What are FO priorities for spending?

#1
We have cap space to acquire players.

We have a commitment by ownership and the FO to spend significantly to improve the team.

We need a new CBA to know how much we have and how much players will demand and how much we want to spend.

First money to go to Dalembert or his replacement - lots of money but we have part in present salary.
We need a decision on how long we are committed to PG/SG of Evans/Thornton. That decision tells us how much and what quality of a veteran PG we spend on. If we go with them then our greater investment can be in an upgrade at SF.

So, three things seem determinants in our spending, they are shown in their apparent order:
1) CBA signed and sealed.
2) Dalembert resigned or replaced.
3) Decision on how long on Evans/Thornton combo use,
a) Short term, then put first money in vet PG.
b) Longer term, then put first money on vet SF.

After that, fill in as necessary.

It seems too simple when stated this way. I would enjoy others observations, suggestions, criticisms, etc.

Don't forget we will need to talk about large contracts for Cousins and Reke in a couple/few years and if we use it all up and our core splits whats the point? We need to spend for what we need/want and not spend needlessly just to spend of course...

That's why you sign guys to three or four year contracts. That way they're expiring right as Cousins and Tyreke are due to be resigned.

And as Bajaden said in another thread, we have no idea what the new CBA does for future contracts. To argue it is pointless till the new CBA is signed.

If I were GM my first priority would be to try and steal Marc Gasol from Memphis. I don't buy for a second that he couldn't play with Cousins. I think he's the best overall player in this year's free agent market. I'd rather have him than Dalembert. A lot of people probably don't realize that Gasol actually blocked more shots per 36 minutes than Dalembert did last year. I'd bet he did it with a heck of a lot less goaltends, too. He's just an all around better player than Dalembert. Plus he's about five years younger so he'd fit in as a long term part of the Kings core. I would throw a fat contact his way. Make Memphis go over the cap if they want to keep him. A core of Cousins/Gasol/Evans/Fredette/Thornton could be scary in a few years. You wouldn't even need anyone else. Just sign Gasol and you're set.

The future I would arrange under the Petrie rein. When dreaming and schemeing why not do it right, my way. As you see we have either Thornton or Evans but not both. That helps pay the heavy cost of getting the two pieces I suggest. Please tell me I'm a genius or, short of that, where improvements can be made.

PG -
1) Older vet experienced at distributing, running offense (not big money)
2) Jimmer Fredette
3) Isaiah Thomas

SG -
1) Thornton or Evans
2) Garcia
3) Salmons

SF -
1) Best veteran all-star or best alternative (big money)
2) Honeycutt

PF -
1) Cousins
2) Jackson

C -
1) Dalembert
2) Thompson
3) Whiteside

I'm sorry, but this doesn't even make sense. Did Omri/Donte evaporate into thin air? Where did they go, and what did we get in return?

Thorton or Reke? That's not dealing in reality. They'll both be on the roster. Why waste time planning for something which won't happen?

Salmons is not lower on the depth chart than Cisco. Please. He was brought in to be our sf, not 3rd string sg. And if you did want Salmons/Cisco at the 2, why would you not resign Thornton? They aren't better options.

I'd still like either AK or Prince, and put Salmons on the bench and tell him to deal with it. But you have Salmons lower on the depth chart than Honeycutt and Cisco. Not happening.

Is there any set date on when we will know whether or not we are losing Dally?
No. They can't even attempt to resign him until the CBA stuff is settles. We're supposed to know by Thursday if there's going to be a lockout or not. If there isn't, I suspect we'll find out fairly soon what the deal with Dalembert is.

Thanks for your comments. Sorry about Casspi/Greene. My overlooking them reflects my view that if we took the value of Evans or Thornton and some others we could get a big money big production small forward making our two forwards expendable. The reality part of "Evans or Thornton" is that a really good SF would cost that much, and if we had such we wouldn't care, at least not Win- Loss- wise. It is unlikely BUT if that was the plan, it could happen. The likely alternative, a long term Evans/Thornton one-two hasn't excited much confidence in me. Long term I want a good point guard floor leader plus Evans at the two. Just wishful thinking on my part.
