Should we try to pry Varejao from Cleveland?

rainmaker

Hall of Famer
There is more and more talk of Daly leaving, although this thread isn't about that. I'm looking at possible trade partners, and teams which have needs, where we have a surplus, And bingo, Cle tops the list.

They just drafted T Thompson, who's a pf. They have Hickson, who also is a pf. They traded for Erden last year, who they're high on as a center. They also have Varejao, at pf. This team has 3 pf's, one of which they are very high on in Hickson, and another they have very high hopes for, in Thompson. There were rumors they were shopping Varejao up until the draft.

Now, they also don't have a single sf on their roster. They have jamison, who's more of a tweener, and a 35 yr old tweener at that. So, we will need another big, even if Daly resigns. But if he doesn't Varejao is one of the few players who could compliment Cousins very well on defense, might be available, but isn't a FA.

Should we try to move Omri for Varejao and cap space, giving Cle roughly 6M more in cap space to use?

I like this idea Rainmaker, good job. Varejao would be nice to pair up with Cousins. What would be EVEN better would be us resigning Dally AND trading Omri for Varejao!

Yeah, that would be better. I'm also thinking about the mentality of our FO. They pulled the trigger on the Salmons trade inpart because going after a vet sf in free agency would be risky, and a risk they didn't want to take. Well, its' the same risk with Sammy, if we lose him, we're competing against a very short list of possible replacements who fit well with Cousins. My guess is they'll look hard at trades, and I really do think Varejao might be had.

Yup. If Dalembert doesnt work out, and assuming Varajao is healthy, he's the first guy I go after VIA trade.

Varejao actually can't fill Daly's role. The lane would be open again.

As an aside has there actually been more and more talk fo Daly leaving? Or has there just been the latest crusade from our own dear crusading Sac Bee columnist?

No one is going be able to replace Dalembert as a goalie. Varajao isnt the kind of help defender Dalembert is, but he can defend his own man very well. I'd feel far more confortable with Varajao on the opposing teams best scoring big than Cousins, who will get in massive foul trouble, or Thompson.

I like Varajaos game. He's young, but he has alot of big game playoff experience .. He's extremely active and deffinetly plays with a chip on his shoulder. And If Dally walks, and Casspi for Varajao is on the table .. we could do much worse.

Who would you then go for, realisticly, if Daly walks, and we strike out in free agency? That's what I'm thinking about.

DeAndre Jordan.. He's already proven he can clog the lane. He could go up against opponents PFs just like Dally could.

I still wanted this guy a couple years ago in the draft, and he was a STEAL in the 2nd round.

Definitely. He's 28, seems to get a little better every season, and has tons of playoff experience. His contract goes through 2014 which means no one year rental worries. I can't think of a better consolation prize for not resigning Dalembert and in some ways I'd actually rather have him than Dalembert if it came down to choosing one or the other.

Gary, what if we strike out in free agency, or LA matches any offer to Jordan? That's the scenario I'm talking about. By no means is Varejeo the #1 replacement for Daly.

Two big ifs, but at that point it may come time to burn another asset. I assume that was the scenario Ailene was talking about when she said we'd have $18-20mil to spend and would be hotly pursuing a "major frontcourt talent". I run out of answers fairly quickly on who that might be.

donald sterling is a cheap ***

If the offer is too high, he will make him walk

I think there's actually a decent chance of that happening. He'll have to resign Gordon in a year, and that will be costly, and then Griffin a couple years after that, which is a max contract. Also still has Kaman at 12M, until he trades him. Even in that scenario, they'll have to take back pretty similar salary.

Nene?

Just trying to think of someone that matches what Dally does.. Jordan came to mind. He was amazing at times when playing next to Griffin.

Possible.

Again the defense takes a huge hit though, and where do you get the balls to go around with 5 scorers in one lineup? Its insanity. You need Doug Christies and Scot polards and fundamentally uinselfish types liek Valde to make offensive lineups work. Can't jsut make everybody a scorer and have them all fight over the ball.

AV would be a decent substitute if Dalembert walks, as long as we didn't have to give up much more than just the cap space. Sounds like the team might try to make a big splash for a Gasol or Nene, though.

I think AV's defense is underrated. Probably easier to obtain than Jordan or Chandler (although does he look for $ over wins now that he's won it all?)

Good player but does not replace what we lose with Dally. If Dally works we need a goalie that can guard Cs and PFs.

Chandler is highly unlikely to leave Dallas. If Dally walks I would be going at DeAndre Jordan 100 miles an hour and offering him a bug front loaded contract.

I know that Clippers are under the cap as well but I would give Jordan BIG contract and since its Sterling we are talking about, there is a fair chance that he wouldn't match.
