If you’re talking about Bane, he’s way, way more proven than Kuminga. Plays both sides of the ball. Has carried Memphis when Morant has been out. AND, AND the Magic are poised to make a run at Eastern finals and Finals.
We aren’t anywhere near this.
Sure, but he’s not a “star” player and has never really been close to an all star game even with Morant out for extended periods of time and an open buffet. And we are talking about 4 unprotected here. Not one for a player who has never been seriously considered as even an injury replacement all star…and likely never will be. He’s a helluva player, but I would’ve been furious if the Kings gave 4 lottery protected first rounders for him. Let alone 4 unprotected
And Magic were poised to make a multi round run last season and they barely missed the lottery.
Even if they weren’t injury prone. They arent a team that you can confidently say will be churning out late first rounders for the next half decade. At least not me. That’s another thread but I have some problems with their roster and its balance.
Now to JK…nothing about the pursuit for Kuminga is about what he has proven. It’s all based on what the Kings think he will be.
The salary. Kuminga hasn’t proven to be a $20 million+ but he’s going to get it based on the strides he’s expected to make in the role the Kings envision for him. Even the Warriors are willing to give him that based on it being viewed good value even as they aren’t sure where he fits in their roster. Because that’s where his potential and projections are.
He wouldn’t be worth Monk or even a heavily protected first based on his body of work to this point. But that’s currently being rejected like it’s a given it would be rejected.
It’s up to the FO to decide if they project Kuminga to be a future number one, or number 2 option. And I mean soon of course. As well as a two way player. If they do then I think adding an unprotected first should be easy for them.
I think the hold up is they aren’t sure yet that they’ll have to give an unprotected first for him.
But going after Kuminga based on a vision is more of the speculative moves that the Kings haven’t been making for years that left them missing out on some really good players that could’ve been had.
I think Kuminga could(probably will) prove to be much more valuable than a player like Desmond Bane is the overall point. He isn’t even close to a finished product.
