Victor Claver won't enter to 2009 NBA Draft

G-League
Pamesa Valencia (his team) and Victor Claver will say tomorrow the renewal of Claver's contract. The Spanish player were a good option to pick #31...

Was this a quote from a Spanish paper? Seems a couple of dudes here thought he would have panned out. I was just about to check him out on youtube too.

He would have been one hell on a player I can tell you that much. Reminds me of a more athletic Rudy Fernadaz.

I'd like to see a link before I believe this, but I don't think Fernandez is really the comparison. I'd say more like a cross between Lamar Odom and Chris Anderson. He's a good finisher (especially on alleyoops) and really fluid for 6'10", but really raw.

He could afford to add about 25 pounds of muscle also. Right now, I'm intrigued with your comparison. I'm trying to visualize that player, but something from a horror movie keeps leaping into my mind.:D

Looks like it's a 3 year contract, and will be announced tomorrow.

Fernandez isn't the comparison, but neither Odom and absolutely no way Chris Andersen. He played at SF this season, and his coach has said he'll play SF again this season with some minutes at PF.

I can't find a comparison... Let's say Jamison or Rashard Lewis, at least his offensive game has some similarities.

Yeah, intereting prospect -- 6'10" guy who both plays above the rim and has 3pt range. Also weighs about 43 lbs and Angela Tsai could kick his *** with one arm tied behind her back, but it doesn't seem Eurobasket has grasped the concept of weight training yet amongst its younger players, so hopefully that would improve over here. Only decent mix I could find of him:

The article says he'll probably declare in this draft, and he wants to be selected in the 2nd round for sign a good contract in 3 years.

He is "raw" but not "very raw". It was clearly his best season, but he has an injury of 4 months in the middle of the season.

Inconsistent. Some great games with others where he was missing.

He'll probably be with the National team this summer.

I think it's an interesting prospect with #31. If he is selected with a low 1st, there's a risk he never goes to the NBA.

Yeah he's a very intriguing guy--if I recall he was also another classic case of that tall athletic Euro player who can shoot who was hyped to the heavens back when he was a real youngster. But now that things have simmered down and he's more mature, I think this is where his real draft stock lies--somewhere between the late 1st and early 2nd. I think he has even greater value because like most Euros he's a prospect that can be stashed and groomed overseas until he's fully ready, but I suspect he wants to be drafted in the 2nd round so he doesn't have to pay his way directly to the NBA. Either way, had he stayed in the draft, he would've been drafted between rounds, but now that he's out, a guy to look out for in the future.

He's a guy who on top of the athleticism and shooting ability has been fairly productive in a good league in Europe--his athletic markers are fairly prominent in his stats as well, putting up good rebounding and steals per 48 marks which should translate decently to the NBA. He shows major promise in his offensive efficiency as well--it appears that he can either slash/get to the line and hit three pointers well, taking nearly half his shots as three pointers but still getting to the line on nearly half of his attempts as well. Seems to be a classic low usage, high efficiency player--his usage rate is lower than most of the guys on his team, but he has a higher PER than the majority, and he's younger than most of them, so that really bodes well for him.

The only complaints might be about his inability his pass the ball and perhaps his penchance to rely too heavily on his outside shot in terms of skills, and in particular some seem to question his mental/physical toughness which may be why his stock has dropped from lottery status (as it had for previous Euro wunderkinds like Maciej Lampe, Podkolzine, Andriuskevicius and others). If that's the case, combined with his lack of weight (he's only at 220 lbs) that might affect his consistency and assertiveness in a real way, and his ability to finish and get to the line (as he had shown in Europe) would be lowered several notches. So of course not sure what you're going to get with him with the past track records of European bigs, but he's legitimately producing in key areas and has good athletic statistical markers that should translate to the league, so he could definitely find a niche as a low-usage high-efficiency spot up shooter who can rebound and steal somewhat if he focuses in those areas. He's not entering now, but could be a useful guy for the future.

Great scout about Claver.
I'm agree with your opinion about his ability to pass the ball. He needs to know how can play more for his team.
I think that the most correct comparation is with other Spanish player: Jorge Garbajosa. Victor is more athletic than Garbajosa.

I agree that Odom/Chris Anderson aren't perfect comps, but I don't think Jamison or Lewis are right either.

Basically, he's a super-athletic 6'10" small forward who can shoot from outside and can finish inside, but who struggles with his handle and passing. I guess I can see the Lewis comparison, but I see Lewis as much more of a perimeter player, whereas Claver gets out on the break and can throw down.

In other words, he's fluid athletically like Odom (but isn't the ballhandler or passer), he can jump/dunk and is skinny like Chris Anderson (but isn't the dirty work kind of guy), game somewhat similar to Lewis in that he can either shoot from inside or finish inside (but more athletic than Lewis yet not as good of a shooter).

Nothing close to a finished product, but some intriguing size, athleticism, and nascent skills.

Nowitzki in the early part of his career?
