I don't think that's what they're there for, anyway. IIRC from when Evans was there, the "select team" is USMNT's equivalent of a practice squad.

That's exactly what they are, but it is a stepping stone to the Olympic team of the future if you can make a big enough impression. Willie is the type of player that brings a speciality that's coveted by the USA team. Just needs to polish up a few things. Then maybe in four years?
