Some NBA Rule Changes For This Year

Looks like there are three pretty important rule changes for this year.

1) Second Coaches Challenge: If the first challenge is successful, the team's timeout is retained and a second challenge is awarded - but using the second challenge costs a timeout whether successful or unsuccessful

2) Egregious flops can now be called as technical fouls (non-unsportsmanlike, do not count towards ejection)

3) The league will not be calling "rip-through" fouls unless the ballhandler is making a play towards the basket


I think that overall, #1 and #3 hurt us a decent amount last year (and man, rip-through fouls irritate the heck out of me) so I have nothing but positive vibes for these changes.

Coach's challenges might have a bit of tactical rather than symbolic value.

My intuition was that we lost a significant amount of challenges last year; but I think I'll double-check that.

My intuition was that we lost a significant amount of challenges last year; but I think I'll double-check that.

I think sometimes challenges may be used just as an eff it might as well try kind of thing because I feel you preserve it until crucial moments but then nothing warrants its use but you don't want to waste it either.

any rule changes is good news, I remain hopeful that one day the charge will be eliminated and players have more leeway to go up vertically to challenge shots at the rim

I'm not sure if I like #2 because of how subjective it can be. I have a feeling they won't call very many of them but I think the best way to get rid of flopping is to just stop incentivizing it. If they're on the floor, they're not playing offense or defense. Eventually they'll stop purposely putting themselves on the floor because it'll take them out of the play and it will have nothing but a negative impact on their team.
