Stern's Nightmare

#1
Having to hand the Championship trophy to Mark Cuban MUST be one of David Stern's biggest nightmares. I'll bet he is losing sleep now just thinking about it. The idea of Stern squirming in terror delights me significantly.

Love him or hate him Cuban has been very good for the NBA. He took a doormat of a team nobody cared about and turned it into a power and they pack the seats at AAC every game. He's a savvy businessman who is ahead of the technology curve and I'm sure some of his other ventures benefit the league in ways we don't always hear about. He's a pioneer in HDTV and other media which can only enhance exposure of not only the Mavs but every other team in the league. His antics also probably also bump up the ratings just a tiny bit since there are some people that will tune in just to see what he might do next.

That said I totally understand why people hate him and it kills me that they are likely to win and we still haven't but realistically Stern has to be far happier about this development than another Spurs or Detroit championship.

I don't know... it would be like a police captain being forced to give a well-known criminal a good citizen award for saving someone. I'll bet Stern is irritated to no end... the ONE guy who always calls out the refs and the league office... and he is gonna get the big prize...

Agreed, but home teams are expected to win on the home court. It's the first team that wins on the opponent's court that's gonna make the difference.

True that, but.....the Mavs have won that last 14 out of 15 games and the last 4 (comprised of the players in the finals right now)...2 in the reg. season and the first 2 in the finals by double digits. Things don't look too good for the Heat.

true that.

however, there is no way that miami wins this series. they aren't deep enough, they aren't quick enough (even with wade and j-will), and they can't score enough. dallas has five starters that can carry the team on any given night, and maybe one or two guys off the bench that can play hero for a game. miami has shaq and wade. nobody else can carry that team, and shaq is clearly worn down. so that leaves wade to step it up and carry the team for the next 2-5 games. as good as wade is, i don't think he's there yet. he's more like jordan stylistically than any of the recent and current phenoms, but i think he still lacks the clutch game and the presence of mind to do whatever is necessary to win. he'll get there eventually, but he's not quite there yet. dirk nowitzki is, however.

dallas is a helluva team. they destroyed a san antonio team that was ****in' good. make no mistake, people, the spurs were built to win the title this year. they just didn't expect avery johnson's mavericks team to be more dynamic, quicker, tougher, more balanced, and more lethal than nellie's mavericks teams of the past. dallas is the new standard. the all-defense san antonio-detroit series everyone expected is no longer the goal. teams are going to need to strike a balance between offense and defense in order to beat a team like the mavericks. i underestimated them through much of the season, and even in the playoffs. i knew they were good, but i didn't think they were that good. now dirk has the opportunity to write himself into legend. legends win rings. he's a superstar, no doubt about it, but i wanna see him take the next step. it was either kobe or nowitzki that should have won the mvp this season, and i think dirk is about to prove to everybody why he deserved it most.

Its not like that though, because in the end they are partners in a business and Cuban makes a lot of money for the NBA. Its more like David Stern is Vince McMahon and Cuban is Stone Cold Steve Austin, whatever they have to say about each other after the show they both go backstage, have a few laughs and count all their money.

The Mavs are great, and they deserve the credit, but it's crazy to think that San Antonio were this close to beating them... up by three with 21 seconds left, and then a chance to win the series with a last second shot... my goodness. If Duncan would've made that shot, we'd be talking SA repeat right now.

Other than the King's winning a championship, the fact that Stern has to pretend he's glad he's handing Mark Cuban the trophy makes the post game ceremony the ultimate "must-see-tv" for me.

Sterns nightmare is also my nightmare. I don't dislike the Mavs at all, per se. Dirk's cool, as is the rest of the team. They play hard and have a defensive mindset now. It's just the thought of Cuban with a ring, it makes me shudder.
