No hate at all. I like the guy when he isn't covering the Kings, when he's rambling on about his playing days, etc. He just stinks as a broadcaster covering a specific team, as he knows nothing about the team and makes **** up.
Don't imply not liking Walton as a shining endorsement of Napear.

Walton knows more about basketball than this collective forum by a factor of 10. Sure, he engages in hyperbole for entertainment value. But don't for a second believe he doesn't know basketball because of his obviously outlandish comments, which only the non-initiated take seriously. My suspicion is that Walton has a low threshold for watching terrible basketball and the hyperbole is a defense mechanism so he won't go bonkers watching the horrid play.
What amuses me is how he influences Napier on his commentary, or Reynolds when he is involved in the announcing. All of a sudden, there is a truth serum administered to both of them; they become more critical of the team - deservingly so - and they start telling you more of what they really think, not the party line.

No, he says a lot of stupid **** that doesn't make any sense, no matter how many drugs you may have consumed at some point in your life.
His comments aren't just outlandish, they are factually incorrect and have no basis in reality. You couldn't take him seriously if you wanted to.
I will agree that at times he makes Napear, etc., discuss topics or address issues they normally wouldn't. And I applaud him for that. If he could stick to that and lay (laid?) off the drugs, he'd be a LOT better.
But I can't wade through all his **** just to get to the few gleaming nuggets.

His comments are outlandish and of course factually incorrect, but somehow they are mysteriously amusing to me. I have to admit that the dude makes me laugh in the same way that I laugh at a SNL parody.

It is unfortunate that some others can't see the humor. Your observation about his affect on the other announcers is very perceptive. Walton can't stand Mr. Gray because he doesn't know what he is talking about.

Oh, I find him amusing. I like the guy. I'd go listen to him give a motivational presentation. I'd love to sit down with him over dinner and let him ramble on the old days, or thoughts on life, or whatever.
I just can't handle him on a Kings broadcast because he is clueless on what is going on with the team. It's like listening to my 9-year-old son repeatedly tell me how some pro QB in the NFL today is the best ever and he's never watched Joe Montana play. I mean, OK, it's entertaining to listen to his reasoning the first time. But then he does the same thing over and over, is factually incorrect, and not based in reality. That gets OLD.
When I am listening to an adult who is supposed to know his facts and he continually screws crap up because he doesn't know what's going on, I can't take it. Drives me up the wall.

I always get a kick out of people who think this big insecure idiot with diarrhea of the mouth is some manipulative genius who's just toying with everyone around him. You see what you want to see. You can't make sense of all of his nonsense either, so you just make up the best story you can to explain it all. Hey, 40 years ago he used to be a smart player and played for a great college coach...so he CAN'T be this stupid now, right? MUST all be some gigantic decades old game he is running on the rest of the world.
Problem is, even if it were, it still makes him terrible. If Stephen Hawking suddenly decided it would be funny to start sprinkling in 2+2=5! 50x50=367.21! comments into his speeches he'd quickly become completely worthless and distracting to listen to too, no matter how much underlying knowledge he had.
Difference between Jerry Reynolds and Bill Walton is this. I have my differences with Jerry and his play dumb homerism. But if I was sitting at a bar watching the game and Jerry came in and sat next to me and started doing commentary it would mostly be ok. I would argue with him sometimes, in the "give me a break", "you have to be kidding", "you know that's not true, quit being such a damn homer" vein of arguing, but overall it would be ok. Bill Walton comes in and starts doing the same thing and its completely nonsensical drizzle while I am trying to watch the game. Might make one plea for him to chill, but my next one would probably just be "Bill, shut up I'm trying to watch the game", followed by "Shut up!!" folowed by Shut the **** UP!!" Followed by probably just popping him in the nose and kickinig his *** out of the bar.

Bill Walton =/= leader of men. His entire demeanor demands disrespect. They'd laugh at him.

Walton had the benefit of playing for John Wooden for 4 years and talked to him weekly for decades. Walton handily won national championships, and played in the NBA with the likes of Larry Bird.
You are confusing his affect and personality with his basketball knowledge and the level of respect it commands.
More people should take to heart Bill Walton's call for joy when playing the game and wondering where the joy has gone on the Kings' team.

I'm just saying he's a nice break from the usual criticism we get from our own announcers. The worst they say is "That was not a good shot" or "That was not a very good defensive sequence".
Walton comes in and while he doesn't know a whole lot about our team, he still has a good basketball eye and he can spot BS on the court when he sees it. He may over exaggerate things but he calls out individual players for lack of heart and hustle. He calls players out on bad defensive effort and rotations. He might not be 100% familiar with the individual games of our players, but he knows crap when he sees it and he's not afraid to say it.

Indeed, because we all know 40 yr old name dropping is the key to individual competence. Just look at Keith Smart (Bobby Knight, Popovich, Nellie). Woot!
I still think he is funny. Not a genius, sometimes a buffoon, but I believe that is his schtick. Not for everyone, for sure.
