spencer hawes

Huh? It took more minutes for Kevin to become consistent imo.. Adelman didn't play him in his rookie year.. His second year out there he was backup and did awesome. The rest is history.. I remember watchig him his rookie year wondering why he couldn't get more minutes.. Than I realized who was coaching.

What you apparently missed was in year 1 Kevin sucked (shot less than 40%) and we had a bunch of talent ahead of him still trying to accomplish something. In that situation he did not deserve minutes.

And in year 2 he was actually sucking as a backup again -- Kevin may be a bit like Salmons in that regard. He had actually dropped entirely out of the rotation after Ray Allen embarrassed him in a late November/early December meeting. It was Bonzi's injury that first opened him up by giving him a hcance to step in as a starter.

As for Thompson -- our situation has changed. He's still a disaster out there, but that no longer really matters to us. Mikki sucks, but he knows how to play, you can count on what he is going to do. You can build a team and offense with Mikki in mind and he's limited, but he'll help. Thompson on the other hand is just a major distraction wihtout a clue at the moment, and would be frustrating to play with, let alone coach. But the difference is that we are rebuilding now, and getting guys like him out there to accelerate their growth and get them past this mess is part of that deal. Mikki as a starter to settle things I will accept. But moving KT up above him off the bench would just be unacceptable. Biggest x-factor = will Brad and Spencer play together so much that it basically becomes a 3-man rotation of Brad, Mikki and Spencer, with Jason reduced to spot/garbage minutes.

Mr. Brick, it sounds like your trying Not to Lose instead of trying to Win. If I hadn't seen your membership start date, I might have thought you were Theus using a alias.

I have to disagree on one point. If you go with a three man rotation of Miller,Moore,& Hawes, one or more of them might not finish the season. And, garbage time may start right after the half time show.:D

One thing I'm not enthused about from his big night....

0 FT attempts....Thats no good from a big. And it's been that way the entire preseason, Spencer just DOES NOT get to the line enough.

Which tells me he's shooting way to many jumpers, and that explains a lot of the offensive inconsistancy. His big game, he was just hot. SGs with season averages around 44% will every now and then have an over 50% fg night.

I want to see Spencer dominate on the inside. Granted he doesnt quite have the bulk to really capitolize on his post moves just yet...But I dont want to see him get in the bad habit of just hanging around jacking 20 ft shots all game. You're 7 ft tall dude!

Oh well...At least he destroyed everyone on the boards.

As far as the "jumpshot-itis" is concerned, a certain amount of responsibility has to go to the coaching staff for that one because clearly they're at least allowing him to spot up outside as a part of the offense instead of finding position in the paint, if not actively encouraging it.

The ongoing "Spencer from 3" issue an interesting one. I don't mind that he has sweet stroke from the outside, but do agree that his post game needs to be his forte' - which it is not at this point.

The biggest problem that I see is that when he does post-up nobody seems to want to get him the ball. This has been posted on by others here, but in the last 2 games I have noticed myself yelling at the tv "throw-it into Spencer." Anyone else getting frustrated with our perimeter guys on this issue?

So I'm just wondering... did anybody come up with the word "hawesome" yet? Am I late on this discovery?

I'm on it:

and, when it happens:

LOL I found myself yelling at the TV for them to pass him the ball as well. It seems like anytime he gets the ball around the hoop (this season thus far) it's just about a guarenteed score.

Anyway, does Spencer ever miss from 3 pt land? :)

Obviously, Hawesombo is the best 3pt 7ft shooter in the world now!

Theres two ways to go from here imo; the Memo route, or the Sheed route (without the sheed attitude).

Memo: deadly outside shooter, 7 foot "big" man, no interior presence, no blocks, mediocre rebounder. passes through the league as a good servicable center when they are scarce, nothing more.

Sheed: Great 3 point thread, but even more of a force in the paint. Defensive monster, great post defense. Good weak side help. Good blocker in his prime. Defensive team considerations. Fadeaway, hook, turnaround. If not for his mercurial personality and trigger happy technical foul syndrome, had a legitamite case to be one of the all time greats in league history at the PF/C spot.

Now, Hawes has nowhere near the athleticism of Sheed, or the strength (both of which could improve in the offseason, and should), but has the early footwork and intelligence (sheed is VERY smart) to become a methodical post presence. Has shown ability now to get his fair share of blocks with busy hands moreso than jumping ability. He should watch sheed tapes. Take a lot of sheed, add in passing of Miller, and you have yourself an all star-center my friends.

Hah..Seems that way. Although I'm sure there's some softie big out there in the euroleague who's at least comparable :p

I'm still put off by his lack of FT attempts. He needs to gain a bit of muscle and bounce around in the paint more. If he uses his post moves next game he can probably foul Amir Johnson out in the first quarter haha.

Hawes' rebounding and blocks are great though, I'm fairly sure they've surpassed everyone's expectations...And consistant with what he did at the end of last season. He's lookin like an average of 8.5 rebs and 1.5 blks are the low end of his potential and not the high end.

The kids going to be nice backup in the league but why in the world of Hades is Spencer taking 3's?!

He adds a little more bulk to his frame and I bet in a few years he's one of the top 10-15 center in this league, if healthy. He's got the attitude, skills, and puts out ffort every night. He's gonna be pretty good, I think. Much better than "nice backup" material.

because he makes them.

Actually he has missed 1. He should be tarred and feathered for it. :p

SH should be at the basket getting an offensive rebound. Just once in the GP reign i'd like to see a center actually being a center. Maybe we can convince Tank to leave the Bobcats coaching staff and rejoin the Kings?;)

I agree but i'm a spoiled Kings fan. My goals are for a championship team in a few years. I don't see SH as a starter in this league. Well for the Kings anyway.

Well I am sorry, but I dont know what a starting center looks like if Hawes is not one. This kid has both left and right hand, which is rare. he can spot up and pop jumpers. He is active inside and will be a 10 rebound per game player IMO.

Did you see the sky hook in the paint he put up on the warriors? Been a long time since I have seen a REAL SKY HOOK. IN three years I predict Hawes is a 20-10 player. he is very confident right now, and he has as many low post moves as probably any center in the league right now. He doesnt just muscle you over, he make moves to score.

Let him learn his strengths and weaknesses and this kid is legit.

Especially considering he's doing it at 20...

...He's no freak of nature like Howard, or brute like Bynum, so I think it's still a couple seasons until he starts to reach his potential. But what we're seeing already is most encouraging. He's pretty consistant too. I wonder if his frame could reach/handle 250lbs? I think right now he definately gets pushed around a bit down low against some of the bigger guys, and that effects his game. If he gets the size to go down low he'll get the confidence to use some of those wicked post moves (maybe even finish them).

...And to think some of us were so down on him in preseason haha (myself included).

He's already 245 so 5 pounds wouldn't be much.

Really?

They (yahoo) have him listed at 230...Then again Realgm has him at 250.

Well if he is 245....I wonder if his frame can handle 265 :p
