Can't take back salary at this point so if they're looking to us to salary dump, they're looking in the wrong place.
Certainly the thought is that Houston is looking to salary dump both Lin and Asik in order to make a run at Carmelo in free agency. We can't directly help in that salary dump, but perhaps we could facilitate.
Here's what I'm thinking: One of the best salary-dump markets around this offseason is going to be Philly. They've got a metric butt-ton of cap space (we're talking over $30M), five second round draft picks to throw away, and an extremely young and thin core (basically the team is MCW, Thaddeus Young, Nerlens Noel, and the #3 and #10 picks, whoever they are). They've got to spend a bunch of money this summer just to get up to the salary floor, but I doubt that given their current situation they're going to be seeing any big-name talents come their way this year.
For Philly, grabbing Asik in a salary dump makes a bit of sense. But at the same time, he's making about $6M more than his cap number, which means that if the Sixers pick up Asik, they'll be burning $6M that doesn't even go towards meeting the salary floor. In the end I doubt they want to do that. But instead of spending $14M for an $8M-cap player, if they wanted to take on JT, they could spend $6M for a $6M-cap player. To my eye, JT makes a good deal of sense for Philly - not only is he a hometown kid, but he is a low-starter caliber player who can play both post positions, makes about the MLE, and is locked up for either two or three years. Not a bad guy to put next to Nerlens Noel (and perhaps Joel Embiid) as the future big men in Philly grow up - and a decent though not great salary value.
So:
Houston sends Asik, receives second round draft pick(s) from Philly
Sacramento sends JT, receives Asik (and in a pipe dream, second round draft pick from Philly)
Philly sends second round draft picks, receives JT
This trade wouldn't work until after July 1st, but it could be agreed on and the draft picks made for the other teams. The biggest complication is that unless Houston is just dead-set on dumping Asik no matter what, they would probably not want to pull the trigger until they had two things sewn up: 1) a taker for Lin as well, and 2) a contract ready to sign with Carmelo. Obviously that couldn't be predicted until after free agency started so the draft picks bit is a bit iffy. But as a Sacramento fan, I do that trade.
