Hall of Famer
Thronton is a guy a lot like Reke in that he can create his own offense. Those guys don't really need a Beno to help them much. Whether the other guys do or not is the question, and the answere to that one likely lies in DeMarcus. If he becomes the second hub of the offense, then you don't necessarily need Beno there to serve that same role. When Kobe and Shaq were together, the leading assist guy otehr than them was probably at about 3apg, but the offense hummed becaise they had two guys drawing doubles and a sytem designed o et the others open.
Ironically I am not sure if Thronton and Reke work together as starters precisely because of Thornton's 1 on 1 tendencies. All depends if he's also comfortable as a catch and shoot/catch and drive guy. But he is a guy with the skillset to not be overly dependent on other people to spoon feed him opportunities.
I too am curious how Thornton and Evans will mesh on the floor at the same time. It will be interesting to find out. Being able to create your own shot, and also be effective, is what seperates the really good scorers from the average one's. They need nothing but the ball. Kevin Martin, as good a scorer as he was, he was at his best coming off of screens, spotting up, or scoring off backdoor plays. His weakness was creating, one on one off the dribble. His main move was to pumpfake his defender in the air and then jump into him trying to draw a foul. Martin wasn't a good enough ballhandler to be a great one on one creator.
So It'll be interesting to see how they use Thornton. He's not a great athlete. He's more quick than fast. But he handles the ball well, and he's very crafty with it. The Kings may have hit solid gold with him. Both Thornton and Taylor seem to be very good finishers around the basket. If it were up to me, I'd sit Tyreke for the rest of the year and see what these two guys can do..
