[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Halftime Score: Sacramento 28- New Jersey 22

Jonathan Givony

Kevin Martin- By far the best player on the floor here, for his second game straight so far. Martin was not only the most explosive player here, he was also the most active. He was leaping all over the place, rebounding in traffic, elevating for beautiful floaters, and playing outstanding defense on Antoine Wright. He seemed to be the only player on Sacramento’s roster who was really willing to take the ball and make something happen for his team. He had no problem taking the ball strong to hoop and taking contact or getting dirty in the paint on the other end despite his skinny frame. Martin was just too quick and fluid for most people to keep up with, but he didn’t force the issue too much regardless and had no problem making the extra pass. If he can show the ability to consistently hit the outside shot here in Summer League, you may be looking at Sacramento’s starting two guard next season.

Francisco Garcia – For the second straight game, Garcia looks pretty off and nowhere close to the player he was in college. His shot wasn’t falling for him, he struggled defensively, he had trouble making the right decisions offensively and he just looked completely out of tune.

Antoine Wright- Wright was quiet once again, but was pretty effective regardless. He was handling the ball a lot, but often preferred to make the extra pass instead of strictly looking for his own shot and come up with a couple of nice assists in the process. His jumper was hit or miss, but he looked pretty good on the defensive end. Once again, not a great game, but also not a bad game out of Wright.

Ronnie Price- Price was feeling it from outside and did a good job putting the ball in the basket. He handled the ball a bit but didn’t really show much in terms of PG skills in the process.

Ellie Myles- Myles was his usual tough and scrappy self; rebounding, playing tough defense, knocking people in the paint and trying to make things happen around the basket. His jump hook wasn’t falling for him at all, but he made a few nice passes today. Nothing special out of Ellis here.

Does anyone think KMart game is like a cross between RIP and Doug game. I think he has a future as SG in a league either this year or next.

Based solely on last year, no.
I cant wait to see what he has done for himself this summer.

I haven't seen Martin play as much as I would have liked to. BUT it does sound promising that he is being aggresive. I hope he comes to training camp with the attitude that he is the future of this team, and that he deserves the starting role.

If he can show the ability to consistently hit the outside shot here in Summer League, you may be looking at Sacramento’s starting two guard next season.

Francisco Garcia – For the second straight game, Garcia looks pretty off and nowhere close to the player he was in college. His shot wasn’t falling for him, he had trouble making the right decisions offensively and just looked completely out of tune. In the 2nd half he came back a little stronger on the defensive end but was absolutely hell bent on scoring on a few consecutive possessions down the floor, resulting in being rejected embarrassingly by Derrick Zimmerman on a mid-range jumper. Garcia finished 1-8 from the field and will surely want to forget the beginning of his summer league career.

Antoine Wright- Wright was quiet once again, but was pretty effective regardless. He was handling the ball a lot, but often preferred to make the extra pass instead of strictly looking for his own shot and come up with a couple of nice assists in the process. His jumper was hit or miss, mostly miss, but he looked pretty good on the defensive end. Once again, not a great game, but also not a bad game out of Wright.

Ronnie Price- Price was feeling it from outside and did a good job putting the ball in the basket. He handled the ball a bit but didn’t really show much in terms of PG skills in the process. In the 2nd half he made some very nice passes but still struggled at times handling the ball so much. Regardless, a really nice game for Ronnie Price today. He played solid defense, showed the right attitude and didn’t make too many mistakes.

Erik Daniels- After being t’d up and benched for the entire game last time around after an altercation with Ron Slay, Daniels came back and had a nice little game for himself against the Nets. He did a good job hitting his shot from outside, the #1 thing he has to show here, and also did good work defensively, passing the ball and on the glass.

Ellie Myles- Myles was his usual tough and scrappy self; rebounding, playing tough defense, knocking people in the paint and trying to make things happen around the basket. His jump hook wasn’t falling for him at all, but he made a few nice passes today. Nothing special out of Ellis here.

Eric Weiss

Antoine Wright-Not much has gone right for Antoine these first three games, but Antoine has begun to temper his enthusiasm for taking every shot he wants. Wright’s drives were much more selective in this game and he had much success when doing so, often getting the assist if his lane was cut off. Wright’s shot is still flat from the perimeter as he looks to be rushing his delivery to beat the defensive pressure. Certainly his best showing from a composure standpoint and I’d expect his shooting percentage to increase the rest of the week. Not afraid of contact in traffic, that’s for sure…

Sam Clancy- Just a solid overall game for big Sam. He’s got the power to back his man down and shows a very solid understanding of when his shot is there as well as where his teammates are when he’s got the ball. New Jersey was so bad for most of this game that Sam had to organize the offense for most of the second half, he did so quite well. I’m not sure how solid his jumper is, but he looked smooth on one baseline shot and if he can add that to his repertoire I think he could stick on a roster in need of a thinking man’s power forward.

Melvin Sanders- I didn’t intend to be writing about Sanders today, but he forced me to do it. Melvin had the most complete game of anyone on the court today with the exception of Kevin Martin. Sanders scored from inside and out, driving to the lane for pull-ups and showing a nice touch from the perimeter. His floor spacing and timing on his moves without the ball were the best of any player by far and he capitalized on every opportunity that presented itself. Great game for this guy

For some reason Draft Express has always been negative toward Cisco. Not sure why but even during the season they were like that. I would not read too much into it.

