Shaq traded... (title updated)

#3
This would probably be one of the worst trades in NBA history. It would serve to crush the Suns championship hopes as a soon to be 36 year old O'Neal couldn't stand a chance to keep up with Nash and Amare, and it would only improve Miami by default.

I agree with tradepeja. What the hell would an up tempo team do with a center who doesn't even move as well as Greg Ostertag?? On top of that Shaq is signed through 2009/2010 for 20mil/yr!!!! Who the heck would want that? Oh yah, he also misses about half the season every year because he is an out of shape s.o.b... Any team that trades for Shaq is asking to suck.

But if the Suns were to make this move, sources tell Stein that improving their oft-questioned chemistry in the locker room would be a primary motivation.
The Suns don't NEED O'Neal which is precisely why this trade might work. There's more at work here than what we see on the court.

Well folks...

You know my sources are usually as strong as oak, I just got a call confirming that the deal is finalized and should be announced in the next day or so.

The Diesel is headed out of Miami...
Won't provide a link. It's from a Heat board, and he has called many trades and free agent signings before. Unless something drastic tomorrow, Shaq is finished in Miami.

I understand Miami wanting to trade Shaq. They absolutely should. What I don't understand is Phoenix wanting to pick him up. Yes Amare is probably more of a PF anyway, yes Phoenix wants to win now, yes Marion has already asked to be traded, yes Shaq has won championships before, but isn't this the same team selling their draft picks every year for pennies on the dollar because they don't want to take on any more salary? And they're going to add the most overpaid player in the league? A player who can't hit a free throw not to mention an open three? I guess they've been looking for a frontline center to compete against Duncan, and the new Bynum/Gasol tandem looks scary on paper, but I wouldn't want to be the one to break up that magic chemistry in Phoenix. Maybe it gives them what they've been missing, but it looks more likely to me that taking away the one thing that makes them unique (speed and offensive firepower) causes the whole careful balance to fall apart. Be careful what you wish for.

...Or maybe Steve Kerr is brilliant and Shaq puts another borderline contender over the top. I'm having trouble seeing it, but I suppose it's possible.

I agree, they dont need shaq.

But they do need:
- Size
- Rebounding
- Defense

Shaq gives them:
- Size
* Rebounding
* Defense

Shaq gives the size for sure but he doesnt make sense with the style, scheme and way they play. They need Defense and rebounding, but if anybody has seen shaq play the pick n roll, (in his hay day) he wasnt very good. Phil also got on him constantly to rebound.

Overall they dont really need his offense, its on the other side of the ball thet they would need shaq to contribute. I see some upside but I see some downside aswell. I would have to see shaq and the suns in action to make some definitive conclusions.

Uhh, what championship hopes? The Suns still can't defeat the Spurs and now they are going to get creamed by the Lakers as well. I'm not saying this is a good trade, but they had no shot at the title anyway.

If I was the Suns - I would do the deal because for them - it is now or never considering that Nash is kinda old too. They can't win it the way they are now. They don't have much to lose and soon they will have a huge expiring contract anyways

the Suns came almost as close as the Kings did to beating the Lakers. It was about as close as it gets. The Suns are a championship contender w/o Shaq.

You're missing my point. I'll try and clarify: The Suns don't NEED Shaquille O'Neal on the court in the way some teams make bad or questionable trades to fill desperate needs. What they might need is an end to the rumored locker room chemistry problems. Maybe they made the best deal possible that doesn't make any other team in the West stronger. Sending Marion to the Heat doesn't really hurt Phoenix as far as competitors are concerned.

i was thinking the same thing when i heard about the trade. they really don't need shaq and all he has to do is really eat up space in the paint. its not like the suns are lacking scoring power.

The Shaquille O'Neal trade to the Phoenix Suns is not a rumor....

The Suns will part ways with Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks and move to a conventional style with O'Neal playing the 5.
The Suns have major concerns about chemistry issues on the team and feel a trade for O'Neal would alleviate those issues, plus give them the post defender they lack....

My sources tell me that O'Neal desperately wants to come to Phoenix and will be rejuvenated to have a chance to win again and that the Suns do not have any concerns over his injured hip....

The Suns will not expect O'Neal to dominate as he did in his prime, in fact his minutes will probably hover around 25 per game as they try to keep him fresh for the playoffs and a potential matchup against Tim Duncan and the Spurs.
This trade makes sense for the Suns. If this quote is too big, delete. This guy is not necessarily credible, but he lays out the argument why this trade works for the Suns. I was not a believer at first, but if the Suns are ready to change their style of play, this can make the difference.

Read the whole article, it is not too long.

I said this a few years ago since my roommate is a suns fan, "the suns are the kings of the 5 years ago. Arguably the best team in the league but there is always that one other team and they come up short each year." Veeery interesting trade but we shall see how it plays out.

I don't really care. Actually don't think he's a good fit in Phoenix and think the Lakers would win whether he's there or not...especially when Bynum returns. They've won 2 of 3 already...and that's with Kwame!! ;)

Wow. Just wow.

It makes me wonder if Steve Kerr and Mike D'Antoni are on the same page. They'll certainly have to re-think their offensive system.

Heat fans must be happy. They won a championship, and now they can immediately rebuild with a high lottery pick and mondo cap space in the off-season.

From a SUNS fan's perspective
Bingo. High risk,high reward.
We're hoping it's SHAQ + Miami 1st for MARION/Marcus BANKS + Atlanta 1st(SUNS rights)
If this is just Shaq for Marion/Banks, i'm dissappointed. The SUNS fans are split right down the middle i'd say...understandably.
I was hoping for Artest.
If this goes down, we'll slip in the standings i think but if we're healthy going into the post-season i believe this helps us tremendously on the defensive end.
Otherwise, we weren't going to get any stops against the the likes of the Lakers,Spurs, Hornets, Jazz etc...
