So why did NO give up on Marcus Thornton?

This guy is a baller. Thornton is probably our best story so far this year and in the off-season. He's averaging 20 ppg, 4.2 reb, and 2.2 steals (probably the most impressive stat so far). He's doing it on excellent shooting -- 47% FG, 41% 3PT. He brings it every night and seems to be a stand up guy. He is happy to play for Sacramento.

His rookie year with NO was impressive -- 14.5 ppg on good shooting. The 2nd year his minutes diminished and he was traded to us at the deadline.

What happened in New Orleans??

I read on the NO forums that he was in Monty Williams doghouse because he wouldn't play defense or something like that.

I dunno. I just remember once Chris Paul was injured, Thornton and Collison were shooting the lights out. He was a beast for me on my fantasy team.

Major red flags. It's why he was a second rounder. I heard he ran over Peja with his car over a fantasy football betting pool thing.

their loss. Thornton is keeping us going right now. I vote he and jimmer rep the 3 point shoot out come all star weekend. Marcus is definetly worthy as it stands

I believe that NO changed head coaches, and with that came limited minutes for Thornton. Apparently Williams didn't like Thorntons effort on defense. Don't know the whole story, but I know I really liked Thornton in college. The only knock on him coming out of college was his lack of height at the SG position. He probably would have gone higher if he were 2 inches taller.

hes quickly becoming my favourite king. Reminds me of Eric Gordon without the super-crazy dunks.
I think he'll be our leading scorer as long as hes here and healthy.

Not sure why the Hornets gave him up.. but i guess they did get Landry from us, so the trade wasnt too unbalanced. But i think we got the better end of the deal, cuz Marcus is still 2-3 years untill hes in his prime. He can still tap into alot of potential. I'm hoping on the defensive end, his steals have impressed me so far, it looks like hes really putting forth a concentrated effort on that end of the floor.

First off, they tried using him as a combo guard, playing some point. Bad idea.

Second, MT wasn't getting consistent minutes, and was in the coaches doghouse for apparently his ability to grasp the offense (which was essentially wait until CP hit you on the wing) and his consistency on defense.

And lastly, the hornets traded pieces they knew would develop (Collison and Thornton) in order to get guys that would help them win now while Paul was there. What they ended up doing was killing their future because Paul was leaving anyway and now they have few prospects.

I don't know but I'm glad they did because he's looking the best trade the Kings have made since Williams/Bibby or Richmond/Webber.

Heard CP3 didn't like the success that Thornton was having while he was injured. I heard CP3 wants things his way and found a way to get Marcus into the dog house and eventually traded.

I've thought about this quite a bit recently. After the attempted Lakers/CP3 deal the answer should be obvious: the Hornets front office is terrible, largely incompetent, and doesn't understand the value of young and talented players.

Thornton has been great! Don't get me wrong, but here's my theory on potential reasons he may have been discarded:

I did see him grumbling when yanked the other night for Jimmer (don't necessarily blame him). The Kings had gone on a run against the Hornets and were up 14 with about 4:30 left in the third quarter. For the first time in awhile the team looked to be playing well and forced the opponent into a timeout.

Thornton was shaking his head and muttering (unhappy college or high school style to a teammate). I saw the Kings give up 8 straight after the timeout and wondered myself why the substitution.

Thornton is fiery and has a bit of a temper. I can definitely see the potential of him getting down on his teammates (especially when they are only C-B level players like the Kings roster is loaded with right now). He's a tough player, but I worry how long his fuse will last without solid play from teammates.
