Summer League roster info ?

Anyone know who is going to play on our summer league team? Any guesses ?

I figure T-Rob is going to go, hopefully Whiteside and Jimmer join him. I wouldn't even be against Thomas joining them to help them get familiarized a bit more.

There is a PG from the D League too.

Supposedly Smart wants everyone there.

i think IT might be there. He loves the game and just wants to play. it could be good to start creating some connection between him and T-Rob.

#5
why wouldn't IT be there? he's a soph that should make it mandatory for him to go. I'd like to see boogie there, too, if it doesn't conflict with his team USA stuff, he's only participated in one VSL, too.

This could be Smart's normal attempts to play camp counselor and get some chemistry building in, but I hope he's not actually asking everybody to come so we can play them all in these games. That violates the spirit of summer league games, and in fact might even be an illegal offseason scrimmage/practice under the CBA. We're supposed to be seeing what progress Jimmer has made in the offseason, how TRob looks, and be looking for hidden gems amongst undrafted guys, not running a scrimmage for our full squad.

Tony Mitchell (North Texas) and Willie Reed (St. Luis) will play for the Kings in SL. I don't really know those players, just reporting what I read.

Tony Mitchell is...a 6'7" 215lb POWER FORWARD. who averaged 14.7pts 10.3reb 3.0blks for Nowhere State last year.

Willie Reed is a 6'9" 220lb POWER FORWARD  who averaged 12.4pts 7.9reb and 2.1blks last year for the same schoool where Anthony Bonner once averaged 19.9pts 13.8rebs.

In other words, we're upset we couldn't draft Henson and are looking for a replacement. ;)

It's junior SF from Alabama, not PF from North Texas. He had a big sophomore season but didn't improved last season. Athletic, but not particularly skilled.

I did not know this until I looked it up, but there are actually two guys with the same name. Mass said we invited the North Texas guy, not the Alabama team cancer (got suspended by the team for being a punk basically).

yeah i am from Alabama and an Alabama fan. coach Grant suspended half the team last year at some point in time. Details never came out about why. Grant did say it wasn't one thing but an accumulation of small things. He is a great defender and very athletic SF. Could be a lesson learned type thing. If he plays the way he can play he will open some eyes in summer league. I'd say D-league him and see if his suspension was warranted.

IT should not play

I think IT has established himself, and we need to let jimmer get some burn, specifically see if he can even bring the ball up the court (because he couldn't last year).

If Jimmer can't bring the ball up the court then we figure him to be a two-guard.

PG- Jimmer
SG- ???
SF- Tony Mitchell
PF- ThRob
C- Whiteside

Honeycutt is in a walking boot

Agree for the most part. I'd consider Terrence Williams as the 'SG' in that roster if he'd be willing to go for it. Not that he needs it, but he's the kind of guy who could use some reps with some of the other bench players on the roster (Jimmer and Whiteside for sure, possibly Robinson if JT continues to start until Robinson eventually beats him out). And he really liked playing with Jimmer last season. They could continue to grow in this scenario.

I also remember hearing a report back when the season was ending that Outlaw wanted to play in the summer league.

Jimmer
TWill
Outlaw
Robinson
Whiteside

... would be a decent way to create some bench chemistry. In other years I don't think I would be as 'for it' .. but with so little wiggle room, it's unlikely any of the undrafted guys would sniff our roster this season.

Don't quote me on this, but I think you can only play in summer league your first three years in the league. So technically, Cuz could play if he wanted to. And who knows, he might suit up for a game, but that would probably be about it. I think what Smart wanted, was for as many of the team as possible to show up and support the summer league team. He's trying to build team chemistry.

Its a shame that Honeycutt got injuried. It was a golden opportunity for him to get his foot in the door as a rotational player. Probably not going to happen now. If I had to guess, our team will be made up of Robinson, I. Thomas, J. Fredette, Whiteside, bottom tier freeagents, and undrafted players. Cuz maybe for a game of two, and that depends on whether he makes the final cut for the olympic team.

I think anyone can play, most just choose not to.

RonRon for instance decided to play a few summer league games for us while he was here.

Yes, I think that as a player you're supposed to be available to play the first 3 years if your team wants you to play.
Then if you've been in the league more than 3 years the team isn't supposed to ask/require that you play, but you can play a bit if you want. (As Ron did one year)

I can see it if you're coming back from an injury and want a game or two of 'real' competition to shake some rust off, or the like. But I would be surprised to see Cousins play any games this year, though it could be fun. And I don't see TWill playing, but would be ecstatic if he considered playing because that would mean that we re-signed him.

