Scoreboard Watch/Playoff Standings Watch 2025 Edition

I think you're setting up a false dichotomy here that the choices are a full-on tank or some roster balancing. I don't want to see a complete tear down and 5 years of intentional losing for ping pong balls, I just want to see a basketball team on the floor that has a chance of winning a playoff series. And acknowledging the reality of how the NBA is structured, I don't think we ever get there by buying veteran free agents or shuffling the supporting cast around a deeply flawed core.

Four months ago this team was struggling with inconsistency but there was still hope that they could right the ship for three reasons: (1) The team defensive rating was hovering around 12th, so even with all of the problems there was still a chance that they could tighten up the mistakes and win a playoff series. (2) We'd already seen mostly this same core win 3 games in the playoffs in 2023 and blow out the Warriors in a play-in game in 2024. (3) The obvious rotation holes at backup C and backup SF were fixable with a couple of deadline trades (which ironically enough, Monte did make only it was too late for them to matter at that point).

As things stand currently: (1) This team is now ranked 24th in defensive rating and really that number is even lower for this roster if you consider that's a full-season average. (2) Fox averaged 27.4 pts, 5.4 rebs, 7.7 ast, and 2.1 stls in the playoffs so those recent playoff wins are no longer relevant without him on the roster. (3) The bench rotation holes have been addressed but now we need to replace 2 positions in the starting lineup. With De'Aaron Fox and Mike Brown gone I'd argue that we actually have a problem at 3 starting positions. We're now staring right in the face of the "can you win with Sabonis as your best player" problem and as much as I like the guy, I have to admit that I think the answer to that question is "no". He's not enough of a defensive presence to anchor a lineup and not gifted enough as an offensive weapon to justify trying to play guys out of position to compensate for his limitations.

So what do we do next? If we can identify the players who will help us to achieve the goal (become a team that is capable of winning a playoff series again) and trade everyone else for assets that will help us to build around those players, we won't need to waste any time trying to lose games on purpose. There's two ways this could go in my view. There's what I would like to see happen, just rip the band aid off now and ship out Zach, Malik, Deebo, and Domas on draft day or right after it. Tell Keegan Murray congratulations, you're the face of the franchise and start drafting for size, defense, playmaking and shooting to fill the PG, PF, and C spots around Keon Ellis at SG and Keegan Murray at SF. And there's what probably will happen instead which is a long and slow process of trying to rearrange the deck chairs on a sinking ship as Monte or whoever takes his place wastes multiple assets and years on a lost cause.

I don't think wanting the team to clean house and start building toward a better future is the same thing as endorsing a tank. I want the team to build around Keon and Keegan at this point (and Devin Carter and Isaac Jones in the rotation) because those are the guys we have who are playing both ends of the floor. Get everyone else out of the way who is limiting their effectiveness and surround them with players who share their "play all 94 feet" mentality. I think sticking with this Monk/Deebo/LaVine/Sabonis core for even one more season is more likely to result in continued fan disengagement and continued franchise front-office turmoil. That's when we're staring at a tank situation because we will have burned every available asset trying to keep a bad team afloat.
Essentially, that is a tear down. Maybe leave a few studs and part of a foundation, but the electrical, plumbing, drywall, flooring and roof needs to be replaced. And don't delay, because time is money and this piece of crap is sitting there with the rain pouring through its dilapidated roof and the rot and mold are settling in. This team hasn't hit bottom yet. I want to repeat: THIS TEAM HAS NOT HIT BOTTOM YET. It's passed the apex of it's life cycle and is on the downward trajectory, but it hasn't hit a bottom on which to propel itself upward. Until ownership and management man-up and decide to pull the plug it will continue down a painfully slow path of decay and death until finally the choice will have been made for them. The wind will have blown everything down and only the termites will be left.

It may be semantics but I actually think this team would have a better chance to win with Keon/Keegan and a young defensive supporting cast around them than continuing to play the squad we're watching now. Tanking teams usually want to get worse but my goals would be only to get younger and better on defense. I'm agnostic about future lotto picks at this point. I think we can improve via trade and/or by signing journeyman vets if we ignore the All Star segment of the market and target system players instead. Aim for a "Heat Culture" approach in other words. We clearly cannot compete economically with the arms race that is the Western Conference anyway so why not push the development clock back a couple years?

The Suns lost to Milwaukee, which means that a win over Washington would put Sacramento two games clear of Phoenix with six remaining. Not that I am counting on anything...you never know with this team. But if Dallas loses to Atlanta, that would put the Kings back in ninth place, barely.

Eighth place is now all but out of reach.

The other way around. Keegan and Keon as the young defensive supporting cast around players to be named in the future. Neither one has proven they can get their own shot at a moments notice or that they can be the focal points of a very good offense.

I feel like this franchise has spent the last 20 years trying to build a team around players who can get their own shot and then maybe thinking about defense as a second or even third priority. It just hasn't worked. Tank until you get a superstar 25ppg guy and then build from there hasn't worked.

