Stern on rise guys?

Anyone hear David Stern this morning? Thoughts?

Was that really him? They have a guy that regularly impersonates Stern and says funny stuff, but this morning, it sounded serious, but could it really be Stern? Hard to say. If it wasn't, that was a very unfunny bit (which would not be 100% surprising... maybe it is very dry humor)

I didn't get to listen to the rise guys, so what did he say?

My impression was that there'd better be an arena in the works by spring...

Stern was on the Dan Patrick show on Direct TV yesterday so maybe he is into his marketing mode for a bit. The comment about an arena deal is not the first from Stern, most recently last month. If nothing firm by spring look for the spring meeting of NBA owners to broach the issue. With enough votes, the Maloofs might not have a say in staying in Sactown. Would be too bad.

Yeah Stern said that it may not be up to the Maloofs, implying they are maybe being a little ov eroptimistic about an arena in Sacramento. He said the other owners may not let the Kings stay in Sacramento. So I still think the spring deadline could be critical.

I know one thing, other teams hate Arco and think its the worst anywhere. Of course, they have to use the visitors lockerroom, which is apparently awful.

Which brings back the whole "Maloofs say they aren't going to file for relocation this year" thing.. I think they won't have to. But coming out and saying something like that publicly just gave me the heebie jeebies.

I don't think the Maloofs intend to file. What bothered me was Stern saying (a week or so ago) it's not strictly up to the Maloofs. Other owners may force a move.

It's the Board of Governors which is the management body that oversees operations of the NBA which can do it and a lot of other things organized through standing committees. The board made up of NBA owners is there to assist in management of the league in areas of Labor Relations, Expansion, Audit, Finance, Consulting, Rules and Competition, etc. They can vote to force the Maloof's out of Sacramento or even require them to sell the team if they so choose - usually after a recommendation by the NBA commissioner who they also hire and can fire.

Granted all that ^^^, the Board of Governors voting to overthrow the Maloofs or remove the Kings from Sacramento would not happen overnight and it would not happen until/unless every other option had been totally exhausted. It's something that is out there in the darkness, but it's not going to attack the camp before morning.

It could be idle threats from Stern also as I have a couple theories.

One is that it's possible that he didn't want the Maloofs to pledge their allegiance to Sacramento the way he did last week as he wants to keep the pressure on the politicians and possible investors to get things done. By making his latest declaration that the BOG may move the Kings out, he could just be cleaning up the slight mess created by the Maloofs.

The other is that they may be playing "good cop, bad cop". Stern is telling the Maloofs to be the good guys and talking up Sacramento in an effort to drum up interest in the team and helps ticket sale. He then comes in as the "bad cop" and makes his threats to remind everyone that despite having loyal owners, the city still needs a new arena.
