I thought there can only be 12 that can be played? While the other 3 available spots are for the DL. Sampson being the 12th man (he can't go to the DL), and then Price goes down Albur. for however long/times.

Here's the way I understood the new rules regarding minimum rosters and the NBDL.

(1) Every team has to have 12 players on its active roster and at least one player on its inactive roster. I believe teams can have two or possibly three inactive players.

(2) Any player with less than two years experience in the league can be placed on the inactive roster and assigned to the NBDL.

Here are articles from NBA.com regarding the new CBA and these issues. There are still a few things that are vague about them though.

Roster Size and Developmental League

If I'm understanding this correctly, the Kings could keep both
Schenscher and Price on the inactive roster and send them to the NBDL. OR they could put Sampson and Schenscher on the inactive roster, but only send Luke to become an Albuquerque Thunderbird.[font=Arial, Helvetica] Sampson would have to stay with the Kings as he has more than two seasons of experience.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's about the size of things. The one question I have is whether the Maloofs are willing to spend the minimum to keep an extra big body on hand. Otherwise, it comes down to Sampson vs Luke for the last slot, and I assume Jamal would win that battle.

Looks like I was beaten to the punch.

Anyway, it seems we came to the same conclusion. I think the Kings have their 13 guys. Now I guess it comes down to whether the team thinks enough of Big Luke to keep him around/stash him on the Thunderbirds.

As an aside, I was looking for a picture of the Thunderbirds uniforms but I couldn't find one. I guess they might not have them completed yet, with games not starting until mid November.

Anyway, I'll make my point without having seen their uniforms. I'll bet they are much better than the Kings alternates. I'd be shocked if they weren't.

Yep, agreed.

I've been able to catch a few Preseason games, and I've really liked what I've seen from Price in his limited minutes. While his shot is shaky, I love his defensive approach to the game and I think he could be a very good playmaker. Still as the 3rd string PG and don't think you could go wrong with him. I'm definately loving this team already, you can see that they trying to become better defensively, eventhough they have a long way to go. I'm not worried about the offense.

Luke may have impressed them quite a bit in practice. I find it odd that he wouldn't be released today, so close to the season and all. I guess time will tell.

You forgot Skinner -- we're still at 14.

Sampson, Price and Luke would be the bubble babies. But have to beleive that Sampson has shown enough, both in preseason and the last few years, to make it. And Price is PG #3. So that kind of leaves Luke in an odd spot. Wonder if the coaching staff is just taking a long look at him to decide whether they want to try to talk the Maloofs into paying him + sending him down to the NBDL?
Thats my take on it too.

I always felt Price had the #3 PG stitched up. Its very unusual for a GM to offer an undrafted kid a 2 year deal unless he really likes what he sees. I never thought Flores would knock Price off for the spot. Even if you look back over the pre-season, Price is getting more minutes and more games than Flores. The writing is on the wall.

I do agree with Schenscher bit. I reckon we like the kid as a development player and GP and RA might be trying to convince Maloofs not to be stingy bastards and offer Luke a minimum contract as the development player :P

I think thats likely going to happen since 7'2 players with decent skills are hard to find. I suspect we will go in with 14 players and have Ronnie and Luke as development players and Simpson as our 12th man.

Not in my eyes...I hope they still end up giving the last spot to Luke.

From what I've seen (although not much to go on here), Luke still needs to develop as a player, sending him to the D League would be a great chance for him to improve his game, instead of him staying glued to the pine. Price looks like he can contribute right off the bat (esp with defense). However, he'll probably be playing garbage time, but after watching him, I have some confidence he can become in and be solid for us if injury strikes (as it usually does).

I got the impression from the Bee article today that RA will not send Ronnie to the DL unless both Mike and Jason are 100% healthy and they are on a long road game trip with no practices. RA felt he needed the 13th guy to make sure they have enough bodies for practices.

But If the Maloofs do spend 400k min sal + 400k luxury tax for Luke, he would be the 14th and prob spend the whole season in DL unless we have a lot of injuries to the Bigs. RA would prob put SAR or Corliss at center before he would play Luke. Again if injuries to Bigs was screwing up Practices he might be brought back for that reason.

If Luke is not good enough for 3rd string Center, paying 800k for possibility he would make team as a 3rd string that would not get played next year would not be worth it.

If GP and RA think that one year in DL will advance him enough to make it as a 2nd string center, then opens up poss of making team next year as 3rd string center (real injury insur) or even as a 2nd string (Skinner gone due a trade).

Im sure RA and GP are waiting til last min so they can make the best evaluation possible before going to Maloofs so Maloofs can make the $800k decision.

Sampson will get the 12th spot (maybe he already does), more size and big-man abilities is more important. Plus he's got NBA experience of 38 games and a nice 23-game run with the Bobcats ;) .
