What do you guys think of Meyers Leonard...

Last time we traded down we ended up with Jimmer...plus our very own brickasaur, Salmons. And we lost Beno. We have the number five pick in a fairly talented draft. KEEP IT.

Well trading down aside, I like Leonard. He's a very good athlete and a legit 7 footer. He definitely has the potential to be a starter in the NBA at some point. So if your betting on the future, then he's a nice pickup. At the moment he's a little rough around the edges, but capable of logging some minutes off the bench. He does have some skills. He has a nice 15 foot jumper, and has a hookshot with either hand. But his footwork needs improving, and he needs to add muscle. He did block almost 2 shots a game, so he has the ability to intimidate around the basket.

I don't want to make him sound better than he is. He's mostly potential because of his athleticism and length. And while he has some skills, he's also very raw.

Nice assessment. I think he has potential too. He does look raw but athletic 7 footers don't come around every day.

I've already posted in another thread that I really like Meyers, that he should be a top ten pick.

To me, he has qualities that you can't teach - height, size, shooting touch, and athleticism; and the skill to go with it. He needs to go to a team that appreciates a traditional center. He's still in a stage where a bad system or a small-balling coach can really set back his development. But if everything goes right, he can be really good, not franchise player good but has the potential to be a borderline All-Star.

Because of Cousins, he is definitely intriguing. Will he hit the offensive glass hard? Will he be in constant foul trouble? There is a certain amount of aggression lacking in his game that makes me think he could easily go the way of Patty O'Bryant.

Can't say I'm that huge a fan, but he's a first rounder for sure. He looks the part of a NBA center, and has put himself above the minimal threshold of skills to be accepted into the first round.

I wonder if he'll amount to much, though. DX says his best case scenario is Tiago Splitter, so I'd say he's probably half as good as Splitter is, for what that's worth.

You know, I'd really like to know what people base their opinions on. Leonard was a better all around player than Drummond was last season, and yet, he's delegated to being only half as good as Splitter, however good that happens to be. Here's a kid with above average athleticism, legitimate height and length, whose an explosive leaper around the basket. He has the frame to carry at least another 15 to 20 pounds of muscle. Had he played for Kentucky or North Carolina, I suspect he would be rated higher. But he played on an underacheiving team at Illinois.

He comes with a track record thats pretty good, despite where he played. Patty O'Bryant is a player most people hadn't even heard of until he blew away some GM's at the combine and the team workouts. He definitely has some rough edges to his game, but he's still very young, and played in a lousy system at Illinois. In a league devoid of good big men, he certainly has a chance to be a good player in the future. I'm curious, do some of you know how good an athlete he is? Let me put it another way. He's twice the athlete that Spencer Hawes is. He's not a freak athlete, but he's right below that level.

Unless he does very poorly in team workouts, I can see Leonard picked with one of the late lottery picks. It all depends on the teams needs of course. But when it starts looking like the talent level of the player you take at 10 could be similar to what you can get later in the first round, teams probably like to take a chance on getting an athletic big man. He's probably less of a project than Hassan Whiteside and has a lot better shooting touch.

If you're trying to convince folks that Meyers Leonard is worth drafting, you might not want to compare him to Patrick O'Bryant!
