Rudy Gay

I would do it in a heartbeat. younger and more versatile than Joe Johnson...I am not sold on Cisco being the guy at SG anyway....kind of a come off the bench/ Doug Christie type to me....solid D and descent O, but too inconsistent.....Gay would take pressure off Reke

Uh, he's nothing like Joe Johnson.

obviously you did not read my post clearly. I said he is more versatile than Joe Johnson, not similar to Joe Johnson. I know they are completly different players.

The question is not whether you want him or not. The question is how much are you willing to pay for him. He's a second tier player. So to my mind he's certainly not worth a max contract.

The next question is does he address any of our immediate needs, besides just being a sexy signing. He's a SF. I would think that the one thing we have a surplus of, is SF's. But if we were to sign him, then what do we do with Casspi, Greene, Nocioni, and Cisco.

I think the money would be better spent on either another center or PF/C. Or, another player thats capable of playing both the point and the shooting guard position.

Ummmm, NO. Why would we pay for a SF? He is NOT a 2-guard. We have two promising young SFs already on the roster. We need to use our capspace for a defensive big or an actual 2. WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER 3 MAN.

I like him, but hes not worth a max deal, and when all these teams realize most of the players are going to resign with there current team, some GM is going to overpay for these second tier players like Gay and Lee. I hope its not us.

Whoever signs Gay, will make the same mistake as Philly with Iggy. Money aside, he's a really nice player that you would want. When you pay the guy 45-50 million over 5 years - it's a huge mistake.

If you want to contend, Gay should be your 3rd best player. Maybe a 2nd best player on a team like the 02 Kings, where there is a glut of team talent. Either way, you cannot afford to pay him 9-10 million a year under the cap.

And that's the old cap. With all the teams looking at him, Gay will sucker somebody into giving him a 5 year 50 million dollar deal this summer. Under the next CBA, you could sign the same player for a four year 25 million dollar deal and only be on the hook for 1/2 of the last two years.

The Kings just took 3 years getting out of cap hell. If Petrie signs Lee or Gay, he puts us right back in for no good reason.

Personally, I think we are closer to contention than what most people think. I'd give it one, maybe two years before we are a 50 win team again. Tyreke really has made me a believer, and with the shadow of the Arena talks looming, the Kings' front office may need to make moves sooner rather than later. This offseason could be highly important, seeing as how we will have capspace in addition to a top 10 pick.

The hardest part of the process is taken care of. Tyreke is the cornerstone, now its time to build around him. I had my doubts before if Reke could be the primary distributor on a championship contender, but these last few games we have really trusted the ball to Reke's hands and he has performed marvelously. You can easily envision Reke in a Lebron type of role as the primary playmaker on a squad where everyone is involved and the offense just hums. You just have to watch the last two games to see where a Reke-run offense can take us.

The two most important needs in my opinion are the need for a consistent second star and an interior defender. The Landry acquisition has given us a very consistent third man because Landry is able to get his 16 points very efficiently without dominating the ball too much. However, we usually have run that second star by committee. Sometimes Beno steps up, and when he does we usually win. Against Minnesota Donte really stepped up and we completely dominated, that should have been a 30 point win. Against the Lakers however nobody stepped up enough, leaving us a little dry offensively.

Now, we can hope Donte becomes that guy, because I think he has star potential. But thats a big gamble; he might not pan out or he might take too long, and the FO has to keep in mind the Arena talks. So using these two avenues available to us (FA and the Draft) we could seek that second guy.

So how does this relate to Gay? Personally I believe that second star has to be at SF or C. Martin, a decent second banana in his own right, didn't work out at SG, so it's probably best to have a Cisco or Beno type roleplayer be Reke's backcourt mate. Gay I think would make a good enough second option to Reke to form a championship level core. He's young, athletic, a good shooter and a terrific finisher around the rim. He's inconsistent defensively but has all the tools to be a lockdown type defender. I think he would be a great fit.

