I'm not a big fan of this article in general. To wit:
Point 1: "Kings should get a point guard because they don't have one, how about J.J. Barea?"
Except we've got three PGs - Evans, Fredette, and Thomas. I'm not a fan of acquiring the Barea flavor of the month, especially if we bring back Thornton. No room at the inn.
Point 2: "Kings have 5 players at the 2, not counting Thornton, thin it out"
Again, the misclassification of players (Evans, Fredette, Salmons and Honeycutt) has led the writer to an erroneous conclusion. Without Thornton, we are weak at the 2, because Tyreke will have to play alongside Jimmer a lot. Yes, we've got Garcia, who is probably better as a 2 than a 3, but Salmons appears to be the starting 3, and Honeycutt is unlikely to be ready (and probably a 3). This is where we actually ARE thin.
Point 3: "Decide whether JT or Hickson starts at the 4"
Reasonable point, but not a major issue. I think it will be Hickson, but if this is the #3 issue, then we've got little to worry about. Sheesh. Not to mention that if we bring back Dally or nab Chandler/Nene/etc. then there's a decent chance Cousins will start at the 4.
Point 4: "Get lots of crappy free agents instead of one good free agent, and try again next year"
Umm, this is GOOD advice? We have money to spend, so we ought to get something good now (if we can) rather than deliberately mire ourselves in mediocrity. "DON'T EVEN TRY to get a guy like Nene or Chandler" is just bad advice.
Point 5: "Bring Marcus Thornton back"
Well, duh. Could have moved this one up a little higher on the list, like maybe up to #1 or #2? But no, it's more important to decide if JT or JJ is the starter!
Point 6: "Add some crappy veterans on expiring contracts"
This is really just point 4 all over again. Seriously, we know we need to fill out the roster to 13 or 14 guys. And sure, if we can't strike it rich in free agency this year, let's try again next time around. Cap space next year would be great. I need a column to tell me this?
So let's see - one obvious, decent point with incorrect priority (#5), one obvious, useless point with incorrect priority (#3), two points that indicate roster cluelessness (#1, #2), and two basically identical points that are bad advice as plan A (#4, #6). Yep, great article.
