Summer League Game 3 Quick and Exciting Grades

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
#1
Greene ( B ) -- solid game really playing the roleplayer off of Cousins, which is interesting when you see the third year guy with a lot of talent deferring to a first year phenom. Repeatedly got out on the break to receive nifty passes from Cousins.
Whiteside ( C+ ) -- shaky hands early, but hit another nice little side bankshot. Was having trouble finishing insde again, and just not as effective as a shotblocker since that first game. Used a good dropstep in the 4th and may actually have had more flashes of intriguing offense than defense this time. Better on the boards this time out.
Cousins ( A ) -- kid is just flat out good. Scratch that. Kid is great. Early on thought he looked tired and was hoisting too many long jumpers, but even so he seemed particularly focused on being unselfish and was dropping nice dimes all over the place. Continues to gobble defensive boards and turn them into outlets to key the break. Got into a running verbal and physical battle against big scrub Greg Stiemsma. Not sure you could say he exactly overpowered him, but just went over and around him nearly at will after a while. Had a couple of beautiful quick spin moves to the baseline for finishes. Showed off a nice FT stroke when fouled. Continued to really impress just with the constant aggression. Has so much to his game that he calls for the ball time and again and comes up with something new every time, and it all looks comfortable. And then added in something new -- it came winning time, he demanded the ball repeatedly down the stretch, adn just carried us home, including dropping the game winner. Summer league or not, this is a big time player. This is star #2 in back to back drafts.
Thompson ( C ) -- nice open court finish, not able to provide the spacoing
wih the jumper, took a hard fall on the break and did not return
Rice ( C+ ) -- I'm beginning to lose what little interest I had in this SL scrub PG battle. Rice got nothing done in the early going, but hit a couple of shots and set up Atchley for a shot in the later moments of the the half. Some senseless gunning on his part was a factor in us slipping back and losing our lead, and for stretches Cousins was doing a better job as a distributor. Redeemed himself with some nice plays down the stretch but can't say this sort of performance gives yuo any confidence he should be running the big club.

Atchley ( D ) -- ineffective defensively, or at anything else, hit an open baseline jumper for his highlight. can we have Chism back please?
Casspi ( C ) -- this was an odd game for Omri. As a certain familiar sounding announcer noted, there seemed to be a deliberate plan throughout for Omri to post and slam inside. Problem was it did not feel like it really came within the flow. He was not always able to fiinish through the contact, and at times it seemed like the wrong play to even try. Not sure whether to blame that one on Omri or the coaching staff though, given the apparent deliberate strategy. Of more concern was the defense, where it was Omri who got lit up by Wayne Ellington as the Wolves came back and tried to steal this one, and those selfishness questions again. All throughout his rookie year Omri, who is too sophisticated a player not to know better, had these selfish moments, often seemingly almost out of pique at not getting as many shots as he wanted etc. And he seemed to be at it again here, while our big rookie center seemed delighted to be getting everybody involved, Omri wasn't moving the ball, notched 0 assists, and capped things with a blatantly selfish play on the break when instead of dumping the pass to Cousins rumbling down the lane for a dunk (and you always reward your big men for running), Omri faked the pass, pulled it back himself with a man right on him, and was fortunate to get fouled. Was this because Cousins was featured and he was not? Don't know. Just know it was a bad play, and particualrly ridiculous given how unselfish Cousins has shown himself to be these first 3 games. Fortunately kept on attacking got a stong dunnk in the early 4th as an alternate memory from this one, but I was not as happy as the solid numbers suggest I should be.
Downey ( C ) -- came in and no more effective than Rice, repeatedly turning the ball over. Did amusingly wade in there and scramble around showing the big boys how its done with 5 boards in 10 minutes.
Christmas ( B- ) -- struggled at most everything for much of the game, but finally hit a three in the early 4th and it keyed him on a good run. Picked up a nice finsih on the break from Rice, and slashed again to the hole a few minutes later -- soemthign he is not supposed to excel at. He still ended up with another 0reb 0ast effort -- he is fascinatingly one dimensional -- but there was some life here and his contribtuions down the stretch helped us win the champions...er....summer league game.

