impress me in any of them offensively. he looks like an nba scrub on that end. i didn't really study his defense because i was more interested in watching stauskas.

Last year I didn't like him because he was overhyped and for example he can not shoot. But this year I've watched a player who has improved a lot his shootind ability. In fact, he made some important 3 points in MM. I think he could be a kind of bruce bowen or sefolosha, deffense and corner C&S 3 points. But I'm not sure, he intrigues me. For this reason, I think he could be a good 2º round option and I ask you what do you think. Maybe i'm wrong, perhaps my eye don't lie to me.

Give them JT/DWill/pick for McGee and there pick then draft Stauskus. At 6'6 with 6'7 wingspan he can play 12 minuets as back up SF. We would come out the draft with more shooting and a shot blocker.

That's a pretty bad trade. McGee is a moron that can barely stay on the court so not sure he's worth a really good 3rd big plus a young prospect, plus we trade down in the draft for the right?

I like McGee despite but that's just too much. Maybe JT/Landry/pick for McGee/Fournier/plus 2 picks.

we'd be giving up too much in a serviceable big in JT, dwills 7m expiring + top 10 pick for mcgee. we'd be making shaqtn a fool weekly lol. i'm not a huge fan of any of the players on denvers squad.. gm feels the same which is why there is a fire sale going on.

Oh good god no.. McGee is terrible, and stupid to boot.

No on McDermott, no on Stauskus, I believe we can find a 3 point shooter who is proven in free agency such as a Morrow or similar player and probably at a cheaper cost than the 7th pick's salary. I'd rather take Smart or Vonleh or Gordon or other player that might fall to us. Smart has NBA potential to be a difference maker.....his defense alone upgrades our roster.
