RUMOR: Kidd headed to Mavs

Hollinger has some interesting points about this trade....

Concluding with:

In the final analysis, then, it seems Dallas gave up quite a bit to make what is, even with the most rose-colored glasses, a marginal upgrade at the point. It's possible it could work, but my issue with this deal is that the risk and reward seem out of line. Much like Phoenix with the Shaq deal, I can't help but wonder if the Mavs are fixated on what Kidd was 18 months ago rather than what he'll be over the next 18 months.

Let me repeat that I'm not nearly not as down on this trade as I am on Phoenix's. But on balance, I think it puts Dallas farther from a title rather than closer.

Dallas will never win a title with Dirk as their 'star' player. He will never come through for his team in the clutch when it matters most. My opinion. I'm not a fan of Dirk. Never was.

 What is your definition of "matters most"? Didn't he come through against the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, including in game 7? Is there something that matters more than an elimination game?

I don't understand why people say "so and so will never do that" when that person already has done it.

Nowitzki is no longer the "star" of the Mavericks...

I wonder how this will impact the All-Star game? And whose jersey will Kidd wear for the Skills Challenge?

What does Dallas do in two years when Jason Kidd can't move and he retires? I think it's a marginal upgrade for the rest of this season and the playoffs, and maybe next year, but after that, the Mavs are going to be in bad shape because of this trade. I don't even think this trade makes them good enough to win deep in the playoffs this season.

And that moved one of their best young guys - although I'm not that big a Devin Harris fan - in the process.

Oh in 2006 right? That was the semi-finals but regardless: Miami 4 Dallas 2. Miami wins title. Enough said.

2007: 8th seed Warriors eliminate Mavs with the BEST record in the NBA. What a champion.

You said never. What you meant was "sometimes". Sometimes he comes through, sometimes he doesn't.

If you don't like him, fine. If you don't have confidence that he will come through in the future, fine. It just doesn't make sense to me to say he will never come through for his team when he has done it already doesn't make sense to me. That's all I'm trying to say.

Wow. What has happened GMs this year? We need to phone up the Cavs and see if they'll do a Ron and Kenny for LeBron trade ;)

Seriously, Mavs starting team has got better, but they've lost tons of depth and two draft picks! What are they thinking?

I'm not sure about that one, DD. Stackhouse may not have been a superstar, but he was a pain in the bum for a lot of contenders out here. He was pretty clutch for them to boot. I like Kidd, but 2 starters for him is steep at that pricetag and age. His shooting is turrible and Dogboy only succeeded in upping their tempo against teams (SA, LA, PHX) that are going to slow it down and work the paint anyway.

I respect your opinion and you are right. I cant say never.

I don't even like Nowitzki, but I'll stand up for him here: the Mavericks may have lost those games, but you can't put that all on Dirk. You're talking about a guy who's record when facing playoff elimination is 8-6, with averages of 28.3pts and 12.3reb, which would be a full three points and two rebounds above his overall career playoff averages. And, if you discount last year's stinker against Golden State, he's averaging almost 30ppg (29.8) for his career when facing elimination. Yeah, he didn't lead Mavericks to the promised land, and you can even make the case that he probably can't, but you can't say that he didn't show up...

He also wasn't a starter; dime dropper said the starting team has gotten better.

So, if this trade does happen in the next day or so, does J-Kidd still start for the East as a member of the New Jersey Nets in the All-Star game?

But...if it works, the Mavs just got to the big show. Mark Cuban is tired of not being in the NBA finals and it's pretty obvious he thinks this might solve the problem.

And sometimes the future just isn't worth waiting for any longer.

George blocks Kidd trade!

Mavs forward George blocks trade of Kidd to Mavs

With the New Jersey Nets poised to complete a blockbuster deal to send Jason Kidd back to Dallas on Wednesday night, Mavericks reserve forward Devean George has unexpectedly exercised his right to block the trade, according to NBA front-office sources. Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the teams verbally agreed to the deal earlier Wednesday and were preparing to submit the trade for league approval when George informed the Mavericks that he wouldn't consent to being included in the deal, which is his right based on a rare provision in his one-year contract.

why dont they just pull a Lakers and sign someone to a 1 yrd deal equaling George's contract and then trade him to the Nets.

I don't see this stopping the trade. And i seriously find it hilarious how many of you go on about how Kidd will be in "2 years" or in "18 months." What do you think a switch just gets flipped and he goes from All-star averaging near triple double to old man who can't run up and down 94 ft?

Look up Karl Malone. John Stockton. Kareem. Even Michael Jordan. They played and played extremely well into their late 30s and early 40s. Sure they werent their old selves, but with a Dirk and Josh Howard in their prime, Kidd won't have to be his 25 year old self.

This is a good trade, plain and simple. They werent going to win anything with Devin Harris and a 2-guard manning their point in the playoffs.

Also, your facts on the trade are wrong, I believe. From what I read, Dallas gets 2 first rounders and the $3 million.

Those are really bad comparisons.

None of those players underwent microfracture surgery when they were in their 30s. None of them relied primarily on quickness and speed to be effective. All of them could fall back on their jumpshot / go-to move regardless of a lack of athleticism.

Kidd is not an old man yet, but his NBA career is quickly reaching it's end. And he easily had two or three years knocked off of it with his knee injuries.

While the Mavs might be a better playoff team this year, and maybe next, because of this trade, I find it highly unlikely that Jason Kidd continues to play at a high enough level past 2010 to justify this trade as being a good one, especially when they gave up youth and draft picks to get him.

How do you give Devean F. George a trade-block clause if you're the Dallas Mavericks?

And Supes, I gotta disagree with you: Kidd is the kind of PG that doesn't rely on athleticism as much as his peers, so he can probably play at his current level for another 4-5 years.

I wonder if Cuban has fired Devean George yet. And I too have to wonder how he got the trade approval clause. What were they thinking?

HAHAHA....Devean George blocking a trade HAHAHAHAHA...oh that's just great.

I thought Kobe was the only one with a no trade clause. Who else has it out there if Devean George has it?
