The Chick Flick Holocaust

Brick, you're much more of a trooper than I would have been. I can't stand the chick flicks, for the most part. I love movies that are genuinely romantic and funny, but pretty much anything that can be put in the "romcom" genre (what an icky little nickname) is sure to inspire a little Natural Born Killers rehab therapy.

In fact, I think there's only been one quasi-chick flick that I've ever liked, and it wasn't on your list. (I have always loved Joe Versus the Volcano -- don't ask me why.)

I've never understood the vast number of people that consider T&L to be a "chick flick," or, heaven forbid, some sort of cinematic feminist anthem.

Maybe it has more to do with the type of chick I am (or, consider myself to be, at least) but I see nothing remotely empowering in a film about two women who ulitmately have to commit suicide to make up for the problems caused by their thoughtless pursuit of attention and a good roll in the hay.

Now, for my GoGo trademark disclaimers:
1) This post was not aimed at Royal Diva, just venting on the way many people see this film
2) I've always really liked the film -- strong performances, interesting story, young Brad Pitt, etc. -- but I have always seen it as being far more mysoginistic than anything else
Me too-I can't stand that film, I was just using it as an example. The plot was empty and seemed to consist of nothing but man-bashing throughout. It was way overrated.

I think T&L was popular because there are a lot of women who hate men, sometimes justifyably. As the song says, "We are women, watch us roar, in numbers too great to ignore".

I think the point is that all that stuff in the t & l movie was them being dumb basically .....they don't really take responsibility for their lives they just get crapped on...well except for when she shot him!

This time we try romantic comedy stalwarts Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. Grant was amusing, but everything else was flat.
Was the pun intended?

Uh oh...

its BAACCKKK!!!

Just a heads up that I am currently in negotiation for Chick Flick Holocaust #2!

Negotiation I say, because no more chick flick bets for me -- oh no! No, learned my lesson. This is a hard-edged high-level negotiation...I was going to say "tit for tat" and then thought better of it. ;)

The terms thus far:

Mine:
-- 30 more chick flicks between now and Superbowl Sunday (I questioned how much deeper the barrel could possibly go, but I've been assured we're covered).
-- I am trying to get back-credit for a handful of flicks watched in the last few weeks, including the one tonight which inspired this conversation.

Hers:
-- None of your damn business. ;)

Keep you posted on all of the exciting developments... :D

This thread is HILARIOUS; congrats Brick!! :)

Next time, be sure to watch (I know it seems like I have no faith in your ability to win) "Shakespeare in Love" and "Clueless." Two of my personal favorites. ;)

Also, "Mean Girls" is quite cute as is "Bridget Jones Diary" and "Love Actually."

Good luck Brick! ;)

be sure to get Tuck Everlasting...it was imo, a really good movie...you should also see 10 things I hate about you...another good movie.....can you at least get Charlies Angels to qualify as a chick flick? Not a great movie, but it should be good as eye candy for you. ;)

Brickie,

I think it's time for you to try the "get tough" gambit. No more games and bets. take the prize and move on. That's how I'd handle it. When did you lose your generally-inflated confidence? It's time to step up.

I almost forgot. You need to understand that she wouldn't even be playing this game if she didn't want to lose the bet.

Brick, i salute you for these Chick Flick Holocaust... I just read this thread....Nice read!

By the way, what was your agreement with her of this and why did you lost the bet?

Can you share what the bets are if she lose? just tip of the iceberg....hehehe
I have no clue what is it... :)

I can't sit thru traditional chic movies. I tried to get thru "Anywhere But Here" with the girl from the Star Wars prequels and Tim Robbins' wife (can't remember either of their names right now). Couldn't make it. If a movie is relatively standard, yet has strong chic themes, I'm fine. "Ghost World" would be such a movie.

Brick do you have any input on the titles? I am sure some of us could suggest somt tollerable if not enjoyable chick flicks, but if she has sole discretion.... well sory dude.

Alrighty then -- the negotiations are done, the terms are set, time to start a new thread for CFH Part II! :p

Brick, you're clearly doing something wrong here. As a chick, I know that if her side of the wager includes.....all things implied, she wants to lose.

Or, is it more of a "if you do a, I'll do b" sort of a wager?

Drop the act Brick, we know you like the chick flicks. :p Seriously though, props to you for actually going through with it, I don't think I'd ever be able to survive. And as GoGoGadget pointed out (sexcellent picture btw GGG ;) ), it looks as though she's in this thing to lose anyway, so I doubt you'll have to go through such torture again. Well I hope so for your sake anyway.:D

Oh no -- as I mentioned a few posts ago, CFH II is no wager -- decided that approach was for the dogs. :) This one is a pure and simple negotiated deal with consideration on both sides.

P.S. of course she would GGG. (Who wouldn't with me! :p) But what you may have missed is that I wanted to lose the first time too, although I did not actually expect to. CFH I was an ends to a mean -- how to have an excuse to spend more time with her and make her feel comfortable/not intimidated around me.

Why can't you just have clumsy, emotionally racked, personal realtionships like the rest of us. There is clearly too much thought going on here.

Word.

Hey, I can do it too.

I salute you sir, I'd have eaten double barrels by the 10th day...

but where was Notting Hill on that list? I know you don't dig Julia, but I thought that movie was pretty good for a chick flick.

OMG, i could never do that brick...i give you major respect man, i think i might poke my eyes out through most of those...but hey man, love makes you do crazy things huh? It is a very funny bet though.
