Giants reach agreement with Mark DeRosa .... Expected and questionable move by the managers.

Mark is an Ok player ... Ok offense .. Ok defense ... see fastballs well .. can play any IF position .. has been struggling with injures.

2 year contract is short and if this guy is healthy he can actually help us. The only thing I do not get - is DeRosa so much better than Garko who is much cheaper and younger? I guess there were some cockroaches between him and Bochy.

I was just talking to someone yesterday asking, "when are the Giants going to make a move?" We decided that when they do, it would be for a mediocre, veteran roleplayer.

blah blah. blah blah.

This FO is foolish. What does DeRosa bring that we DON'T already have? He's not the 25 HR/cleanup guy we need.

As far as the cockroaches... Garko sucked. And again, FO to blame for that one.

Yes, he sucked. So did DeRosa in STL :). We should have been given Garko another chance in spring. Again, he was cheap and he is not that SF bad.

DeRosa brings versatility. Basically he can play at any position. And he is a decent hitter a-la his former teammate Garko and also with no speed. Will he be able to hit at our ballpark? I think 18HR and 70-75 RBIs is his very max. Obviously, he will not solve our main problems, just adds some versatility and defense.

Are we still trying to bring Uggla? I was not 100% sure about him; now I think we should (if not must) get this guy.

I understand that our GM cannot make serious moves because of Tim's arbitration. We have limited resources and look like the Royals with our cheap owners. Bochy and Sab is a weak link in our system but the biggest problem is our "respected" and greedy owners.

For the most part I agree.:( DeRosa's not a bad player but he's not really good and he's not nearly enough to help our offense. We should be taking advantage of the dodgers getting worse with the McCourt's divorce and the Rockies losing some pitching(Marquis signed with the Nats) and try to gain some ground in this division. We have the pitching to win with Tim, Cain, Zito, MadBum, and Sanchez. We need to get a real impact guy to hit behind Pablo. Instead we're messing around with guys like DeRosa when we should be spending this money on legit players. To make a difference we'd need 3 or 4 DeRosas vs 1 Holliday or Bay+resigning Uribe. I mean yeah technically DeRosa is a "professional hitter" but he's not an impact guy, and we need an impact guy as long as guys like Rowand and Renteria are playing for us because they provide none.

I think Renteria will be better in 2010. He was injured last year and according to our GM it was the main reason why he was so horrible. He did not say it this way, he said that he was not so effective. A-ha ...
Obviously, it was a horrific season for him and I am not gonna lie that I hate this small guy now. However, I want to believe that he will be better; by that I mean that I hope he will be just bad. It seems like he is an exhaust material :(.

I hope Rowand will rediscover his above average hitting touch with a new hitting coach.

Nice guy to have around. Will play 3rd. Can play many positions. Hits in the clutch.
Still need Bay or even Guerrero to play left, with some pop.

Now we know that Uribe was brought back on 1 year, 3.25M deal ... I think the deal is not cheap but pretty fair taking into consideration that he can play 3 IF positions.

As I understand, The Giants managers wanna sign either LF (Damon, not crazy about him) or 1B (LaRoache).

Giants agree to terms on one-year deal with Aubrey Huff, 1B

Good:
Reliable hitter with decent power throughout his career
Punishes fastball pitchers
Fairly cheap 1 year contract

Bad:
Jumped the shark last year
Very bad defender at 1B. I mean real bad - no range, no mobility, bad glove, bad footwork.

Important news:

Giants re-sign Bengie Molina to a one-year $4.5M deal.

I think it is a decent move. Only one year, less than 5M - good numbers. Posey is not ready for 500 ABs.

Surprised but happy Benji is back. Buster needs a year to learn the ropes.

I think Benji should be dropped lower in the order so the bases won't be clogged

up so much. He should hit 6,7 or 8.

I guess Im glad Molina's back, but only if he's down in the lineup and not clogging the basepaths as our 3/4/5 guy...

Due to the fact that Lincecum has been in MLB three years, he is under control of the Giants - he cannot become a free agent until he has served 6 years. However, the size of his contract for next year - technically the next three years - is yet to be determined.

Before a player becomes arbitration eligible, the team is allowed to set his salary (within MLB constraints). Usually this is cheap. Once a player becomes arbitration eligible after his second or third season, he begins to have a say in his salary. Usually, these contracts are negotiated on a year-by-year basis. If the player and the team do not agree to a contract by a certain deadline, each must submit their desired salary for a one-year contract to an arbitrator. The arbitration hearing does not happen for another month or so, so the parties still have time to negotiate a non-arbitrated contract.

One of three things will happen:
1) Lincecum and the Giants will agree on a one-year deal, and the entire process will be repeated next year.
2) Lincecum and the Giants will agree on a multi-year deal, and the entire process will NOT be repeated (unless the deal ends before arbitration eligibility ends...)
3) Lincecum and the Giants will go to binding arbitration. In binding arbitration, Lincecum will argue why he is worth $13M for next season, and the Giants will argue why he is worth $8M (the numbers submitted). The arbitrator will choose one of the two numbers (may not choose an intermediate value) and that number will be binding, for a one-year contract. And the entire process will be repeated next year.

Any way you look at it, Lincecum will be making a boatload of money next year.

i know you guys are disappointed with your FO not getting a big bat in the middle of the lineup but at least the giants are making moves. my team (the marlins) are the only team in the major leagues that have not signed a player to a major league contract this offseason. i like the giants chances this year if huff can return to his '08 form because he could bring some thump in the lineup behind sandoval.
