Why Sacramento Does This: This deal would eliminate an off the court cancer in Ron Artest, and secure the Kings two expiring contracts, and the most improved player last year. This would solve the backup point guard situation for this season with Dickau and Ellis to help out Bibby and Douby.
Making this move expedites the rebuilding process by splitting up Bibby and Artest, and opening up cap space to sign Kevin Martin to a contract extension as well. If Monta Ellis doesn't continue to improve, he is an expiring contract as well, and if he remains on pace to shine, then the Kings would have the Bird rights to resign him, and some space to extend his contract while remaining under the luxury tax.
Why Sacramento Doesn't Do This: This would help out a division rival and would set the team defense back a long way. Although Ron Artest is a major head case, he is very talented, and by far the best defender the Kings have had on their roster since Doug "My favorite" Christie suited it up and bashed with Rick Fox. When rebuilding you have to break some eggs, and this would probably take the Kings out of playoff contention for next year as it is more talent bleeding. Also, this trade doesn't move other key salary clogs in Kenny Thomas, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Brad Miller, or Mike Bibby while removing our most versatile on the court leader, defender, and hustle player. I guess that is how low Ron Artest's trade stock has fallen
.
Why Golden State Does This: Golden State has been shopping Monta Ellis all off season, as he came up short in the playoffs. This move adds a perfect player to Don Nelson's run and gun as David Lee is an exceptional rebounder, proficient low post scorer, and is adept at playing big in an up tempo offense. This move trades small for big, and gives the Warriors three future studs down low for Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson to set up in Biedrens, Brandon Wright, and David Lee (Not to mention Al Harrington). This move also opens more playing time for summer league standout Marco Belinelli.
Why Golden State Doesn't Do This: This move ships out a capable guard who worked well with Don Nelson's system. Having already shipped out Jason Richardson for Brandon Wright this would further weaken a back court captained by the injury plagued Baron Davis. Furthermore, Monta Ellis proved he could play in the NBA all season, while his replacement, Marco Belinelli is entering his rookie season and is unproven at the NBA level. Does Nelson's run and gun system work with one less shooter?
Why New York Does This: New York is in such luxury tax hell, that they don't mind giving up expiring contracts to buy more talent. Ron Artest is the most talented player in this trade, and Isiah has been salavating to add him to a SF depleted Knicks team which lacks defensive intensity and perimeter passing. The addition of Ron Artest, along with Zach Randolph, enables the Knicks to contend for the Atlantic Division, against the likes of Boston, New Jersey, and Toronto. The loss of David Lee's rebounding is overshadowed by the gain of Ron Artest's defensive intensity and the homecoming of another New York son.
Why New York Doesn't Do This: Putting Ron Artest, Zach Randolph, Stephon Marbury, and Nate Robinson together is a recipe for trouble (or prison if things go especially bad). Winning in the NBA is dependent on skill, but it is also dependent on chemistry, and too many trouble makers can cause an already tenuous Knicks situation to spontaneously combust. Isiah should be very careful mixing flawed character pieces together, as the possibility for success, could be matched by the possibility of historical off the court calamity.
