The New York Knicks were in advanced discussions Thursday to acquire Portland Trail Blazers big man Zach Randolph, according to NBA front-office sources.
But such a deal would not have to be completed in conjunction with Thursday night's draft because no draft picks are involved.
The Knicks, sources say, are trying to acquire Randolph in exchange for forward Channing Frye and guard Steve Francis, who has only two seasons left on his contract and has the option to become a free agent after next season. Randolph has four seasons left on his deal worth more than $61 million.
If Francis serves as the big Knicks contract in the deal, Portland would have to add at least one more player to the trade -- guard Dan Dickau is one possibility -- to make the salary-cap math work.
Randolph averaged 23.6 points and 10.1 rebounds in a breakout season in 2006-07 but has faced an uncertain future in Portland since late May, when Portland won the No. 1 overall pick in the draft lottery and the right to select Greg Oden. It's believed that the Blazers, who continue to put a premium on good citizenship after years of turmoil, prefer to jettison Randolph and build around a front line of Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge.
But neither Randolph's troubled off-court past nor the fact that New York already has a low-post presence in Eddy Curry appears to concern Knicks president Isiah Thomas.
If the Blazers agree to send Randolph to the Knicks but prefer Malik Rose to Francis, Rose could be substituted for Francis after July 1 when the final two seasons on Rose's contract -- worth a combined $14.7 million compared to Francis' $34.3 million -- become guaranteed.

Zach Randolph just isn't worth that much. Remember when Francis got traded to New York, all they gave up was an expiring Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza. (so basically nothing)

Those two are max contract guys that aren't worth a damn thing. Randolph is a black hole on offense and doesn't play defense. Not to mention his being a headcase.

Francis is just the same ball-hogging, over-dribbling point guard but now he's lost a step and a lot of athleticism. He's trash too.

Besides, Portland wants to re-create a twin towers kind of offense (Aldridge at the PF spot and Oden at center) so they need to dump Randolph.

Whihc is all fine -- I can see them moving Randolph. Bu tthe above trade woulkd jsut be nutty. Does absolutley nohing for them. Be far ebtter off keeping the 24 and 10 PF than just picking up random guys for the heck of it. Feels very Webber tradeish. If you're Portland and you just dump him without nabbing a young upgrade at either SF or PG, you've failed somehow.

The Francis trade is stupid. I agree, you're just taking a slightly shorter max contract but Francis is just worthless whereas Randolph still has value.

The Malik Rose deal makes more sense if it ends up saving them money. Also, this is Isiah, I can't see why they couldn't get Isiah to throw in a future first round pick.

I think Portland is coming out better on this deal than you guys are giving them credit for. Yes, they are coming out on the worse end as far as talent goes, but what makes this deal for them is the big contract they get that expires in a couple years. They are doing this move looking towards the future.

In a few years when Francis' bloated contract comes off the books, it will free up money that could be spent to add a vet (perhaps a PG if Jack and Rodriguez don't work out) to what should already be a playoff team by then. Or they could save the space it creates and use it going forward to help extend contracts on some of their younger players .

In the meantime, they are set at PF with Aldridge (and now Frye) being able to play next to a defensive stud like Oden.

Francis's deal comes off the books in 2009, when Roy and Aldridge will be looking for extensions. Frye, while somewhat similar to Aldridge, still fits a need. You've got the big guy dominating the paint, with two long PF/C's to play next to him that can also shoot to spread the floor. Not too shabby.

The trade has more to due with portland reforming thier image.

Any chance now with NY filling their frontcourt that we could snag David Lee? His help on the boards would be HUGE next to Hawes.

By making this deal Portland will have about 20-30 mil in cap space for the great FA class of '09 and will be able to offer the max to a free agent without losing any of the core young guys. Most of the roster at that time will still be on rookie contracts.

And whoever said Francis will be bought out is correct. Portlands GM also said there is a back end of this trade that cant be announced for another week or two. The speculation here in Portland is that Miles is going to NY for Malik Rose who cant exercise his player option until this week and thus the delay in announcing it. His contract also runs out in 2 years.

You forget that alot of their young "core guys" will also be receivings/wanting extensions by that time(including Oden which will be a max deal). This will cut significantly into their cap room.

Dude the new GM for the Blazers knows how to rebuild. Even if his team isn't any good, this is what you do. You play your heart out, get lucky, ship all the old guys out, bring in some young, exciting new players and just go at it. We need Petrie to do the same thing like he did when he brought in Webber and the rest of them.

yup portland is doing a great job on stockpiling talent. one thing i would like petrie to do is use his 2nd round picks better..

i'm really shocked that petrie does not trade the 1st/2nd round picks for future 1st/2nd rd picks during that championship run when we really didn't need new players. he doesn't select foreign players w/ the 2nd round picks to allow them to develop. san antonio does a great job of this.. where they will pick a foreign player and let them develop overseas. what this does forthem is they will either 1) get really good where we could use them 2) be good enough to reel in some more 2nd round picks for their rights. we used 2 2nd rd picks to get songaila. it's like putting it in the bank and getting some kind of return on it instead of selecting some players who he will never use.. IE ricky minard..

No one else is even the least bit curious/intimidated to see a starting front court of Oden and Randolph next year? Bring in a player like Oden and you might be surprised how guys can suddenly turn their careers around while playing next to him...

Well, the trade has already gone down. But I think the issue was more about Randolph's character, or lack thereof, thena the potential frontline pairing. they did not want him poisoning what could be some very sweet waters. And with Aldridge lurking around, and now Frye -- that frontline is just so incredbnly long and atheltic now. Every one of them. No more stubby guy, albeit a very talented one. Its 7'1" shotblocker, 7'0" shotblocker 6'11" shotblocker 6'11"...well, pansy (Frye), but still.... :p Then they still have guys like Outlaw at SF, who might be long enough to pay PF. They are huge, and so young, and just did not want anything to mess it up. I have frontline envy. ;)