If we use our FA money on Gay then we'd have to search for an interior defender in the draft, but thats the topic of a different thread.

So in short, I would be happy with Gay as our big FA signing, even if we have to overplay slightly. He's a proven star in this league and we shouldn't try to wallow too long in mediocrity with Tyreke's ascendance and the Arena issue looming.

Tyreke/Beno
Garcia/Greene
Gay/Casspi
Landry/Thompson
????/Hawes

In time that could be a team that contends for a championship.

no thanks. don't want to spend that much on a wing.. we should be focusing our efforts and space on a legit big man. we have casspi and green filling the 3 slot. tyreke, omri, greene, thompson, hawes are going to want to be paid within a few years w new contracts. gay isn't that difference maker we need.

Absolutely correcto mi amigo.. I think a lot of these second and third tier players will end up accepting less money than they wanted, but more than they would get under the new agreement. So I think there will be some deals out there for the careful shopper.

I think we've got the talent on the wings kind of taken care of. Donte and Omri could be quite good, I can't guarantee either will be Gay good, but if you told me 3 years from now that the pair of them were averaging 30pts a game combined, I would not blink. Comparatively speaking the clear point to attack this offseason is the frontcourt. Which is tough I know, but that's the weakness.

First, he's about as close to a first tier player as you can get without being a first tier player. He's so close that he could be a first tier player. He's so close that he has All-Star potential. Second, I think it's much less important to determine a player of interest based on his position than his ability. Its relatively easy to find an ok player of a certain position, not so easy to find a player of excellent ability. You don't get to be that picky in the real world where you can willy-nilly grab the excellent player AND the position that you want. You get the outstanding talent, and THEN you go out and get the complements. We need another guy with All Star potential. Rudy Gay is that guy.

The argument that we can't get Rudy Gay because of Cisco, Greene, Noc, and Casspi should be turned on its head: That's exactly why we can get him. The Kings have some ammo to do this deal.

So then you have to be assuming that neither Casspi or Greene will turn out to be anything close to Gay. Either that, or your not content to wait and find out what we have in those players. I don't share your opinion that Gay is close to being a first tier player, but your entitled to your opinion. I certainly think he's a very good player, but to me it just doesn't make sense to go after a player thats going to demand big money at a position that I felt was settled for the future. Expecially in light of the fact that we need front court help. To me its like putting another layer of cement on a crack thats already been fixed while you leaking water somewhere else.

I think being very cautious would be prudent right now unless its a no brainer deal, when you have the new CBA looming in the future as well as a probable lockout.

Ain't going to happen.

He's the only tier 1 FA that more than likely will not sign with his current team, and the only one that would see an increase in career awareness from coming to Sac.

With Tyreke, Omri, and Cousins/Monroe/Favors or even (god-willing) John Wall and the max deal we can offer, I hope GP pushes with everything he has left in him.

No Thanks!

We have the SF spot covered with Casspi and Greene. We need to address that frontcourt and wasting our effort and resources on a small forward would be a waste.

Rudy is very good player but he is not what we need especially when we consider that someone WILL overpay for him significantly.

GP and the maloofs should show up at bosh's house at midnight first day of FA w a briefcase full of money and all access keys to the Palms Towers

another star draft pick and having plans for a new arena would certainly help the cause

I read that the griz are going to match anything, and usually that means they are GOING to match anything. I was big on the rudy gay signing, but after reading that i would much rather go for a FA we actually have a chance of signing. I don't want to tie up money with Gay while the Grizz take the full 13 days to match while David lee is already boarding a plane to LAC. I don't care who the kings get, or who they don't get as long as it makes the team better. and if not signing gay or any 2010FA makes us better, then do that.

I'm not sure, but I believe they shortened that 13 day rule. Not sure also what the time frame is, but I think they changed it because the team with the rights was dragging it out for the very reasons you stated.
