This is an updated post since I had the wrong year. This is the projected cap space for the 24/25 season

The Spurs make some sense they will have plenty of room and if you are going to leave your best friend, playing with a potential generational talent and hall of fame coach makes sense. Suggs is all of a sudden the best defending guard in the league, do the Magic recruit Monk to play next to him for shooting? Jazz have a terrible back court and pairing the smaller George with a smaller Monk isn’t ideal for most teams. If the Spurs offer him 4 for 100 and a starting job that’s probably the biggest threat. The Raptors number will change drastically once they max either OG or Siakam.

I don't recall the Spurs ever being a player in the FA market. They usually go for vets on team friendly deals.

They also need to plan ahead for Victor's pay day.

They already extended Vassell

I had the wrong cap year which I’ve since updated. Still they have 35 mil to work with. I have no idea if they would be interested in monk and they do have Branham but he has been just ok so far.

I don't think the Magic are going to be in on a guard tbh. All their guard prospects that everyone left for dead are all of a sudden playing great. Cole looks good, Suggs looks amazing, they invested a high pick in Black and they still have Fultz, who was by far their best guard last year.

They have a bunch of guys coming up for extension too they have to be weary of too. I think the probably go for cheaper vet depth and save their cash to keep the core in place
 
Monk also strikes me as a loyalty guy too. He got left for nothing after his last year in CHA and then we signed him the first minute of FA after his year with the LAL. The Kings are the first spot to treat him as a core piece and where he gets to contribute, on a winner, with his best friend. I don't think the Spurs or Magic would drop 30 mil on him anyway, but I think we just need to make sure we don't lowball him with like a 4/50 type deal

I mean he's not leaving, no reason to even be concerned about that imo
 
I think if they low ball him he absolutely will leave. He might leave some on the table to stay here with his friend and a good team, but dude will want to be paid.

I hope you are right but if the Spurs or Magic offered him 4 for 100 he is leaving 20 mil on the table plus the different in state income tax.
Jamal had a good idea to offer him a 1&1 with the hope of being able to sign him to a lucrative deal after the 24/25 season when he declines the proposed player option. That’s a good option if he turns down our 4 year 78 mil we are capped at offering.

I don't think so either. I have worked with a best friend before that kept me working at a place I didn't even like just so I can hang out with him. It would have been easier to stay if I actually liked where I was.

Same here. I got a 20% pay raise (plus Christmas bonuses an order of magnitude larger) once we all left in different directions. I still miss working with my friends though, even though I like where I am now!
 
Here is what I will say, most humans will do what they feel is in their best interest even if it means leaving friends and family behind. If he likes his coach, his role, his lifestyle and his paycheck he will stay. If he thinks 2 or 3 of those things will be better elsewhere he will go. Let’s hope it works out because he fits what we do so well and is a blast to watch.

Yeah, one big factor is he hasn't made his "generational" wealth contract yet. Rookie deal, 5mil with LAL and then 20 mil here with us. And while he's still so young that he can get another big contract after this one, this will likely be his best opportunity to make money in his career for that huge generational wealth payday. I'll never fault guys like him who haven't made their bag yet to go get that opportunity and change their family tree forever.

I think the most likely scenario is we already have something worked out behind the scenes. Monte is too smart to just not have a plan for him heading into this off-season as a UFA.
 
I wonder if Tim bothered to look up 24/25 cap space. There will be plenty of teams that can offer more we just don’t know if they will. Having said that, all signs point to him loving Sac and that matters

You need to factor in those teams own free agents. The cap space assumes they dont resign any of their own.

I just don't think it's a huge concern. There's like 7 teams with cap space total and likely only 3 teams that would be interested in him anyway. AND that's assuming that Monk is at the top of all their lists lol.... which seems very very unlikely. AND it assumes these teams are going to drop a 30mil/season deal on him and make him the focal point of their offense...which as much as I love Monk and his game... seems unlikely.

Another thing to consider is Monk spent his first 5 seasons losing too. He and Fox broke the streak last year of most games played without a playoff appearance. He just doesn't strike me as a guy who would want to go to a rebuilding squad like Utah or SAS, despite some good pieces and potentially spend a few more years being at the bottom of the West. Not when he gets to be one of the most important players on a winning team now, heading into his prime, alongside his best friend.

Orlando would be the squad I'd be more worried about potentially since they're really starting to peak with good young talent. But even there... they have a ton of investment in Suggs/Anthony, they just spent a #6 pick on Black. Fultz is headed to UFA, but I imagine they'd prioritize bringing him back over paying Monk 30+mil? And they have to be cognizant of the Franz max extension that's coming and whatever Suggs ends up getting as a raise after next season.

I'm fairly confident the "handshake" deal is already in place. Just a matter if Monk wants the 4/78 or if he wants the 1+1 and we reup him after next season.

I'm tired of all these low quality tweets from babygiraffe who has no clue what he's talking about half the time. There are a solid number of teams who have significant cap space. Has he not learned anything from Mozgov? All it takes is 1 team to like Monk enough in order to offer him a big deal that we can't match.
 
One other way we could structure Monks contract is to offer him the 4 years 78 with a player option in the second year. He gets the security of a 4 year deal in case of injury with the option to terminate early if things go as expected allowing us to give him a bigger deal. CBA experts can chime in if this is not allowed with the new agreement but Bertans had a deal structured like this I do believe.

Orrrrrr we give him the supermax but deferred 95% of it to once he’s retired
 
Malik now leads the league in assists from the bench, with 102. He is third in three-pointers made, with 57, behind Bogdan Bogdanovic and Tim Hardaway, Jr.
 
@Capt. Factorial - I know we only have early bird rights for Malik because it was a 2 year deal. Had it been a 3 year, but the 3rd year a player option and he declined it, would we have full bird? If that is so, that seems like a big mistake on this front office.
