Sacramento Kings Team Needs

I just don't see this as an example that has proven it's worth. Ginobili was obviously a star example. However, so was Michael Redd and I don't see people saying we need to always draft great shooters in the second round. The Spurs did a great job with Ginobili and I will give them credit for their scouting on him, but that still does not make it a great draft strategy.

Bricklayer among others have pointed out Parker as another example. And yes he was a very good late first round pick. However, he was still first round pick and this comment was about the second round, particularly late second round picks where the Spurs and us (until recently) have been. Add to that that in a draft today Parker would not last nearly as long (as foriegn players are more valued) and he really isn't a relavent example.

Long story short - the Spurs did a great job on Ginobili; however, this does not mean that always drafting foriegn players in the second round is a utilizable strategy. Even in the last decade, good to great players like Mobley, Redd, etc. have also been drafted there. This is more of a question of great scouting than a blanket strategy.
I guess what I am trying to say is that teams do not scout europe as heavily as Spurs. Sure all teams scout Europe and see the cream of the crop there so to speak but I think the Spurs are scouting leagues that are not scouted by other teams. Those leagues are not strong leagues but Spurs keep an eye on them and pick players that they thing could develop into something in a few years time.

Thats the sort of strategy that I am talking about. Not neccesarily picking up stars in the 2nd round but more so picking up raw kids and leaving them overseas to develop into good players who can come over and play a role for them.

You mention Redd and Mobley as 2nd round picks but what we are trying to say is that Spurs seems to get a number of good players in the 2nd round where as other teams (Bucks and Houston in Redd/Mobley example) seem to fluke it by doing it rarely rather than on regular or semi-regular basis.

Spurs use 2nd round to take a punt, pick a project and leave him overseas to develop. Sometime it busts, generally it returns good players and once in a while it will get you a star.

Look, if your point is that the Kings should take a "Moneyball" approach and take a flier on players whose skills are underappreciated by other teams than I completely agree, this has already been covered in another topic. However, while you credit other team's gems (Redd and Mobley) as a fluke, I do not see you presenting any empiracle evidence of the Spurs being more successful in the second round other than naming Ginobili who also could be called a fluke. Now if there are other foriegn secound round picks the Spurs have succeded with other than Manu that I am forgetting than I am completely open to this. However, thus far you have one example of success (while many foriegners have been drafted in the second round) which ultimatley proves just as flukey as other team's success.
