I like Harper's footwork and energy on defense; I'm not in love with the fact that she's spent most of her time on the court so far with a rookie point guard on offense. She needs someone who's going to get her better looks.

A jump ball? So it's okay to knock down a player, fall on her and then grab the ball? I didn't know that...

Still lovin' Franklin's tenacity.

Now see, that's where Franklin's going to be most effective this year: when she's on the court with the jumpshooters. Put her out there with Lawson, Powell, Smith and Brunson, and watch the fun... Just don't put her, Allen and Harper on the court at the same time. I like Harper's offensive potential, but I'd be more comfortable with Penicheiro making those passes in the short term.

71-62 Monarchs

I always preach heart and hustle, energy and effort for the Kings. Well, they need to watch the Monarchs play. That's fundamental basketball out there.

I am totally impressed with what I'm seeing tonight. This is a team that will make some noise.

For those not watching, they just showed a very dejected-looking DeMya Walker in the stands. I wish her a complete recovery...but I think the Monarchs did the right thing.

As we seem to mention every year around here, this team is much more potent offensively when Penicheiro is aggressive. She doesn't even necessarily have to hit shots; she needs to make the other team defend her. Whenever Penicheiro keeps the defense honest, it opens up those passing lanes, and makes her so much more effective.

So, good first game; here's to hoping that this is finally the year we stop waiting on her to do it for a whole season.

way to go. nice to see Kim Smith make some good contributions. I thought Harper looked slow sometimes but gotta love her intensity and defense. Aqua looked out of control sometimes.

I think this team will be better than most believe.

Great game! I thought our rookies had an impressive showing, especially Harper. Aqua will settle down offensively, and she had a fine defensive showing. She should hold her head high tonight--she and Ticha did a fantastic job defensively against Hammon, holding her to 7 of 19 I believe. Aqua clearly unnerved Becky, I loved every minute of it.

Ticha--great game. Six points, 7 assists, 5 boards, 3 steals, 4-4 from the line, only 1 TO, and a blocked shot!!! I would not trade you for ANY other point guard in the league. Period.

Now go show em this stuff and more on Tuesday in Seattle!

DeMya--my heart broke watching you in the stands. Healing wishes to you sweet girl.

I really liked when our back court was Aqua and Kara. Seems like it could be pretty potent on offense.

I think Aqua will become pretty dynamic when she realizes that nobody can guard her, she's just too quick. It seems like when she gets in the paint she's too afraid that her shot will get blocked though.

I agree with you about Aqua. She needs to reward herself for working hard to get into the paint and at least put up a shot. Of course there was some sloppy play, but this is there first game all playing together!

wow. I am really impressed at this "new" team. Nice to see Adrian and Kim contribute offensively. I think Harper will have no problem filling in our center void. How bout some of those blocks her and Bekkah had? loving it! I'm also diggin Aqua. Her hustle reminds me of Lawson. I didn't expect her to be so quick, now I only wish she'd put up more shots.

I also like our underdog status, b/c i believe this team is going to be a nice surprise this season. I'm really excited about this younger, faster team.

oh and poor, poor Demya. :( I really hope the Monarchs pick her back up next season! anyone know if that is the plan? I know she still has a lot of game in her!

About DeMya: They said last night again that she's staying in Sacramento for her rehab. While I think the Monarchs will definitely keep an eye on her, I do have to wonder if she's just too accident-prone to invest any more money in, especially with the team bringing in some youth with a LOT of potential. But that's just my personal opinion and not anything based on rumors or anything else...

Thoughts from last night

1. I was for sure Coach Jenny was going to tighten up the rotation because of the influx of young inexperienced players. I found that was not the case. She is going to play Harper, Franklin, Smith and the like. And particularly Harper and Franklin, they will play even when Robinson and Newon gets back.

2. Slow or not slow, I thought Harper was very effective.

3. I can't wait for Nicole to get acclimated. She is my favorite Monarch. She can get whatever she wants, even when only being in camp for a few days. She was very aggressive.

4. Defensive rebounding is still going to be an issue. 16 offensive rebounds for the Silver Stars along with a number of second chance points.

5. I was very impressed with the offensive tempo, especially when Franklin was in the game. She presses the issue.

6. TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS.... 23 turns was way too much.

Overall, good game, not great. A win is a win, on to Seattle.

While 23 turnovers IS a lot, 23 turnovers with three rookies garnering significant minutes AND it being the first game of the season mitigates that to some extent, IMHO.

What impressed me was that the Silver Stars weren't able to really capitalize on those turnovers as the Monarchs were hustling on both ends of the court.

Haven't been online since Friday, so I'm late. I wne to the game and had the usual great time. :D

Stars shooting was terrible, but our turnovers and their offensive rebounding/second chance points kept them in it. I do think it's important to note that Hammon may not have shot weel to to the same jet lag issues as Nicole. Why does Young always seem to play really well against us?

Aqua is fast, but some passes were completely uncatchable. I like her hustle and tenacity, tho.

It was nice to see Kim doing something out there. She looks more confident. I think Harper will work out nicely as she learns the system and gains experience.
