Colangelo said Boston guard Rajon Rondo and Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince have formally been invited to be on the roster, of which players will be selected for the Worlds and the 2012 Summer Olympics, and USA Basketball is anticipating their acceptance. And Colangelo said he's closing in on inviting Oklahoma City forward Jeff Green, Golden State guard Stephen Curry and Sacramento guard Tyreke Evans to be on the roster.

I certainly hope that is NOT for this summer -- screw the honor -- this is a summer that needs Reke's full attention and work, not going out and farting around as a benchwarmer on Team USA.

In the future? Sure. He'll be one of the U.S.A.'s elite players and absolutely deserve the honor. But he's got more important things to accomplish this offseason.

I agree, plus his shot isn't consistent enough for the international game.

word...

tyreke will likely deserve such an honor in the future, but he needs to continue to round out his game before it makes sense to devote an excess of time to international competition...

Now now, im sure Tyreke will still have time to put up plenty of jumpshots with a shooting coach. Curry is definitely a nice addition. Gives us some much needed 3pt shooting.

I think this would be a GREAT opportunity fro Tyreke to be around GREAT veterans like Kobe,Lebron and Dwade. He's going to see how committed and hard working they are and it will be a fantastic learning experience for him. I remember hpw Lebron and Carmelo talked about how they started training harder in the ffseason after they saw how hard Kobe worked. I think it will have the same impression on Tyreke.

It's not about starting when you play for a national team... There you have 12 great players, but only 5 can start. What matters is how good you're going to play your role.

That's true. But at this point I'd rather Tyreke be working on his shot and stuff to help us instead of just "playing his role" on team USA.

"Plenty of time" does not equal greatness. Its not about being good enough, its about absolute dedication, something that Reke has been trying to line up for this sumer.

NTs are a massive distraction for international players, and would be for our rook too. Rather than 5 months of uninterrupted work, you get 2 1/2 months of uninterrupted work, fart around with your NT for 6-8 weeks, then maybe 2-3 weeks before its preseason time. It dramatically cuts into development time, and especially that deep heart of the summer time when you've got months of work behind you and everything is peaking and becoming second nature.

Leave it for the guys who are already there in their development. Reke has a date with greatness, and once he reaches that level, Team USA will be knocking any year he wants it. Just makes no sense at this stage of his career.

My reaction would be different for a less dedicated individual with less upside. Somebody who was going to work this summer, but not WORK. Then its still a distraction, but ok, whatever. This is different.

He may benefit more from staying at home and working on his game but the experience of playing on that USA team with those guys would do a great deal for him as well. He can work on aspects of his game in the meantime. I say it's too big to pass up.

Its only too big to pass up if you are never going to get another shot at it. If he does his work now, he'll be one of the first guys they call every offseason between now and 2025.

Let the other guys go, and MUHAHAHAHA all the way to the bank next season when you've improved more than any of them.

But now while his game is still forming is when he could gain the most from this kind of thing. I see either as a plus.

Me and my positive thinking. :p

Frankly I don't want Tyreke playing for the NT right now. He is about to complete the longest season of his life. That means he's tired. he needs to rest his body and begin the work that Bricklayer was posting about. He does not need to go out and prevent his body from recouping, and risk an injury.

Don't forget peopel he has tendonitis in one of his knee's and he's 20. I know it's pretty common, because these guys have been running and jumping since a very young age, but still. He needs to rest and put in work on his game.

I don't mind Tyreke playing with team USA this summer. If I'm not mistaken, the way it would work, is Tyreke would go to the week long training camp in Vegas at some point in July. He will already be training in LA, so it's a quick trip and only one week out of his off season.

Then, there is another camp in August, for the 12 guys going to Turkey. IMO, Tyreke has no chance of making the 12 man roster at this point, which is fine. That also means he wouldn't go to Turkey. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't mind Tyreke taking a single week out of his off season training to play with the team. Now, if he was invited back in August after the final cut, and then expected to travel to Turkey and around Europe for exhibitions, I might feel differently, but I don't see that happening.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing. If it works that way and it's just 2 weeks out of the summer with no travel I agree that would not be a big deal.

I agree with you. How can playing with the BEST players in the world be anything but beneficial? From what I recall, Kobe tutored Lebron on his jumpshot during the Olympics. Add to the fact that he gets to practice with all of the big guns, and Tyreke learns how to best use his strengths against them. Plus, the added international recognition would help land Sacramento back on the map. It's an honor to be on Team USA (especially as a 20 year old) and he would be foolish to reject the opportunity now. Who knows if the offer is extended again.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Colangelo said a few days ago that those players who refuse to play this summer, won't be invited for the Olympics 2012, right?

He has backed off that statement after LeBron got pissed about it. He has now said that if you have a valid excuse you can miss this summer and still play in 2012.

I think it's a terrible development, and I hope Tyreke refuses the "opportunity". He needs to do two things in the offseason - (1) rest, and (2) work like hell on that outside shot. Being on this team allow for neither to any significant degree, and it would put him at risk for an injury.

NO THANKS!

I agree with you that 5 months of practice is certainly better than 2 1/2 months. No argument there. Im immediately reminded of when Lebron James had a shakey jumpshot and joined team USA after his rookie year. I remember he made a point to improve his jumper before his sophmore season. Low and behold at the start of Lebrons sophmore season he has a decent jumper. Im POSITIVE Tyreke will make significant progress on his jumpshot before next year. Also, its not as if theres nothing for Evans to gain from playing on team USA. Playing around all that talent and playing well has done wonders for other players.

The new bloods like Tyreke and Curry are only going to be invited to the mini camp which is only about 1 week if I remember correctly. I read this news somewhere else last week. If its only 1 week, its great for him to meet the superstars and play with some of them and just get his hunger up even more to make the real team in a few yrs.

Correct me if im wrong, but tyreke is a top 25 NBA player. If all the 2010 FA's are going to sit out, that leaves alot of room on the roster for Evans. The question isn't if he wants to play, because he wants to play for gold in 2.5 years and this would be a way to slide into that team. The question is Nike or Adidas?

Tyreke is already signed under Nike supposedly. Its just a matter will he just be one of the sponsored players that gets his his own PE shoe of the mass lines such as Hyperize or Hyperdunk. But if he makes another jump next year, say... 25-5-5 and makes the all stars, then they'll probably give him his own shoe like they did to CP3 with Jumpman.

I can agree with that. A glorified meet and greet/understand your eliteness thing would be fine. Beneficial even. A serious interruption of training would not.
