Tiny backcourt

Throughout the preseason I called for a Fox/Yogi look. As big of a Buddy fan as I am, and someone who has called for him to start, maybe he is more comfortable off the bench. If that’s true maybe we will see more “tiny backcourt”

Last night we got a look, but with Mason instead of Yogi. This gives the playmaking a huge boost and attacking in transition.

Can Fox/Mason fare acceptably on defense? I’m guessing Fox would defend the length and Mason defend the stronger PGs? Can this style be a mainstay if Bogey plays SF?

It all depends on the matchup. If Fox is matched up against a guy who can play physical in the post and get in him in foul trouble, it's a no-go. If, on the other hand, the guy Fox is matched up against is more of an outside/slasher type then it could work.

Mason is a bull, though, and may be able to body the physical players. Are there many SGs with length and who pound it?

I really don't know. My total guess is that a third of the NBA SGs have a good low post game if they have a smaller, lighter player on them.

I'm not a fan of the Fox/Mason combo.

But pairing a small guard who is a good shooter or volume scorer with Fox could probably work.

Defensively though I think Fox could guard many of the SG out there decently, so you wouldn't be in trouble with both he and Mason on the floor together at the same time.

It could work. Portland has a 6 foot Damian Lillard with a 6’3” CJ McCollum in their back court.

You could interchange Mason and Yogi, but Yogi would probably be better at running the point in the 2nd unit than Mason.

Mason is a bulldog and would be best in a situation where he is not the primary ball handler.

I can see Joeger going with this “mini backcourt” until Bogdan comes back. Buddy may be used a 6th man again.

I don't think it'll be successful at all. Once the season starts, opposing SGs will light up Frank and Yogi just by shooting over them. From everything we've heard and seen from our eyes, both of them are closer to IT height than 6'0... I think Fox would struggle with the physicality, so it's not a good matchup for him either. However, I think we'll just be getting a band-aid fix with this tiny back court until Bogdan comes back.

I think the coaching staff deserves some blame for Buddy's woes as a starter. In the starting unit, Buddy is forced to play off-ball, but Joerger doesn't design many catch and shoot plays for him. Buddy hardly gets any play designs that free him up as a shooter. We'll also randomly dump him the ball and tell him "do something with it". If he misses consecutively, Joerger will turn elsewhere. Buddy is a naturally streaky player. I think it has something to do with his slower release...he can go 1-4 to end the 1st quarter, but start off the 2nd quarter 3-3. Consistency on offense is his biggest problem. I do think that coming off the bench would yield the best result though.

Hield is a 6th man type....not meant to be an insult at all. He’s really good off the bench, has been ok at best when starting......and I don’t blame the coaching staff for this at all. The small backcourt gives them the extra ball handler until Bogi comes back and that is huge. The trade off is on the defensive end. Add in a Bjelica to that unit and there is some spacing which is nice.

I’ve wanted the Yogi and Hield backcourt off the bench since we acquired Yogi. That is a really solid backcourt going against second units, giving us an advantage most nights.

I dont think getting posted up by a bigger sg is the issue. Its more on slashes, lobs, dribble penetration where the smaller guy would get exposed. Probably the biggest problem would be we now have another weak link on switches

I mean if Joerger feels he needs to play one of Mason or Yogi with Fox for extra ball handling, then so be it. It's not as if the Kings are playing much defense or winning many games, might as well experiment and see what you have in these players with a number of players needing minutes to showcase themselves.

I think that is the reality of what will happen with us.

Fox and Bog to start. Hield and Yogi off the bench. Solid, Solid backcourt both first and second unit with no let up in quality.

Still a gap at SF but our bigs will rotate and take some minutes and Bog will slide over a times along with Shump

I think you're vastly overestimating Shump's value/standing with the Kings.

JJ can barely play one position, let alone all 5.