Cisco's final stats were incorrectly reported by draft express.
He finished 2-10 FG, 0-3 3FG, 3-3 FT, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 1 TO and 6 fouls. Sure, he didn't shoot well but not nearly as poor as DA made him seem.

hmmmmmmmmm, garcia only had 7 points, but he's one of the 2 players that got steals. he's the only player that got over 1 steal. 3

Actually a little bit, but I saw last year that he likes to go up strong and draw the contact. This is good new b/c we haven't had a guy that can single handedly get another team in fould trouble, in that light he kind of reminds me of Kobe Bryant. I hope Kevin gets some serious minutes next year.

Garcia having another tough game, he'll catch on quick though. I like the looks of his defensive stats. Thats what we need!

am i the only one that thinks that if k-mart is gonna have any success in this league he's gonna have to hit the weight room?

Special K, as has been mentioned before, has put on about 15 lbs of muscle thus far. He has spent a lot of time in the weight room and continues to do so. You make it sound as if he doesn't "hit the weight room" at all, and that is just not the case.

Depends on if putting too much weight on would affect his athletic ability, which is one of his best assets.

i didn't know that he put on 15lbs of muscle. would anyone have a pic of him now? perhaps in a summer game?

Wow. I was at that game, and I would switch the Martin and Garcia analysis. Garcia was the guy guarding Wright the whole game, so that part was way off. Moreover, Garcia is everywhere on D, just as in college. He had 4-5 blocks not one, but they were weakside blocks so they were probably incorrectly scored. His shot was off, but he was the guy orchestrating the offense, just like in college. He's a vocal leader. You hardly know Martin is on the court except for when he walks by to talk to Elston. Martin started scoring more in the 2nd, but I would have never guessed that he had 21. Martin's shot has a pronounced hitch to it, and rather than take quick open threes, he kept pump-faking so he could take a penetration dribble and shoot. More effective defenders will shut him down.

That Zimmerman block that the guy is talking about happended on a fast break where Garcia elevated to pass, got caught in mid-air, and was forced to shoot. He got blocked. He also ran right back down the court and got a steal.

All in all I thought both had good games, but was more impressed by Garcia. I think Martin would be a great score-first backup, but this game analysis by the draft site is quite shocking to me.

Look in some of the back threads in the main forum, tyrant. I believe 1kingzfan AND kings52/23 both posted pics of Kevin during the SPDL games.

Venom, thanks for that update from someone with a realistic view of things. The guy who wrote that has always been negative towards Garcia but i am not sure why. He's also the guy who got fired from Draft City and threatened with a lawsuit for slandering an agent....FWIW

yeah, the article was saying how martin was orchestrated the offense, but he had 7 turnovers and only 2 assists....that isnt very promising to me

i still think martin is the better choice at the 2guard, but not if we resign Mo.

I'm hoping we'll get another summer league report from CruzDude who has been really objective about both Kevin and Cisco.

They're both Kings. I'd like to see us rooting for both of them instead of already trying to pick one over the other...

I'm just thrilled I can come on here and find updates, box scores, etc. on these games. We don't get much news on the summer league games here in Ohio, unless the local newspaper prints something days after the fact. Even then those articles are based more around how Kevin did than the game as a whole.

And hey, we all have our favorites that we like to cheer on, but I have to agree with VF about rooting for all the Kings players out there.

Why do i feel a Marting vs. Garcia thing coming on amongst kings fans. Please tell me this isn't the new Peja vs. Webber.

that is the best quote I have read on here all day.

I have a feeling as I said in another thread about a week ago that everyone wants the "LASSASSIN" to fail

They are both on our team folks. Looks like Kmart may have worked on his game some which is great for us. Bottom line is a ring, I don't care if ostertag starts at the 2 as long as he is productive and helps the team.

That said sound like Kenny is having a great run right now. THis is great for us. ALso give Garcia a chance to actually learn the offense. What has been 2 days since he played it.

my personal opinion, I don't care who starts, comes in for relief whatever. Bottom line is a RING....

I posted this in another thread this morning and I completely agree.

"well, from the summer league stats and reports, it looks as if Kevin Martin is doing a superb job compared to Cisco and the rest of the squad. I think this competition between the two of them is only going to better them both. There shouldn't even be an argument over this, we should be excited that there is competition between two young bucks."

I was thinking the same thing.

It shouldn't be. They'll both play alot. I would imagine Garcia would start because he is a defense first, point-forward type that would mesh with the first unit. Then you bring in Martin to light it up, with a second unit that includes guys like Skinner, Tag, and Corliss. Whoever's playing best finishes the 4th if its tight. To me it's simple. Now, if you get caught up in who starts, I guess it's a big problem.

Because too many people are fans of their player 1st and foremost. They are only Kings fans when their favorite player is with the Sacramento Kings. So, since this player is their favorite (whoever it is) they want them to do well, often at the expense of another player.

So, we don't have enough TEAM fans. Even your favorite player is a TEAM fan, and if he isn't then....I, for one, would just as soon see them in someone else's uniform.

You have several new posters here including myself. Many due to Cisco being drafted by the Kings. I was a Kings fan before Cisco got drafted so it's not an issue with me. Others however may be new "Kings fans" though and i am sure that's alot of it. I am also sure Cisco will be fine but it's still about TEAM and WINS.