I guess because I'm old school, Whiteside has gotten a lot of points from me because of the two bank shots he's taken and made. I hope the kid keeps it up. Why more players don't use the bank shot is beyond me, especially when Duncan, the greatest pf ever to play the game, has been a master of it.

That bank and the nice lil drop step he did, sadly if he can make those automatic in his repetiore than he will be in the rotation from day one, any offense from this shot blocking beast is a plus.

One quick thing about him I've noticed after 3 games that his offense is wayyyyyyyyy ahead of his defense and this is a GREAT sign. I don't think theres been a big man prospect in years that was drafted high that came into the league at this age with ready made post moves. Once again I don't wanna get too hyped up but its kinda hard not too

The only thing keeping Cousins off the court come this October is foul trouble or injury. I know it's summer league and you have to account for that, but it's way too obvious the kid has skills that will help a team win games. All he needs is experience and time to learn the league. I thought it was good that Westphal pulled him aside at halftime and refocused his frustrations. I think teams will learn quickly that maybe it's better not to send out people to hack him and fire him up.

May the force be with Cousins. We've been plagued by injuries with our stars in the past. It's especially bad with Cousins if he gets injured because he will gain weight. The other problem is if guys just run into him, especially star guys like Kobe, he will get an unfair foul and he can lose his cool. So you're right, those are 2 key things that can cause trouble for him. If he stays out of foul trouble and stays healthy, we can win a lot of games.

It's like he never scores exactly the same way twice, which is great that he has that array of weapons, but at some point he almost has too many options at his disposal. Eventually, there's something to be said for developing some bread and butter moves. I also get the impression that he understands his options and counters in a given position on more of an instinctual level. He may not know what he's going to do until he senses the opportunity and goes with the hook, or the turnaround, or the spin-move into a baseline drive, or the......etc.

Again, for a young player to have this feel for the game is incredible. But imagine once somebody teaches him on an intellectual level the purpose behind moves and counters and positions on the floor and the power of leverage. He's obviously a quick learner; I've read that he started the year at Kentucky with almost no post game and look at him now.
We're seeing the raw materials of a really advanced and nuanced offensive game. I just can't wait to see how it all comes together.

As excited and impressed as I am with the skills and size, I'm also impressed he played three games in three days and got better each game. There was no travel involved so its not some kind of Ripkenian streak, but its a good sign.

Or, at very least, was consistently good, which is pretty rare in SL. Even (presumably) excellent players often stink up one or two... see, for example, Evan Turner.

It's like the guy knows how to play every instrument in the band, but hasn't gotten the knack of learning to read sheet music yet. But I think it's just a matter of time and then we'll see some kick butt songs!

He also played more minutes in each successive game: 26, 31, 35. Some were even questioning if he could play more than mid-20 minutes, and here he is 34 minutes into his third game in three, calling for the ball and delivering in the clutch.

Early on thought he looked tired and was hoisting too many long jumpers
I only saw the fourth quarter, and will speed through the rest of the game tonight. But I thought it was encouraging to see DMC doing whatever he wanted late in the game. He definitely looked spent, but he didn't look fatigued or anything like that. Ran the break a couple times late in the game, put the ball on the floor and went past his man, was strong on the jump hook... The only time he really looked tired, to me, was the contested fadeaway that he airballed (they gave him an assist on Donte's follow). But he was right back down there making strong moves on the next possession.

Considering the fact that this was the third night in a row for a guy who is supposedly out of shape, it's great that he was still effective in 35 minutes of playing time. I'm assuming we'll be giving him 20 or so at the beginning of the season, and as the year goes on, he'll be able to handle increased playing time with no problem, based on what I've seen these past three nights.

By the way, that familiar sounding announcer seemed entirely giddy watching the big fella to go work out there. Awesome.

He hates blatant homers that won't admit it <coughMagiccough> but he was pretty fired up about Cousins being on his 'alma mater'.

They gave him an assist on that obvious airball? wow. Is the stats guy a relative of his?

Tyreke vs. Cousins

I didn't watch any Summer League games last year. Would someone please compare the success Tyreke had last year at the SL compared to how Cousins is doing this year? Thanks.
