Scenario #1: Do You Do It?

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Orlando is said to be looking for a Carmelo style package (multiple young pieces, picks) for Dwight.

If they would accept this offer (and let's not get into details of matching salaries or whatnot -- assume a third team is utilized as necessary, but this would be the cost to us) would you do it:

Tyreke
Jimmer
this year's #1 if we are in lottery
Hickson
future first

for

Dwight Howard

leaving:

C-Howard
PF-Cousins
SF-Cisco
SG-Thornton
PG- Thomas

6th Thompson
7th Salmons
8th Hayes
9th Greene
10th Outlaw
11th Whiteside
12th Honeycutt

*with one of our salaries, perhaps Hayes, Salmons, or Cisco having to be moved in the deal to make the financial match

Nope. Cannot justify mortgaging the team's future on a guy who is going to sign somewhere else (regardless of bird rights) at the end of the season. I would consider it if he had a few years left on his deal, though. People say, "The Kings could pay him more than any other team", but can they? Texas and Florida do not have income tax... he could probably sign with Dallas for less money and take more money home.

Absolutely. Assuming DH would sign long term as part of the deal, we would have the most dominant front line in the league for the next decade. We would have a +10 in rebounding every game and average 70 points in the paint per game. The only way to score on us in the paint would be fast breaks. Still need a perimeter defender to prevent getting 3s rained on us. But that would be one of the best half court teams ever.

Wasn't there a new rule in the CBA that you can't make a trade contingent on a contract extension? So if that's the case and you only get a 1 year, then no, definitely not.

Nope. I'm assuming if D12 can't be convinced to go to Chi, he sure as hell won't sign an extension to play on a burial ground off I-80.

But, I have been thinking about Orl. Brother Hedo has been playing well, and they're trying to dump him anyway possible. Now, he's signed for 20M over the next 2 yrs I think. So, why not send JJ, someone like that so it's almost a salary dump for them, which allows Orl to attempt to add another player around D12 this deadline to convince him to stay, or free's up 10M in cap space so if they try to talk him into staying they can argue they have more cap room to go after someone to pair with him. Or is they just end up losing him for nothing, hedo is gone as well freeing up a lot of cap space to start a rebuild.

Orl really might keep him through the deadline and attempt to convince him to stay. Getting rid of Hedo is a huge step. And we don't have to give up that much. They get JJ cheaply for a little frontcourt help, and he expires.

I think Orl might strongly consider that, as they're looking for anyone to take Hedo.

No. And it's not just the long-term issue that worries me. What I'd be worried about here overall would be whether Howard and Cousins can coexist down low. Cousins is not only a rebounder but he'll be an inside-outside scoring threat (as opposed to an inside-with-a-good-pass scoring threat like Howard). Howard brings rebounding and defense that would be nice to have next to Cousins, but I think that PF-type rebounding and defense (think Ibaka-type, non-scorer) is a better fit and would be less expensive. A complementary front-court player for Cousins can be found on the free agent market once we're on the way to the playoffs. We don't need to sacrifice Reke to get a guy who will cost a lot, may not fit super well with Cousins, and could leave in a year.

Won't happen under these terms. Magic would definitely want Cousins instead of Tyreke at this point. Cousins will end up to be a better player than Howard if he works hard. So no deal.

No.

Dwight wants to be THE man. Cousins WILL be THE man.

Without having time to look where that would leave us salary wise for the future, assuming Howard signs an extension, it would be intriguing. My worry would be how Howard would fit next to Cousins. Howard isn't a shrinking violet. He likes, and wants to be the man. I think Cousins has similar aspirations. So that could be a problem. So let me put it this way. If for some reason, we get lucky and get the first pick in the draft, my answer is no. If we end up at 6 or beyond, then I'm inclined to say yes.

Of course, only if Howard agree's to an extension, and we have the future cap room to resign Cousins, and aquire other necessary pieces to fill in the team with complimentry players.

Or we could simply suck and win the lottery and wind up with Davis and ultimately have a similar thing with all of our players in tact.

Can't imagine Howard coming to a small market team (Sacto is ranked #20) for any reason or any amount of money. He wants to continue to be a marque player in a big market on a team that can see a championship in1-3 years. Once Petrie-Smart rework the bench to fit Smarts style and the team chemistry, Kings will be in playoffs for a long run at the top.

How the hell could you pass this up if we inked Dwight too an extension? Him and Cuz would 1. quite possibly the greatest frontcourt duo since McHale/Parish 2. a Marketing dream for Sacramento and 3. would instantly improve our defense ten-fold.

I would wait until after the draft because as long as we have a shot at getting Davis, no matter how remote, I would want to see the results. It is likely Davis will evolve into a player better than Howard and would cost us nothing. It's an interesting trade to think about and the draft is interesting also.

Trade is not possible.

Can't trade this years and any future pick would have to be set as 2 years after the Cavs get our pick.

Where's all this Davis hype coming from? Did I miss him putting up a 20 block game or something?

The guys going to be good, but to say he's going to be better than Howard already? Huh?

It's coming from watching him over and over.

No.

For sure and knowing the very passive nature of our GM, Howard will not be enticed into staying with the Kings. I don't want to go back into that early phase of rebuilding again.

I'd do it in a nanosecond.