But specifically as regards Keegan Murray, the whole reason to get DeRozan in here from my point of view was so that Keegan could watch him create his own shot for a year and then 'osmose' some of those moves into his own game. Has it worked? The only way to find out is to put him in a situation where he has to carry the load. He is a 4th overall pick -- why are we assuming he can't be a Jayson Tatum level player just because he gets his points in a different way? Nobody thought Steph was an MVP caliber player as a diminutive jumpshooter and he proved us all wrong.

So bottom line, I haven't moved off of my opinion yet that Keegan will be "that guy" if we just give him an opportunity. And the beauty of having your leading scorer also be your best defender is that you don't have to cover for him on defense nor does he have to be the one scoring 30 points every night to be effective. I'd settle for 20ppg and all league defense as the main piece in the lineup. The guy has ideal size, has proven he can shoot, obviously takes pride in his defense, plays level-headed smart basketball, and is just the right type of petty that I think he'll thrive in a leadership role.

The Suns, with a grueling April schedule, lost to the Knicks in New York tonight. That leaves them a full three games behind the Kings in the standings, with only four left to play for both teams. It is imperative for the Kings to win at least one of their last four.

The Mavericks only have three games left. At this point, either Dallas or Sacramento could end up with the ninth seed and homecourt advantage for the play-in game.

Suns are done. Home games against Warriors, OKC, Spurs. Final game @Kings. They have to win out and the Kings lose 4 in a row.

They actually have a tiny bit of leeway with us. They have 43 losses right now. If the Kings lose out, we end up with 44 losses and the Suns would have the tiebreaker, so they could drop one non-Kings game. Or alternatively, we could win one non-Suns game if they win out. If we beat the Suns there is no scenario where we do not get either #9 or #10 regardless of what else happens.

The Suns are only done if:

The KINGS win 2 of their final 4.
The Suns lose 2 of their final 4.
The KINGS beat PHX in the final game (regardless of the outcomes of all other games)

The KINGS cannot afford to end the season in a tie with PHX by losing the final game of the season. If that happens, the Suns own the tiebreaker based upon better divisional record.

However, the KINGS superior conference record could come into play if SAC, DAL, and PHX finish in a 3-way tie.

I just realized that the last game of the season, next Sunday at home against Phoenix, will be at 12:30 PT. I can only hope it does not matter at that point.
I got a free ticket to that game, so I hope it's a good one! Not sure where we're sitting or anything but I don't really care, either. :)

People who not just yap about NBA, changing their narrative three times a day, but people who know and think about NBA took a notice about our last two wins. No need to get into the stats and and who was not available to play. I'll just be prompt: this is the final version of Kings of 25' season. Monk went to bench (my choice would be DDR, but when MB asked him for a favor, DDR refused. Let it be.)
Sooooo... Zach had to be integrated.
Domas was not available due to non-personal reasons for a month plus. I added plus because even if a player suits up after the the injury(ies), it takes couple games at least to get into game shape. Domas injuries were not pretty. Pulled hammy, nasty ankle sprain... Anyway, now Domas is back to normal. He can activate turbo mode like he did in 7 games winning streak, but it's not granted. He already gives all every game. Though I love seeing Domas now as a scoring menace very much. He was like that with Pacers. Domas was even up a notch with Pacers as a scorer. Zach is smiling and can score from anywhere on the floor while being one of the fastest, athletic SGs in the league.
DDR adjusted his game too. He gets easier scoring opportunities because before mentioned Zach and Domas are just too good on offense in completely different roles.
Keegan, Keon, Monk, LaRavia, JV and others fit very well. Add DC's good management of the game and suddenly Kings play a very good bball game.
I had 2 good options for this Kings year. Finish 11th or beat OKC. 11th place is not available anymore - let's up the ante :)

Beat the Nuggets tomorrow to push them to the 7/8 slot. Beat the Mavs in the first play in game. Beat the Nuggets or Grizzlies in the second playin game. Wait for all the other teams ahead of us in the standing to randomly fire their coaches. Win a ring.
IF we can beat the Mavs, I’d certainly be a lot more confident taking on Memphis. I think we’ll need LaRavia and Murray though

My preference (if we beat Dallas) would be to play the Clippers. We nearly beat them on the road a few weeks ago, I think they are a good matchup for us, and it is the easiest road trip, coming off a home game in Sacramento two days before.

If not the Clippers, then I see the Grizzlies, Wolves, and Nuggets as nearly equal options, but would probably rank in that order of preference. They are all distant road trips (or have unique challenges like Denver), but I think we matchup well with Memphis, decently with the Wolves, and the Nuggets may be in some disarray.

Warriors would be my last choice. It would be sweet to knock them out, especially since they are talking title, but that would be the hardest game, despite the easiest travel.
