What About Steve Smith as a King??

Purple Reign

Starter
I know that he is 35 soon to be 36 years old. But the cat can still play and most of all shoot. He would be an outstanding backup small forward for Peja. He is on the Bobcats, and according to Sportsline.com is one of those December 15th players that signed a new deal, but is now elgible to trade.

STEVE SMITH VITALS
6'8'' - 221LBS

CAREER 35 PERCENT 3 PT SHOOTER (but is currently shooting 44 percent from the three  , 20-45.)

CAREER 3.3 rebounds per game, but for a ring could be better)

I am not trying to blow this team up but Steve Smith is the veteran backup small forward this team desperately needs, plus he only makes the veteran minimum. Can be had easily.

Pull the trigger Geoff, pull the trigger. :D

So who exactly would we trade to get him? I think the Bobcats like the vet leadership he and Brevin Knight bring to the team. I dont think he'll be had THAT easily. Maybe Maurice Evans and a 2nd rounder would do, but who knows.

I have to agree with "Tag" on this one. Who would we trade to get him?

I frankly get very nervous when people talk about pulling the trigger on a trade but don't mention which Kings would be leaving and WHY the opposing team would be willing to make the deal.

Geoff Petrie can do good things, but a lot of GMs in the NBA probably have his phone number blocked...

Well, Smith has very little value at this point, so if we wanted him we could no doubt get him fairly cheaply. Obviously the Bobcats can't have that much invested in a 36 yr old player who looked to be finished last year. Doubt they'd even have the audacity to ask for Darius or KMart. (nor do I think we'd give them).

So in other words based on the replies, Steve Smith has no value in the league? Because he makes the minumum I would think that a combination of Barnes, Evans, Daniels (two of the three, plus a second round pick would get it done). Of course I am not talking about the core eight. We are talking about the Bobcats here, not the Spurs or Wolves. They are trying to get going. They are not looking for a high priced veteran in return. They need players with valuable contracts that expire in one year.

Barnes, Evans and Daniels AND a second round pick? I refuse to buy into the idea that one aging veteran is worth giving up at least two players before they've even really had a chance to prove themselves. I couldn't care less about the second-round draft pick, but trading away Barnes and one of the other two just doesn't make good sense to me. I firmly believe Barnes has a future - he's young, he's got some habit to correct, etc. but he has potential. AND he's not 36.

Smith is sort of like the the 72 Spitfire in my drive way. Looks good, brings back great memories, can get you arround and even beat the ocasional new modle. But I really can't depend on it, hence the 95 Toyota parked next to it. The Triumph gets one heck of alot more attention than the toyota pick up does, espcialy on a sunny day, but it would be foolish to trae away youth and reliabltiy. Now I clearly am a guy who belives in having it all, just not paying too much for it. If Petrie can swing a deal for picks and say Evans and Daniels, then shure it's nice to have a choice on a sunny day.

Well put Celt ....

I miss my '74 MGB ... any Free Agent '74 MGB's out there ???

So if we somehow swing a deal for Smith we get an ageing shooter who doesn't play any D. For Evans or Daniels sure, but anything else no thanks.

Evans or Daniels and a second-round pick, yes. Barnes? Nope. But why would the Bobcats do this again?

I hear they may be willing to move him to a contender if he asks for it. The Kings might even be able tp full this off for next to nothing.

Sometimes you need to know when to hold them, when to fold them, and when to draw. I say we hold them and dumby-up for a while.

I prefer pinochle and bridge anyway..

Contracts and future value. Smith retires they hold nada. Evans and Daniels both have potential and can be bundled for future trades.... Sure it is a bad trade for THIS season but it's not like the Cats are going anywhere anyway. So this is exactly the kind of trade they might do.

I agree about Barnes. I would hate to give up on this guy he could really be a future bench standard and not just another Gerald Wallace. The only thing is, will he see enough consistent playing time to improve that greatly?

Where as Steve Smith could help this season, he knows what he can do. To think they would take Evans and Daniels is wishfull thinking, then again I read somewhere the Bobcats would ship him to a contender if he so desired.

Intriguing idea.

I'm in agreement with the poster who brings up Smith's lack of defense and athleticism. This team doesn't need another player that brings neither of those attributes to the table. I'd much prefer a guy who brings those two things first, offense second.

Question is whether we'd play a guy like that (defense/athleticism not much offense). Guess that would be the argument for Smith -- he LOOKS like a Kings player, so might at least be trusted enough to hit the floor. 30 of 31 teams would rather have Gerald Wallace any day of the week, but for us, Smith might actually be the more playable choice.
