The PG Thread

Fox, Mason and add in I. Cousins and we have three young PG's that can learn together. I think Mason can run this team and be surprisingly good at it. I go back and forth about a veteran PG from these kids to learn from but would not be opposed to having Ty here on a two year deal. Front loaded this year
 
I wonder how much of an advantage it is having a Vet pg mentor versus having a vet mentor on the coaching staff? I like the shelvin Mack suggestion the best if we go vet pg....maybe Vivek could be unconventional and pay him a huge assistant coach wage equal to what he could get as a player. Young enough to still get after it in practice and his whole roll is mentoring but doeant take any minuets. Then let the kids fight it out amoungst themselves with Fox Mason and I. Cousins the pgs.
 
I wish Lawson was a stable good mentor type, because his style of play is great. That said, do I want Lawson back on what would be only limited minutes with his potential to hurtle be a negative influence on a very young locker room? Probably not

I certainly don't want Collison back. I don't think he really fits either as he'd be taking a major back seat.

A steady crafty old vet who can mentor and pass knowledge to the youngsters. I like the idea of Udrih a lot.

It happens. Don't know if it will in this case, but why not try to sign him again, with a clear understanding of his role? In some ways I'd prefer to sign Lawson. But the truth is, Collison is a better shooter and that will help the Kings while we're waiting for Fox to become a decent shooter (who doesn't handicap his team).
 
I say let Fox take the reigns from day 1. If they want to bring him along slowly though, Id vouch for Jeff Teague.

Shelvin Mack and Teodosic make plenty of sense. They'd compliment Fox/Mason well.

Even though the backups would be very undersized, I still think Patty Mills could work too.

Why on earth would we sign anyone who takes valuable playing time away from Fox and Mason? Especially when we are better off getting a good draft pick next year?

I don't subscribe to wasting $$ for a tank, seems like counting eggs before they hatch... There will be good players on the board wherever the pick lands.

The space should be spent on players who can outperform the contract, thats the idea, If the Price/years are right with a player like Jeff Teague, I say pull the trigger. He can play next to Fox if needed, Fox isn't as needy of the ball or as stubborn as Schroder.

Well thats just short sighted stupidity.

Having players that outperform contracts is great if you are planning to trade them later on to assets that fits your timeline. But giving a contract to someone like teague would be just dumb. He wouldnt only take minutes away from players we are gonna develope, he would start to decline when we are on a win now mode plus he would eat up cap space that could be used to improve the team when its smart

We also will need the vet PG to be a capable starter and start him as necessary, maybe even to begin the season as the starter. This might also happen at SF and even at PF. At this point we have to assume that some or all of these rooks won't be ready to start at the opening of season. So vets have to be there and be ready and able to do everything.

Teague's efficient and proven, 3:1 ast/to ratio last year, career high assists(on a brand new squad), he's a true triple threat. In general he's underrated, silent but deadly. He'd be a high-quality pickup. If they could land him and one of Gallinari or Otto Porter it'd be a bigtime infusion of vet talent thats equipped to do heavy-lifting.


With Fox and Mason on rookie deals there will be plenty of room to allocate $$$ to another PG. I don't see why they'd need to penny pinch or get some player who's markedly inferior for a third of the price. Teague is just a few years removed from being an All-Star..

I didn't say long-term deal either, if they want to pay him a decent amount for 1 year with a team option for the 2nd, that'd be ideal.

Look at it this way, he'd probably only cost what they paid Rudy Gay last season... It'd be a major upgrade.
 
Jeff Teague has outperfomed his pay grade every single season he's been in the NBA... Check the stats/salary, you'll see.
 
Jeff Teague will be starting somewhere on a long contract for big money. Zero chance he comes to sacramento, especially to serve as a mentor.

He just got moved and had issues with a young pg in Atlanta...
 
Will be extremely surprised if Joerger turns the keys over to a 19 year old rookie PG as starter. Unless Fox blows coach and everyone away in training camp to win job over whatever vet competition faced, Collison, Lawson, Temple, etc. Came someone name at rookie 19 year old that ever came into NBA immediately to start at PG? I believe Magic Johnson closest at age 20 when he took reins as rookie starting PG.

John Wall, Tyreke Evans and Derrick Rose IIRC. There's a theme with those players that Fox meets too, all coached by John Calipari in college..

Not allmost any rookie pg ever plays good winning basketball. But thats the beauty of Kings situation. They can get him the experience needed to be succesfull in 1 or 2 years. Signin Teague right now would be awfull. It takes time for rookie point guards to develope and this would be the perfect time for him to learn by making mistakes. We could really speed up the developement process. Same goes with Mason

I think all were age 20 when took court for first NBA game. Rose I recall had just turned 20 and then went not long afterwards to become youngest NBA player in history at 22 to be selected league MVP. Probably minor point about Fox being 19 to start upcoming season as turns 20 in December.
 
Is it wrong to say that's it wouldn't be bad for the Kings to overpay for players (including a pg) if the contract is a short one, such as two years, or three at the most? It's when these rookies and sophomores get good that you'll have to pay them in year four, right? Or wrong?

Depends on how comfortable they are going into the lux tax. If it's carte blanche then it wouldn't be bad. All these restricted deals grant them that freedom, they don't have to worry about being poached, they can match whatever deals.

Yeah it's one of those things that depends on the month. It's worth noting Fox seems to have a better head on his shoulders at this stage than those 3, also worth noting those 3 were a good bit more physically developed.

Well Kings shouldnt compromise their draft position next year or the developement (with playing time) of the young players. Signing a vet for 1-2 years is literally very short sighted and stupid
 
I think it's best to let collison walk he deserves to be on a contender with the amount of crap he had to go thru with the franchise
 
Lawson would be a good mentor for Fox since their playing styles are similar. Collison would be a better mentor overall but his style is more similar to Mason's. I've thought about it and with our pick next year and lack of a pick the year after, I don't really have a problem with just going with two rookies and Temple. He could back up PG and play SF while the younger guys get time to develop. I don't really want a pointless vet PG coming in and dropping us in the lottery while taking time away from the kids. Its not tanking when you're just developing the youth.
 
Here's hoping Fox/Mason aren't a repeat of Jimmer/IT of 2011 wherein Thomas was the unheralded pick that outperformed Jimmer. Let's hope both Fox and Mason are both really, really good and have long injury free careers. :)

The front office shouldn't be concerned with next year's draft position right now. As for player development, throwing the kids to the Wolves isn't always the best course of action. It can often lead to bad habits and lack of confidence.

Well in my opinion the next years draft should be one of the highest priorities fot front office. You cant be succesfull if you cant plan for a year ahead, especially with a young roster like ours. We are literally in a position that it couldnt be clearer that unnecessary vet signings would be stupid so im very confident that our FO staff will know what to do

We drafted a point guard at number five, we are a young team in the middle of a rebuild so nothing else makes sense than playing our 5th overall pick. Fortunately we have a good coach and another young pg so there are proper advice and competition.
 
I think everyone is in agreement that we should hopefully be winning games two seasons from now when we have no pick. The best way to do that probably involves spending our money wisely between now and then. If we can sign a guy this year that will help us win in '18-'19 then that's probably what we should do. I don't think we're going into full on tank mode this coming season. The kids will play because they make up the majority of our team but in all likelihood we're going to attempt to sign some good, maybe even big name, veterans that are going to play big minutes too.
