Jason Jones is in vegas with the summer league team. what info do we get from practices? "team running drills" Mclemore didn't know about Dee Browns dunk.

Not how the coaches appear to be approaching things offense, defense, how jent seems to work with the players. Nothing on BMC how he looks. does he look comfortable shooting are we working on his handles? Is he taking set shots? picks and roll? is he slashing. Alot of team concept can come from summer league with a new coaching staff. Yet we get stupid high school reporter type crap.

I'm arguably as critical of Jones as anyone on this board, but summer league just started. It's not like he's had a lot of opportunities to observe things yet...

From the few articles and tweets I've read from this guy I came to a conclusion right away that they are very few "beat-reporters" in any sport that are as disinterested and disengaged in the team they cover as Jason Jones.

As many beat reporters have often said, technically they are supposed to be unbiased and report on the team in a neutral stance. However when you are with the team everyday and travel with them, it's difficult not to build relationships with the players and coaches......and even more difficult not to at least sub-consciously root for the team you cover. As a result most beat-reporters have a subtle rooting interest in the teams they cover and many are downright homers.

Yet Jason Jones has managed to pull off the ever difficult process of not only not caring on whether or not the team does well.......he almost seems to prefer if they fail.

well he said he was at practice today. what more opportunities are going to come?
It was the first day of mini-camp. I'll give him a day before I start to bemoan the obvious.

On a related note, however, here's something from Twitter (note who retweeted it):

He makes no bones about being from LA and being a Laker fan.

If our new front office swings her as an offseason pick-up, regardless of my distaste of many of their other moves, I will consider the summer a success

Could definitely go without his attitude conveyed in tweets, but at least he's keeping us somewhat informed.

Of course, he works for a paper that let go Sam Amick - now a leader in breaking NBA stories and in-depth insider analysis - and still retains "A.V." - who fancies chiseled physiques vs. actual basketball insight - so I'm not sure the Bee's decision-making is top-notch...we're stuck Mr. Jones in that regard.

Watching Kings scrimmage. McCallum's quickness stands out. Just drive lane and dunked w/ ease

McCallum is showing off some good passing ability, too.

Compared to most bee Kings beat reporters of the past, I find JJ boring and pretty uninformative. Sam Amick was my favorite, probably.
He gets much more excited about WWE events (yes, this is a grown man) and hip-hop. It's good to have a personality and enthusiasm, but he shows it for all the wrong things as a public figure/reporter.

I'm telling you don't sleep on McCallum, athletic guard with good size, high iq, if he is quick and develops a midrange jumper, he has all the tools for a pg to thrive in the modern NBA. That pic is impressive for a 6'2-6'3 PG, regardless if its Summer League.

I don't follow college so I don't know much about him, but i did read that he could have gone to a higher profile school but chose to go to his dad's school. Do you think if he would have gone to a better school that he would have been closer to a 1st rounder? Everything I read about him sounds good.

Yeah i think he would have at least been a first rounder, he was a McDonalds All American in High School and I know UCLA, Florida and some other big programs were going after him. He's a good kid too, watching all his interviews, looks like he is gonna be a hard working pro(thats what separates guys with potential and guys that make it in the league). You can come into the league with all the accolades about your talent, but if you are lazy and don't take this serious you waste away your career. I don't see this guy doing that, going to be a hard worker.

Also he has that C-Webb scowl, love guys that play with that intensity/swagger.

I'm truly excited to see how he does. I know IT was a GREAT second round pick, as usually our second rounders don't amount to much. But I don't remember ever being as excited about a second rounder as I have been with McCallum. I'm not sure if that is due to stuff I have read about him or the fact that our front office/coach seem to be in love with him.

I read an article on McCallumn and it says he doesn't have much of a wing span and isn't quick. It also says he doesn't shoot exceptionally well either. That makes it sound grim but he has a well rounded game and the flip side is that he doesn't have any huge weakness. So, no big weakness and no big skill but in between there is a very competent PG. We'll see soon enough but the 40" vert will keep people buzzing for awhile. I think he was a good pick in a draft that was filled with PGs. I think he'll be on the roster.

in non-Kings news, Michael Carter-Williams went 3/16 FG in his summer league game today...
MCW has not changed anyone's mind about his shooting thus far. Philadelphia is the early clubhouse leader in the hunt for Wiggins.

Trey Burke has struggled pretty mightily as well. He's not pushing the pace and he's clearly being targeted by opposing guards. Utah coaches sat him for the last game hoping that seeing the game from the bench might help. We'll see.

Kelly Olynyk has looked great. I'm not surprised at his skill level, he showed that all year. What I AM surprised by is how effective he is in summer league. I figured when defenders got bigger and athletic all his quick spins, up & unders, pump and gos etc would not work as well and he'd have to simplify his repetoire a bit. Kind of like Spencer Hawes who ended up doing move, countermove, counter-counter move only to take a heavily contested shot when he was a King. But Olynyk is still getting it done offensively. Obviously the NBA is a big step up from Summer League but if he can make the adjustment on the next level and still do his thing then Boston may have themselves a very versatile weapon on offense and a hustle/energy guy on defense and the boards. I'm impressed thus far.

Andre Drummond had a great game. 23 and 18 I believe. He didn't look as dominant as his stats would make it seem but that's almost more impressive to me - that he can pick up boards and easy points while growing as a defender all as a role player. I don't think he'll ever be a superstar (I just don't see it in his on court demeanor or skillset) but he's going to be a HUGE piece for the Pistons. I'm still mad we didn't draft him.

I'm very excited for Saturday. Then maybe we can stop focusing on Tyreke and Iguodala and Vasquez and actually evaluate McLemore and McCallum for their summer league play. Hopefully they impress.

MaCallum's wingspan is a little over 6'3 (about average), but he is know for being both quick and athletic. His biggest weakness is his 3pt shooting (33% this season), but he shot 54% from 2pt range this season. It will be interesting to see how he develops.

For all those aching for news, this week is only mini-camp and as such is not about playing games 5-on-5, yet. As Malone has said all week mini-camp is about installing his defensive philosophy and practice, practice and practice to help all the guys to learn what he wants. I get impression there are 2 or 3 "practices" a day all about basics for all in mini-camp. So nothing really to report other than standard, non-game stuff.

One tidbit from another Kings info site was that Jorge Gutierrez, the 6-3 Defensive Player of the Year in Pac-12 from Cal on the summer league roster was taking McCallum to school as part of McCallum's mini-camp training. Jorge is apparently a super PG defender and showing that skill well this early into mini-camp.
