San Jose going after the Kings

Did it worry me? Nope, not a bit. Do I think some people are trying to find a way to read something negative into the Maloofs pretty CLEAR statement and rebuttal AGAIN to those same old rumors? Yep.
What I meant by it is that people get REALLY specific when they are lying about something.. Almost like trying to make themselves believe their lie.

Like someone saying they never cheated on their wife when going to work.. I was always at work, and never cheated on her when I was supposed to be at work. Nuh uh, no way...

But in fact the guy cheated on his wife but never at work, so in essence he is telling the truth because he never cheated when he was supposed to be at work..

So the Maloofs coming out and saying they aren't filing this year makes me think they will in the future.. I just have a way of reading people I guess.. I easily sense deception lol.

That's what I was thinking as well but by giving it another year, it at least shows that they are giving the city a chance. If they really wanted to relocate, it would make sense to just up and leave now so at least there's hope.

IF there isn't a new arena at some point, any body and every body knows the team will be moved. That's an absolute no brainer.

The Maloofs said they talked to San Jose and said they have talked to many cities and/or potential buyers. Because everyone knows they are having serious problems getting an NBA acceptable arena. That makes Sacramento a target for every city that wants to snag a pro team. So of course, cities and potential owners are calling them all the time. That's an absolute no brainer, too.

What would be shocking would be if nobody was trying to pry the Kings out of Sacramento.

Its also obvious that, so far, the Maloofs have said no. They've been trying for 10 years to get a new arena. That's a pretty long time of being committed to Sacramento and I believe they still are, at this point.

But if any body thinks that they won't move the team at some point, without a new arena, then they are living in a fantasy.

100% correct! We do not want to lose our Kings!

I wish there was some way that everyone can just come together and just get it done :(

Sacramento has a dearth of corporate sponsors, if that's what you are talking about. This is not only a smaller market city, but in California the Bay Area and LA/Orange County is where corporations locate headquarters, not Sacramento.

Sacramento is basically a government town. Its the biggest employer Believe it or not, Maloof Sports and Entertainment is one of the biggest employers in Sacramento.

Unfortunately, that's one of the reasons its been so hard to get financing. That and California's screwy budget laws, local and State, which make getting most things done here infinitely more difficult than in most other States.

However, Cal Expo was selected as a possibility bu the NBA, because they are 1) a State entity, and 2) have bonding authority to raise money and 3) they got that bonding authority from the State legislature so they could rebuild a new Cal Expo and actually a new arena would fit nicely into that rebuild. Also, it would not involve tax increases, nor do they have to get any approvals from the city or county.

They have concept drawings and a proposed financial plan. They solicited responses from several big developers nationwide as to whether they thought the plan was financially feasible. Basically, the response they received was positive. It is a financially feasible plan and financing, just not in the current economy. That's why I was glad to hear the Maloofs say they were committed to Sacramento had if that meant waiting for an economic turn-around, then they'd wait.

Did you hear Gary Gerould salivating over the Thunder's rehabbed arena during the game tonight? It was built in 2001, I think he said, and the voters approved a bond issue to make upgrades to the arena, which was done over the summer. The G Man just kept talking about what a beautiful job they did on the upgrades and what a marvelous facility it was. I wanted to cry. It's less than 10 years old, gets the voters to approve a bond in a snap and the work is done.

Now we know Arco can't be upgraded, because it was built with such a poor design and a foundation that won't support the kind of expansion needed. But, dang, OK had a relatively new arena that's been completely re-done and upgraded. Kansas City just built a brand spanking new arena and they don't have any team. The city built it, by themselves, because they wanted bigtime NCAA tournaments back. Sacto just sits and twiddles their thumbs and is ready to balme it all on the Maloofs, if the team leaves.

Questions for those who keep up with the ins and outs of this situation:

Are we having issues attracting sponsors to help pay for the stadium?
Sponsors don't pay for the arena. Sponsors help support the team through multi year contracts AFTER the arena gets built. For instance, Carl's Jr. may agree to pay the Kings $1 million a year for 5 years in return for the Kings letting them put a sign at courtside that is visible when the games are televised as well as a 30 second blip on the matrix board twice per quarter or something like that.

The problem the Kings have is getting the tax payers to front the majority of the money needed for construction of the arena. The Maloofs don't want to pay for it themselves and neither do the taxpayers. That's why we're in this situation. We hope that a developer would be willing to build it at Cal Expo but that's looking less and less likely by the day although I still hold out hope that someone like Alex Spanos comes through and foots the bill.
