What an abysmal offseason.

I'd also like to know where this supposed star player would have fit within the offense that we didn't sign because of either incompetence by our reigning EOY Monte McNair or Vivek's greedy little hands.

Again, I've still not heard valid suggestions about what you would have done. Gimme the exact scenarios.

The closest thing I've heard is that this offseason was a complete disaster because we didn't get a bench player three and D guy (despite bringing Kessler back and drafting two very three and D type wings, and adding Duarte). It was a disaster because we got B- three and d guys instead of B+ three and D guys. Fire the entire front office.
the apparently you are not listening closely as I already told you what I would have done….

my original plan would have been to keep the pick. Everything we did we could have done except trade for Duarte and maybe increased Sabonis a bit less. Mostly because I think we are still not a free agent destination.

if I thought I could sign a free agent then I would have done what Monte did. Ideally it would have been one of Grant, Hart or Johnson. But I would have been sure I wasn’t getting played. And yes it was going to cost between 25-30M for a free agent which is why I would have kept the pick.

Hadn't heard you mentioning those names but that could entirely be due to my mental shortcomings.

So are you playing grant at the three and moving Keegan to the four? Who's your PF? I'm assuming you let HB go.

This is an EXTREMELY high risk situation because you're assuming he meshes, and you've committed near max money to him for (likely) five years (that's what he got).

Is he gonna be ok being the number four option on our team when Keegan takes another step forward next year?

name the 3 and D types we drafted??? End of the second round guys are not generally 3&D.

Slawson is likely a 2-way and Jones is a 2 and not long enough to be a stopper.

compare Prosper. / Jones
Wingspan 7’ 2”. / 6’ 8”
Lane time. 10.59 (4) /. 11.04 (29)
Standing vert. 35 (2) / 30.5 (29)

In terms of size and quickness for a 3 Prosper is an A- and Jones is a C in terms of needed size and athleticism. Now granted it’s not everything but it helps and people also raved about his defense at the combine. I think Jones could be a great back up guard to replace TD. He isn’t going to be a starting 3.

no I keep the pick and nothing stops me from resigning the players I signed except Duarte who is an overlap with Jones and Ellis regardless. ( Monte seems to like sending 2nds for guards he discards).

my roster is
Domas/ Queta / Holmes
Keegan/ Lyles / Sasha
Barnes or Kessler or Prosper
Huerter/ Jones or Ellis
Fox / Monk / Mitchell

2 way.
Slawson / Kabengele

if I traded the pick and went all on say Grant then yes I play him at the 3 on defense.

You care way too much about measurements. I watched both players play several times. I felt Colby Jones was the superior player and the better defender.

Sacramento Kings: D+
When the Kings gave away the No. 24 overall pick just to dump Richaun Holmes, visions of Draymond Green or Kyle Kuzma started to look somewhat realistic. Instead? The Kings ran it back. They re-signed Harrison Barnes and Trey Lyles and used the bulk of their remaining cap space to renegotiate-and-extend Domantas Sabonis. The only significant outside additions for the Kings this summer were Chris Duarte and EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov. They'll help, but the reality facing the Kings was that a) they gave away a meaningful asset to create cap space and b) with a new Sabonis deal coming, this was their last real opportunity to actually use it. The opportunity cost of running it back and adding Duarte and Vezenkov was the chance to add a long-term difference-maker, and if the Kings were going to use their cap space to extend Sabonis, they should have at least gotten a bit of a discount. They did him a solid by paying him early, but they still certainly paid sticker price.

It's definitely a missed opportunity to add assets when the team has cap space.
That's easy to say, impossible to improve unless MM states he had a viable opportunity on the table and passed.

Fact is, none of us know what was really possible.

It's easy to claim there were opportunities because of the cap space. But the cap space in itself doesn't automatically equate to viable opportunities in terms of acquiring new players.

What if the cost was too high??

As things turned out, the cap room was used to retain and extend players the team wanted to keep. Suppose MM had used the cap space to add an expensive FA or player via trade. Wouldn't that in turn mean he couldn't extend Sabonis, who would have been a FA at seasons end? Wouldn't that mean he couldn't have extended Harrison Barnes, who was a FA in the here and now? Couldn't it have resulted in no Vezenkov this season?

If any of all of the above didn't happen, couldn't that been viewed as a "missed opportunity" WRT to our cap space?

