Tyreke's Shot - Improved Form

Dime Dropper

All-Star
Here is a video of Tyreke working out. Clearly he has restructured his shot somewhat. The fading away is gone, his body is straighter and his form looks much better as a result. Now this obviously isn't in game so I'd expect some relapses during actual games but it's encouraging to see that he's working on fixing the major problems in his shot.

Surprising last year how many missed lay-ups he had; especially with contact; something he was extremely good at year one.

Hope that improves.

We've seen him hit jumper after jumper in practice before but until we see in game stuff i won't be counting any chickens.

I'm pretty sure last year it was the same thing. The shot looked better when he was working on it but then in games he would revert back to his old ways. Part of the problem is that in games there are actually players defending him! He tends to dribble too much in one spot before he gets his jumper off and then do his fade thing so that he can shoot over players.

Using his legs

Tyreke is clearly using his legs more which is great. IMHO part of his shooting woes is related to fatigue, since he tends to use his arms more when tired, which doesn't help since he also starts fading away. If his minutes are closely monitored and Tyreke is in better shape to begin with, I have reason to believe his outside efficiency will improve.

Looks a little shorter/quicker too, which may be helping him. Looks almost like he is getting it off half a second early just as he used to get into that lean. Definitely an improvement standstill. Can he use that form off the dribble though? Not that I am eager to see him taking a bunch of jumpers off the dribble.

I think the major problem he has always had is that flinging catapult action. I don't know how you consistently direct a shot like that, that's why I've never felt confident that his shot will turn out that well. You have to completely break down your mechanics and start from scratch to fix that, that's obviously not going to happen at this point in his career.

He still pulls the ball back too far, but I really don't care about form as long as it goes in. If he practices the same form consistently he will get better. If he's always trying to change it, he'll never get consistant with it.

he was clearly never 100% last year. They'll go in more this year.

Ditto!!!! Repetition = muscle memory, and muscle memory = consistency. As Ken Venturi, the once great golfer said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get". No, his fourm isn't perfect, but its a damm site better than a lot of other NBA players that became good shooters. I don't know if Tyreke will ever be a good shooter off the dribble, but all he needs to do, is be able to hit that 3 pointer when left open. If he can make them guard him on the perimiter, then his inside game opens up.

Anybody ever see Jamal Wilkes shoot the ball? He brought the ball much futher back above his head than Tyreke does, and no one ever criticized his shot. Because he made them!!!

In fact the Kings have a long and storied tradition of weird shots. We had Admas in camp way back in the 80s. Peja had a messed up rotation, Kevin was always bringing the ball up his side little kid style. But they all could light it up.

Marion of course turned himself into a respectable outside shooter with pure uglines. Marcus Camby is a pretty good outside shooter for a big with an overhead sling of his own. Reke looks like he's shortened that up thoguh, so hopefully it won't be that pronounced anymore. As strong as he is there is no way he needs all that arm and shoulder motion.

Yeah, Shawn Marion automaticly springs to mind. And as you mentioned, Kevin Martin, who has a big hitch in his shot. As I pointed out, Jamal Wilkes, who was a very good shooter, had less than stellar form. There was another Warrior player who's name excapes me who shot the ball from almost behind his head with a huge arc on the ball, but was a very good shooter. I'm certainlly not going to go list a hundred players. The point is, you can have bad form and still be a good shooter. But it requires a lot more work. In an ideal world everyone would have form like Jimmer. But thats not going to happen. The bottom line is that Tyreke has made some improvements and I'm sure he'll continue to improve over the years. Its not worth arguing about unless you just want to argue about something.

Purvis Short? Had the huge exaggerated drawing rain arc on his shot, just don't remember the shooting form.

Clyde Drexler had an ugly shot, but made it much of the time. Tracy McGrady's shot wasn't pretty either, but he got fairly consistent with it as well.

Martin doesnt really have a hitch. He just brings the ball up from the hip. His form is good from the triple threat spot forward.

Marion shoots like a 12yo girl. It's like he's passing it into the basket.

Tyreke's form is so bad, I'm surprised he hasn't started from scratch. At this point, he should probably stick with it. Unfortunately, all that movement means it will be slow and less accurate than a better form.

Peja and Kevin had ugly shots, but they were quick and used the wrist.

Not all ugly shots are created equal. Are there good shooters whose releases were/are just as bad as Evans' catapult shot? He slings it upward from his fingertips behind his head, I think it's very unlikely a shot like that can ever be consistent, it lacks too much coordination with the rest of his body. He's all forearm and fingertips.
