Tony Parker for 7th

The Spurs have talked to teams in the lottery, including the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings, who hold the fifth and seventh picks, respectively. The Kings are determined to get a frontline point guard, and have also talked with the Denver Nuggets about Raymond Felton(notes).

Parker is under contract for 3-4 more years ($12.5M each year, fourth year only $3.5M guaranteed if cut before the season). Assuming we would keep him for the fourth year, that's $50M total for the age 29-32 seasons. A bit tough to swallow, but then again, Parker could be our instant ticket to the playoffs.

Instead of a straight-up deal, imagine something built around this:
Beno + #7
for
Parker + #29

We'd still have enough money to go after a free agent SF, and we could draft a guy like Malcolm Lee at #29:

Parker/Evans/Thornton/Lee
FA/Casspi/Greene/Garcia
Cousins/Dalembert?/Thompson/Whiteside

Not looking too shabby - we'd be ready to compete now, and still have some trade pieces like Casspi/Greene if we need to use them.

Cautiously, I would be interested.

I'm not mad on this idea. In fact, I really believe we'd be best served just making our pick. Although, you can see the logic in getting a proven player. I don't think he really fits though, especially not unless Beno is traded somewhere.

To make this pairing work, Tyreke is going to have to get much better off the ball. For that matter, for the Kings to succeed, Tyreke is going to have to pay much better off the ball in every scenario.

Should note btw this is the same writer who came up with the Felton rumor, so...maybe. Or maybe one of those agenda things. And oh boy can Woj have an agenda when he wants to.

Yup, this is the kind of move I can start to get behind. While he is getting paid quite a bit .. How often does a team get to add a proven all star and more importantly, a multiple time NBA champion who is still young enough (29) to play big minutes? Talk about adding a veteran to the team ...

And to those who say he cant shoot .. you are kind of right, but I do think he is a decent shooter... better than he gets credit for. Beno Udrih shot .357 from three last season .. Tony Parker shot that exact same percentage. His shot is good enough, Not Ideal, but doable.

And the reason why I can accept the fact that he isnt a great shooter is because he can do other things that guys like Felton ( who also cant shoot ) cant do. His speed is his biggest asset, and boy could this team use some speed. Our offense would look much smoother with him out there .. It kills me every time Tyreke brings the ball up the court .. by the time we get into our offense we have about 16 seconds on the clock. Parker would change all of that.

I'd still rather go after Iggy or Granger because they fill a bigger need, but Parker would be a GOOD pickup for us. Easily the best PG this team could afford this offseason. I almost cant quite process it yet, but I am very intrigued.

Here's the thing -- he is 16ppg here -- TOPS, unless we squelch the kids for him -- and was not the straw that stirred in San Antonio on either end of the court (Manu on one end, Duncan on the other). Guys who need shots to be effective, no matter what position they play, are just inherently going to cause issues for us now. There is a thought here. But if in 2 years Reke, Thornton and Cousins are all 20ppg guys, then Parker has no room to be Tony Parker, but he's still costing you like Tony Parker, and you likely had to lose a guy who could step back and just be a roleplayer in Beno in order to bring Parker into town.

The idea of bringing in a big name impact vet next year is great. But when you are talking about brining in said vet to a backcourt that already si going to struggle to find enough shots to go around, and said vet would seem to be particularly ill suited to play alongside your best player having the same general game (to the rim, not a great shooter), and needing the ball...

parker is good but not for this team. he's already 29. not much of a window to work with our young core. we just need to surround with good role players.

Honestly, I think I'd rather have Felton. He's a better defender and has better assist numbers than Parker. I think he'd fit in better on the Kings than Parker would. Plus he's three years younger and considerably cheaper.

Its a tough one for sure. I do like the fact that he has 3 more guarenteed years .. so he will be up at the same time as Demarcus. Shots could absolutely be a problem though .. he took 13.7 Shots Per Game last year .. one more than Cousins, and fewer than Thornton and Evans. While shots may be a problem, I dont think thats terrible either. I mean, Marcus Thornton took 17.5 shots a game last year which may be too much. Beno took around 10 .. Like I said before, I think its doable.

I also just feel like the price is pretty low. #7 in a pretty weak draft for a 29 year old all star .. I dont know. It would be hard for me to pass this trade up at that price. Beno would probly have to be moved, which is a shame because I really like him.