I agree that Jimmer should get major minutes at the point guard. Put the pressure on him in the summer league to run the show. If he can't do it in the summer league, then that probably give you a clear indication of where to play him next year in the regular season.

Personally, I'd like to see the coming attraction of the IT - Robinson show, but having Jimmer get major minutes is more important, imo.

Yeah, he's a very athletic player, and more of a 6'6" SG to my mind. Unfortunately his outside shot is suspect.

Jason Jones just tweeted that I. Thomas wouldn't be playing in summer league. That Jimmer would be the center of attraction at PG. Probably a good idea to get Jimmer as much experience as possible at running the pt.

Nunnally's a local guy who has some talent. Nothing special, just a good all around wing who could sneak unto a camp with hard work, like wes matthews.

Akognon was a big scorer in the Big West too a few years ago and is essentially a poor man's Jimmer, could make it somewhere if he can improve his handles.

Tony Mitchell is a nice player to take a look at too.

Don't really see any of these guys making a dent on the roster though.

Thought I'd put some numbers with some of the summer league players. I'm familar with most, but more some than others. So I'll list the players of note, or to put it another way, the ones that might have a slight chance of making our team, first.

Darnell Jackson: I don't think I need to say much about Darnell. I'm sure most of you remember him from two years ago. I thought he played pretty well in a backup role, and I'd say he might have a chance to make our roster this year, depending on what we do in the offseason, in a similar capacity.

Egar Sosa: 6'2" PG. Played at Louisville and averaged 13.1 PPG along with 4.5 APG. Tough hardnosed kid that I always thought could find a place in the NBA.

Patrick Christopher: 6'5" SG. Played a Cal and graduated in 2010. Good all around player. Averaged 15.6 PPG and 5.4 RPG. Not a bad shooter, but his outside shot was inconsistent.

Alex Young: 6'6" SG/SF. Played at IUPIU and I was surprised he wasn't drafted. He averaged 20.4 PPG along with 5.9 RPG. Once again, his 3pt shot is suspect, but he proved he can score. Pretty good athlete.

Yancy Gates: 6'9" PF. Played for Cinn. and never lived up to his hype coming out of highschool. Not the most athletic guy in the world, but he's good at taking up space. He's sort of a Ronny Turiaf type of player. I don't see him making it in the NBA unless its as an enforcer type of player.

Adrian Oliver: 6'4" SG. Started his college career at Wash and then transfered to San Jose St. where he became one of the top scorers in his conference at 24 PPG. He also averaged 5.3 RPG. Good shooter who shot 40.9% from the 3pt line.

Lazeric Jones: 6'1" PG. Yep, another in the long line of UCLA PG's. Not a bad player who averaged 13.5 PPG and 4.1 APG, on a dysfunctional team. Decent to good defender.

Josh Akognon: 5'11" SG. Yep, you read me right. The kid can score, but he's a SG in a PG's body. He started his career at Wash St. and then transfered to Cal State-Fullerton, where he was one of the scoring leaders in his conference. He averaged 23.9 PPG. Unfortunately, he couldn't even average 2 assists a game.

Michael Lee: 6'8" PF. Played for St. Bonaventure and averaged 17.5 PPG and 8.0 RPG. I didn't see him play much, so I don't have any comments.

Tony Mitchell: 6'6" SF/SG. Played for Alabama, and he's not a bad player. I think his best position is SF, where he's somewhat undersized. Not a bad scorer averaging 13.1 PPG and 7 RPG. Good athlete, just sort of a tweener.

Kenny Gabriel: 6'8" PF. Played for Auburn averaging 12.2 PPG and 7.3 RPG.

Augustis Gilchrist: 6'10" 241 LB PF/C. Played for Southern Florida and averaged 9.5 PPG and 5 RPG. He has little or no chance to play in the NBA.

Rob Kurz: 6'9" PF. Played for Notre Dame and graduated in 2010 if memory serves. Not a bad player, but he's probably one of those guys thats just outside the area he needs to be. He averaged 12.5 PPG and 7.1 RPG.

Dominique Johnson: 5'11" PG. Played for North Texas and wasn't a bad player. He averaged 10.2 PPG and 3.2 APG.

Jarrod Jones: A player I'm not familiar with. Records show he played at Grambling, but I can find no stats attached to his name. So I have no idea what kind of player he is, other than he's 6'7".

Looking forward to seeing Whiteside. 2 years and hasn't shown much so now's the time to start building some momentum. Lead the summer league in block and rebounds!