So the only difference between the roster you come up with and the one Monte comes up with is Prosper at pick 24.
So unless Prosper end up being prime Pippen in his rookie year and be a DPOY candidate right away, I don’t see how it would change a a whole lot for the make up of this team. That’s some lofty expectation on a rookie 24th pick

Abysmal is a very strong word. I’d say underwhelming.
Why underwhelming?

I get that many fans had delusions of adding a star player, but beyond that disappointment -- what was really underwhelming about what the KINGS did?

Using the 30-35M cap space to lure an expensive FA or trade for a star player means there is no $$$ left to retain the players they already have.

Sometimes it seems some fans think cap space means "opportunity add new players" when often it means "opportunity to retain the good players you already have".

In the KINGS case, one of their star players (that they just traded away a future star to acquire) was about to be an UFA at the end of the upcoming season. They HAD to extend him. That alone was going to use up a large percentage of the recently acquired cap space.

Does anybody really believe the KINGS were wrong to extend Domas?? I doubt very many believe that.

So what are we really talking about here? The re-signing of Harrison Barnes. That ended up costing 17M for this upcoming season.

Which upgrade were the KINGS going to get at or near that same 17M price tag?

Jerami Grant ended up costing nearly twice that amount. Kuzma (who everyone knows I thought was wasted money) ended up signing for roughly 8M more per season.

Which FA could the KINGS have signed under the cap to still sign Vezenkov, extend Domas, re-sign Lyles, etc.? And would that FA wanted to have come to SAC??

I believe there is WAY too much overreaction going on here. Stemming from unrealistic expectations.

Let's also keep in mind that Malik Monk will be an UFA after this season and I'm sure that reality also factored into McNair's plans.

All in all, the KINGS retained one of their two star players (both Fox and Sabonis are locked in for at least the next 3 seasons), retained a coveted 2-way starter in Harrison Barnes, retained a key reserve in Lyles, and manage to add Vezenkov and Duarte to the already established core.

More so, they accomplished all the above w/o going into cap hell.

I really don't see any justification to label the KINGS offseason negative in any way shape or form. If I'm wrong, please, by all means somebody outline a compelling case to the contrary. I'm all ears eyes.

It's not even over yet.

Monte could still sign someone over these next few days so I'd even say it's too early to judge

True, something else could happen.

But assuming what we've already got is all we get, it was a successful offseason.

Imagine being in a position where they couldn't re-sign Domas (note, he did accept less than the max) and more likely to also lose Malik next offseason? All while signing someone like Grant or Kuzma to an super overvalued contract?

Now that would have been an abysmal offseason.

Mainstream media thought last year that we would still be in the gutter as the season started. Their views on the Kings are bupkis for the most part.

My opinion is that Monte had other plans but the players or teams wanted too much, picks, money, Keegan.

Id rather run the core back instead of mortgaging our future and chemistry for Beal? Kuz? Grant? OG? Maybe needle moving in the headlines more than on the court.

I expect midseason move(s).

if the rumors are to be believed, the Kings wanted Kuzma but he wanted a more prominent role than what Monte envisioned for him.

looking more at 2-3 years out and his potential hopes for growth as Fox hits free agency. If this team is back in the lottery it could well lose Fox. To be good we have to fill the long standing weakness on wing defense.

All this banter is entertaining, I guess.

But the bottom line is that Monte dealt the hand and now it is up to Coach Brown to play it. We are all only observers.
Technically we are message board participants and discuss by design. If we only observed this place would shut down.

People are far too reactionary and impatient in the world of sports. We just completed our best season in nearly two decades. We were able to rebuild hope, culture, and a foundation to build upon. That team that revitalized a fan base and grabbed the attention of the national media has remained and been retained. They were the best offensive team in history in Mike Brown’s first year. That same team is all here. On top of that, that team is young and growing and has added more youth and shooting. Breaking up the core in any way or potentially interfering with the culture to add something shiny or splashy is asinine. I am failing to see in what sense that is anything other than a smashing success. Did you not watch last season? If your gripe is really down to the fact that we chose to prioritize extending Domas and HB and bringing over Sasha over a late first round pick who you liked ( Kings obviously didn’t ) then I don’t know what to say haha. I wish you the best but I am damn sure pleased you are not involved in constructing the Kings.
