Sasha Watch 2022-2023

Yeah that took me a minute to realize the EUROPEAN championship was last week(or whatever) and this is the GREEK championship. It's like having a pacific division championship game after the League championship. Do the players really care at that point?

Seems like winning your local league would be part of qualifying for the all euro championship. But I suppose its like their football preimer league, where they qualified based on last year's record(or whatever the formula is), not the current years peformance.

Not really....In basketball as in Football (soccer to Americans) there is 3 competitions National league /National cup and Euroleague...still less than 82 games in total...In Football you qualify for next season European competition depended of this season results...in BB Euroleague there are 12 permanent clubs 2 more coming from Euro cup finalists and 4 WC making 18 team Euroleague.

From Sasha interviews as I understand it....He is more than happy to come to Sacramento.... if the price is right...at the moment he's saying...Show me the money.
"I feel very good when specialists and coaches say nice words [about me] but I know it's a business and it's all about how, what, and when. We agreed that it would be fairest to finish the EuroLeague season and then talk. We'll see if they have a specific offer," Vezenkov continued. "I'm ready for new challenges but, as I've said before, Athens and Olympiacos are my home and I feel great. For me, the most important thing is what's best for my future."

FWIW on sports AM 1140 yesterday, they said that teams can't negotiate with draft picks (even previous years draft picks) until after the draft on June 22nd. If so, we are not going to hear any news about Sasha signing until after the draft.

IMHO, I'm expecting some good news about Sasha soon after June 22nd.

Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee takes a closer look at the Kings’ potential next steps with EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov, whose NBA rights are controlled by Sacramento. According to Anderson, the team’s offer for the 27-year-old will likely start in the neighborhood of $3-4MM. That would be roughly equivalent to the first-year salary for a player drafted between Nos. 15-21 in 2023

I have to admit I still don't understand the way that European basketball is structured. In my stateside mind the season should be over once they lost in the Euroleague championship.
I think it's just simply not a singular, cohesive system like we have in the US. There wasn't just one league that scaled up across a unified region. You had pro leagues developing at different rates, controlled by different groups, some more government aligned/national team, some more private enterprise based.

Basically - you have a replication of continental European politics into the game of basketball across the European continent. It's a wonder they even have a unified championship lol.

Cattles and Romney, I think that’s the hosts names we’re saying Sasha wants to clear$4-6 mill per year meaning his contract needed to be in the $10-11 per year range.

Is this because of taxes or some payment or? Anyhow, the last set of numbers is borderline too much unless the team is getting the option year 2 or 3. Seems a lot for a guy who hasn’t played a minute in the NBA

It's an absolute crap show in the Balkans teams are threatening to not play in the Final of the ABA because they have been waiting for close to a month while the other semi just finished today.

I don't know.... is there really much difference if he gets $3M per year vs. $6M? I get that every penny can count in navigating issues associated with the salary cap, but if monte, brown and the rest of management believes he's anything more than a 10th man that barely plays salaries in this range is going to be a value by current NBA standards. And I do get that you don't necessarily think he'll translate to the NBA.... and I'd wager a lot that you have a more informed opinion of his game than I do. I'm just thinking the team seems committed to the thinking that he will be a valuable piece.

But they were saying that’s “what he wanted to clear is $4-6 mill meaning his contract had to be in the $10-12 range”. I guess I didn’t really understand what they were saying other than his asking price was going to be in the $10-12 range which seems like a lot for someone that is an unknown in the NBA.

I highly doubt Sasha is going to squabble over take home pay and if he does that's a concern IMO. If he's coming over, he's coming over to show his stuff and get one of those FAT contracts after this one. That's how the NBA works and him getting anything close to that kind of a windfall in Europe is literally impossible.

I disagree. If the team has a role for him - they will pay him like an important piece. He’s too established overseas for a prove it contract. Either the Kings believe he’s a 20 minute per night player or they don’t. And $10 mil for a 20 minute/night player is pretty standard.

The $$$ matter for showing that the team will give you an actual chance to prove yourself.

It's kind of funny how - if memory serves - the fan discussion revolving around the size of a potential Vezenkov contract started out with basically the full MLE on the table, somehow we managed to haggle ourselves down into the idea that Sasha would totally take the BAE and that would be generous on our part, and now it seems like he's being perceived as greedy if he wants the MLE after all. As a European MVP!

We've seen him play. We know that despite his defensive deficiencies he's an offensive cog - it would not be out of line to say he could be a factor in bumping us up over 120 ppg next year if he joins. If we want him, if we plan to use him...pay the man what he deserves.

The man has to know what players in his particular spot got though. This isn't Luka. Luka was drafted and Luka didn't get 10 million a year on a gamble contract to start. While I have no doubts personally that Sasha will do well if used right, it is what it is. He gets no more than what former MVP Euro players like Bjelica got IMO. From last seasons negotiations to now things have changed. What was once an iffy situation for him might have become a you better not look a gift horse in the mouth situation. If there were EVER a team with the potential to give Sasha the world, it's this one. Fit wise the universe is speaking, and it's speaking directly to Sasha.

you think he deserves the full MLE? Thats a couple million more than a better player in Monk. I wouldn’t lose sleep over that deal but I have hard time being sure he deserves it.

Well, Luka's rookie deal was 4/$32M (so not far from an MLE deal now, and pretty close to an MLE deal then), and of course the CBA determines the value of that contract, it's not a negotiated free agent deal.
