Too nutty to sustain was my opinion. After you realize he's crazy, who follows?
But Artest's intial impact that first half season when he was here (the Artest and Bonzi show) actually resulted in the best defensive performance we have put forth in the past 8 years, even with defensive stalwarts like Brad Miller, Mike Bibby, Kevin Martin etc. getting large chunks of minutes.
Besides it also follows in my general theory that Kevin's anti-defense aura is so strong it can overcome anything and anyone.

It overcame Artest, then upon Kevin's being traded to Houston the Rockets instantly went from one of the league's better defensive teams every year to one of its worst. This despite the presence of Hayes and Battier. Just as your stars playing defnse means everybody starts too, your stars not playing defense means nobody feels they have to.