I think he would help out Demarcus alot. Working with Duncan his entire career, he obviously knows how to get the ball into the post ( something we are remarkably bad at ) and maybe he'll force Cousins to post up more often .. I saw way to much of Cousins on the perimeter during the second half of last season. I want him going to work in the post as much as possible.

I also think the addition of Parker would dramatically increase our chances of keeping Dalembert. If Dally has reservations about signing with us because he wants to play for a winner .. well, if we show him we are willing to make this kind of move, AND we can probly pay him the most money, you have to think he would go for that.

He would create some kind of unrest between the guards, no doubt about it. It could be worth it though. I think he would make the team better in a lot of ways. He'd be better for the bigs, he'd be better for image of the team (That we are serious, we are ready to make a playoff push).

Do the pro's outway the con's? I'm not sure yet. I keep coming back to that draft pick though .. Its not like we are giving up a lot.

The thing I don't get is why the Spurs would want to trade Parker. He's the youngest of their big 3 and the guy I'd think they'd want to rebuild around once Duncan retires. Why give up a proven all star for a 7th pick in a weak draft?

veterans we pick up by free agency... 7th is too valuable for the likes of parker

age 29 how long can he keep playing his fast paced game? also can't shoot.. i also question his toughness and durability. never been a fan of parker. maybe a few years back but not when he is going to hit the last leg of his glory days.

People are acting like 29 is 40. Look at Jason Kidd and Steve Nash. Point Guards play past 35 all the time. Parker probably has a minimum of five years of high level basketball left.

Not to mention Parker's already had a ton of mileage--he came into the league super young, was thrown straight into the fire and has played many 30 mpg seasons since, and has played tons of playoff games. Spurs know what they're doing--a player approaching 30, with that much mileage and one who relies on that speed to get to the basket and lacks a good long range jumper, is one that definitely won't age well. Parker played surprisingly well this year after a down year before but I don't think he'll see much better days from this point forward.

Only one with real value given his age, and they have an adequate replacement on hand in Hill.

Looking at Kidd's impact at age 38 on the Mavs championship, I think Tony Parker being the proven veteran and still 29 could still take the Kings multiple playoff appearance the way guys like Fisher and Billups have proven.

Felton is still nowhere near Parker's shadow, IMO. Parker's been there and done that. This is the kind of vet that this team needs.

The Spurs probably want Leonard since they badly missed a Bruce Bowen type of defender. Or maybe Fredette to help them spread the floor for their low post bigs. I'll give them #7 and Beno for their first round pick and Parker. Guys like Bertans, Mirotic, and Parson who are shooting SF are good choices at #29.

mavs succeeded because they had the following

A speedy point guard that passed and can shoot wrecking the miami D by as they collapsed on him (barea)
SHOOTERS legit shooters... stevenson, terry, and of course the dominating bigman Dirk nowitzki... i doubt parker can play at kidds level when he hits 30 plus he also isnt a good defender like kidd.

I didn't say he was in their league. What league they're in isn't the point. The point is that point guards routinely play into their mid 30s. Any way you look at it Parker should have four or five good years left in him.

He doesn't have to be the Tony Parker of 2006 to help the Kings. He just has to bring some experience, poise, and talent to the team. He's a good enough shooter to spread the defense. He's not like Rondo where people will leave him wide open because they know he can't or won't shoot. The more I think about it, I think it would be a great move. I'm just not going to get my hopes up because it's probably not going to happen.

For all those who want us to bring in Tony Parker, what do you expect Tyreke to do on the court? Spot up at the three point line? Come off of picks and shoot fade away jumpers? Have we seen him do anything on a basketball court which makes that look like a potentially good pairing?

Can we please not compare any team to this years Mavs, or try and replicate what they did .. That team was so wierd, such an anomaly. Trying to build a team like that with the roster we already have is foolish. They went absolutely nuts from 3 .. even for good three point shooters, they just hit everything. That wont happen again. When Deshawn Stevenson is hitting threes the way he did during the playoffs, you know you are witnessing something wacky.

Parker is a better player then Kidd right now. Was Kidd a better player over the course of his career? sure. Is he a better shooter right now? yup. But he isnt a better player. We dont need Tony Parker to play till he's 38. We just need 3 good years from him ( the remainder of his contract ) and if he is still good by then .. well, we will see when it happens.

At $13mil per he has to do more than just bring poise. That's a backbreaking contract. Something you only pay truly elite players. Even in 2006 he wasn't worth that much. At 16ppg its nearly a million a point.
