Sign and trade talks

Per multiple sources, Sacramento Kings' front office is split on moving forward with Isaiah Thomas at PG, has engaged in prelim trade talks.-- Jake Fischer twitter

Not if trade picks are involved, and someone could potentially be making a pick for Sacramento.

You can't do any sign and trade with a restricted free agent now. the player would have to agree to go to the other team first. why would the kings be engaged in S&T talks, if they have no idea if IT would agree to go there? Makes no sense, this is a B.S. report.

the agent can send feelers to teams that are interested. i think it would be the prudent thing to do for the FO and agent to discuss how much they are willing to give him. tyreke's value determined prior to him signing the contract w/ NO. they knew they could get him if they paid x amount of dollars and we wouldn't match.

All of tyreke's sign and trade talk began after the free agency period began July 1st. Why would a team tell another team how much they are willing to pay to sign away a free agent or keep their own free agent?

GMs are keeping their price they are willing to spend on a free agent a secret from other GMs until the time it is right to reveal their cards, which won't happen until July 1st, when the free agency period begins.

I think its a load of bulldust. Firstly, IT would have to agree to be traded to the team. We cannot just sign him and trade to the team we feel gives us the best deal. IT has a choice where he goes to a degree. He can sign any offer sheet he feels like and its up to us to decide whether we want to keep him or not!

Indeed, this is one of those things where it sounds like whoever wrote it doesn't truly understand NBA procedural rules and may not know the league well.

That we could be actively shopping around on IT's behalf I could see. Or his agent. But sign and trade's aren't going to be up to us until IT choose a destination.

As for moving this, I am flummoxed. In truth the main one in the main forum is into stuff that should be in this forum, but its so well established over there I am reluctant to move it this way.

It sounds like we're getting robbed..... A little bit.
Have you seen Bledsoe play?

This guy is so intense on both ends of the floor, a good facilitator, bull strong, and actually some say he is like Lebron of point guards.

Of course, some of us thought of Tyreke as becoming the Lebron of PGs too on his first two years here.;)

I totally agree with you. Bledsoe and Cousins are close friends, and would play great together. This feeler trade just seems like we're slighted, a lil bit. Can't we get #50 pick at least.

We would be lucky is the Suns even wanna do a sign and trade with Bledsoe leg alone them adding a pick. Bledsoe is way better than IT when you factor in his menacing defense.

With Anthony now opting out and wanting to either go to Houston or Chicago, do you think we can get in on some of that and offer either of those teams a player of a pick for one of theirs?

From Houston I would love to take a look at Omer Asik (which has been discussed here already) and Jordan Hamilton as well. I think the front office likes Lin (wouldn't be surprised if we get him) and there could be a 3rd team involved if they are looking to give up Parsons. Maybe a 3 team deal with PHX that would get us Bledsoe?

From Chicago it's Taj all the way. Rose will be back next year so they might look at giving up Hinrich (only as a backup here), Teague (still like him even though he hasn't done much). Have a feeling though they will only part ways with Boozer

Can't take back salary at this point so if they're looking to us to salary dump, they're looking in the wrong place.

Certainly the thought is that Houston is looking to salary dump both Lin and Asik in order to make a run at Carmelo in free agency. We can't directly help in that salary dump, but perhaps we could facilitate.

Here's what I'm thinking: One of the best salary-dump markets around this offseason is going to be Philly. They've got a metric butt-ton of cap space (we're talking over $30M), five second round draft picks to throw away, and an extremely young and thin core (basically the team is MCW, Thaddeus Young, Nerlens Noel, and the #3 and #10 picks, whoever they are). They've got to spend a bunch of money this summer just to get up to the salary floor, but I doubt that given their current situation they're going to be seeing any big-name talents come their way this year.

For Philly, grabbing Asik in a salary dump makes a bit of sense. But at the same time, he's making about $6M more than his cap number, which means that if the Sixers pick up Asik, they'll be burning $6M that doesn't even go towards meeting the salary floor. In the end I doubt they want to do that. But instead of spending $14M for an $8M-cap player, if they wanted to take on JT, they could spend $6M for a $6M-cap player. To my eye, JT makes a good deal of sense for Philly - not only is he a hometown kid, but he is a low-starter caliber player who can play both post positions, makes about the MLE, and is locked up for either two or three years. Not a bad guy to put next to Nerlens Noel (and perhaps Joel Embiid) as the future big men in Philly grow up - and a decent though not great salary value.

So:
Houston sends Asik, receives second round draft pick(s) from Philly
Sacramento sends JT, receives Asik (and in a pipe dream, second round draft pick from Philly)
Philly sends second round draft picks, receives JT

This trade wouldn't work until after July 1st, but it could be agreed on and the draft picks made for the other teams. The biggest complication is that unless Houston is just dead-set on dumping Asik no matter what, they would probably not want to pull the trigger until they had two things sewn up: 1) a taker for Lin as well, and 2) a contract ready to sign with Carmelo. Obviously that couldn't be predicted until after free agency started so the draft picks bit is a bit iffy. But as a Sacramento fan, I do that trade.
