Spencer Hawes Will Not Play Tonight

He will be in a suit and will not dress. Coaches decision reported by Mike Lamb just now on sports 1140 KHTK.

Mike Lamb says he has no idea why and they aren't reporting why either. Just that it is the coaches decision. Drama to ensue for sure.

Maybe its because he couldn't grab a rebound the other night? I have no clue.

Sam Amick just posted this on Facebook:

"Spencer Hawes is inactive tonight, with Kings coach Paul Westphal saying "I saw where he's having a hard time understanding his role. He should understand it tonight." Just guessing here, but pretty sure he's referencing today's story. -http://bit.ly/cVknar - Samick"

Yup, I figured PW wouldn't like that article. But it wasn't just Hawes, it was Sean May as well and even Tyreke Evans, and I'm sure other players spoke off the record. It's not like it's a big surprise for anyone that players will feel lost in a situation like this. PW is a great coach, and I absolutely loved him at the beginning of the season, but I think now would be a good time for him to evaluate himself on how well he's been doing leading the team lately, and come up with some solutions.

Whoa -- I think Westphal's beginngin to go too far now.

Part of the early success of the team was that they felt like the coach had their back and would do anything for him. This Captain Bligh trend that seems to have been getting more and more prominent isn't the way to go.

Westphal may be overreacting a bit, but who knows? I had an emotional reaction to hearing the news, and it felt good. Spencer has the same complaint every time he gets quoted (not enough minutes/his performance is not his fault). Tired of it.

Paul Westphal pretty much just guaranteed that no reporters are going to get any interviews for the rest of the year.

I wonder if that's what he was really aiming at.

Edit: Re-reading the article, it had to be something from the locker room. I just can't see how Hawes' comments as quoted by Amick could merit a benching. He was just saying - after being specifically questioned about it - that inconsistent playing time is difficult, but that's the way it is.

I don't get it, if that's what got him benched.

My thoughts exactly.

I don't think I've ever heard of a player being made inactive because the coach wasn't sure of his role on the team.

There's got to be more going on behind the scenes. Spencer's effort and body language hasn't been good also, and to be honest I would've benched him a long time ago. I wonder if this means he's pretty much done here?

I hope that doesn't affect the guys too much tonight. It's not easy to be focused when your teammate is being made inactive for saying what everybody else was thinking anyway.

wow. that's kind of a shocking quote to me from westphal. :(

Yeah I don't like it. I feel like that's the way I was scolded as a child by my parents. You don't this or that? Well you really won't like it now and this will teach you twice before doing it again. It's almost like he has taken the " this is a young team" too far :/

Ya dude... maybe we can make his value little to nothing in the process. LET'S BLEED MORE TALENT! :o

Yeah it's time for management to remind Paul what his role is. Mentor the young guys, help th through the losing and make sure they are prepared to play competitively. This yanking people around, ocerplaying guys like ime and noc, the mind games with spence, jt, Donte, etc is getting ridiculous.

LOL westphals a jerk.

I dont blame spence.. Everytime he plays good westphals jerks him around like a puppy on a chain. Lately westphal has been more annoying then being trapped in an elevator with urkel.

Westphal is frustrated, I get it, but this was the wrong move. Why Hawes? Why not May and Evans? They both basically agreed with Spencer and said something similar.

Not classy comment but Westphal about Hawes either, by the way. Before Hawes got benched after the Landry trade he had put 3 or so good games together. Not to mention that what Hawes said was true...

Now there is probably more to the story but based solely on the story, why Spencer? Because it's easy to pick on him, you bench Sean May and there is no real affect and if he benches Tyreke he'd litterally be run out of town.

And re-reading the article again what May said was way worse and since we are on the topic Jon Brockman voiced his frustrations evevn worse I think not too long ago on the radio.

Just a bad move by Westphal.

I am definitely on the pessimistic side when it comes to Spencer but he did put togther three or four good games right before his benching.

If that was the thought process Westphal went through then he had me fooled. He seems like a nice enough guy, but what a terrible and morally wrong thing to do to somebody. I'm all about fairness, and this just doesn't seem right.

I tend to agree that Westphal really tweaks the starting lineup too much. Some of it is because some of those big men who were given starting spots just went into very long funks. And many fans here were wishing they would go away to the bench. He's trying to find some guys who will come out and play with some level of consistent effort. These are young players and they tend to float up and down. As far as Spencer, I wouldn't blame any of his play on Westphal. Spencer got his minutes as a starter for a good while and was still wildly inconsistent. How could he not know as a big man that he should be out there to rebound and yet come back with nights where he gets only 1.

Man I couldn't agree more! Maybe Spencer will know his role is to STFU and rebound the ball! He is the LEAST of all the players on the team who should be opening his mouth about playing time... considering what he does with his playing time... One friggin rebound is TOTAL BS!!
