That'll come down to earth a bit after the hype dies down, but I'm more concerned with the fanboy 9.5 for MST. ;)

You can't really pick and choose here when you are going with IMDb scores. Almost every movie on there suffers the fanboy effect. That's why I think the aggregate scores of every single notable critic in the world is much more valuable than the averages of all the Joe and Jane movie experts in America. Do you see some of the movies we let become blockbusters every summer? (*cough*Spider-man 3*cough*)

edit: and I'm with you Lowen. I'd rather you lose to the champion than to the runner-up (sorry Jerryaki). I really thought your list was unbeatable.

Do you see me quoting box office numbers?? You continue to conflate two separate concepts -- imdb ratings, and box office numbers. The one is an indication to some degree of whether people, not 300 non-representative elite largely snobbish weenie critics, but actual people, liked what they saw. The other is an indication of how many were tricked into going to see it, enjoyment or no.

And one more time, as last I checked these lists were not being voted upon by movie critics (thank god), the appropriate indicator of their popularity amongst the voters, i.e. the general public, is the ratings of the general public.

As for the 9.5, that was clearly a massive aberration. It would have made MST3000 the highest rated movie of all time. No fanboy effect is that severe on imdb. Spider Man 3 is bolstered by fanboys and still only at a 6.5. Fortunately I solved the mystery -- Lowen mistakeningly included the ranking for the MST3000 TV series (9.5) ratehr than the MST3000 movie (7.2). The 7.2 is much more in line with what I would have expected, adn the 9.5 is not uncommon for TV series on imdb because very few people rate them, and the only ones who do are fans.

Shucks, my mistake. I thought that seemed rather high, but figured that was because only the uber-fans bothered to watch/vote for it. Thanks for correcting me.

I suppose that plummets my overall IMDb score closer to 160 ;)

By the way Brick, you really should be winning this round by a landslide. Time to open up the wallet again?

Vote for Brick!

I had to go with Jerryaki.....You both have probably an equally good lineup of great movies, but Jerryaki has fewer movies on his list that I consider to be mediocre.....

that's always nice to hear.

I do love The Princess Bride.

In any event, you can rub it in my face when you have a pretty trophy above your icon ... as is seemingly inevitable at this point.

Are you starting your Super Bowl shuffle now and practicing your Disneyland Commercial speach?

I continue to conflate imdb ratings and box office numbers? I'm sorry but when have I ever even mentioned one or the other, let alone both in the same sentence other than in the post before? Are you confusing me with someone?

As it were, I'll admit Rotten Tomatoes is a poor source for ratings when it comes to older movies as they very frequently have so few reviews of classics to make the review pool accurate. In that same turn, IMDb is terrible for recent movies because of ongoing fanboy (and the opposite) effects. For a while, The Dark Knight was the #1 movie of all time, and the #1 worst movie of all time. I don't know how they did it but they did, look it up.

In the interest of not continuing the IMDb vs. RT debate, I'll just say this. Barring word-of-mouth, when deciding whether to pick up a certain movie from rental or which of star-studded 2 comedies to see at the movies, I really think Rotten Tomatoes is the way to go. You don't have to read any of the reviews, the power of all the critics as a whole is what does it. That is all.

Boo!

And to all of you who voted Jerryaki, let the images of what you have done haunt you until your grave:

Yes, congrats! Even though I voted for "the other guy", you had a strong lineup. Well played!

Alright, I voted for Jeryaki.

And you know what Brick, it largely did come down to Titanic and Pride and Prejudice. And ultimately I decided that if you skip ahead and only watch the ship sink... I'd much rather watch Titanic.

Dead Poets Society DVD

I'll be set.

Alright, congratulations to Jerryaki. I am not in control of the trophy giving, but I can only assume you will get one of your own, and rightfully so.

It was very fun doing this and I am happy it was ultimately a big success. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Draft over.
