We have acquired Kelly Miller from the Indiana Fever in exchange for Anna DeForge.
We are really excited to add a player like Kelly Miller to the Mercury roster. Miller was the #2 overall pick in the 2001 draft and has enjoyed a successful pro career and received the WNBA’s Most Improved Player award in 2004. She has started all 68 games she had played with the Fever over the last two years averaging 10.2 points per game while shooting 37% from three-point range. Kelly is 27 years old.
She is a very athletic guard and can play both the point guard and shooting guard positions. We are excited about Kelly for a lot of reasons, but the main one is that we feel she will be great fit for Coach Westhead’s style of play. Kelly has played a lot of point guard in her basketball career and is an excellent ball handler with excellent speed. She should fit perfectly into an up tempo style of play.
We feel we have added depth to our team at the point guard position, which is a critical position for the style we will be playing.
As for Anna, she has been a part of the organization for the past three seasons and has been as professional and upstanding as you could hope any player would be. She has worked hard each day in practice and has embraced her role as professional athlete in the community. The fact that she has shown such perseverance in making herself a top level athlete is a credit to her character. She has hit a bunch of big shots for the Mercury and we wish her great success in all that she does.
The difficult part of the deal is having to part ways with Anna. It is never easy when high quality people move on from any sports team. But it is a part of our business. Anna earned the right to be a restricted free agent this year and was able to pursue offers from other teams. In the end, it should be a good situation for her, for the Fever and for the Mercury.
