The vote off show this week had a lot of behind the scenes drama. They kicked Phil out because he had said Supernova's music wasn't very impressive in a local paper and that the main reason he entered the contest was so he could get exposure for his band (which probably sucks since he sucks).

That means the totally crazy Zayra lives another week. I became a fan this week because of that awesome blue outfit she's wore.

I didn't watch last week.

Tonight, however, I have to admit to being a little impressed by a couple of performances. They've still got a way to go, but I think there's a very good chance the new front singer for Supernova just might be a woman...but she won't be named Patrice. Yuk...

I'm still watching. I didn't really like tonight though. I get more amusement from Zayra than any of the real contenders and that does not bode well for Supernova.

Yay!~!

Jill is finally gone. And Josh just wasn't right. I'm surprised they got rid of two but not disappointed.

I think Patrice will be next.

I was actually able to catch bits and pieces of it yesterday, but don't know a whole lot about the contestants. who is favored to win? who is everyones favorite? that rendition of "creep" by radiohead was pretty decent i thought..

Lukas and Dilana are the favorites.
Magni and Storm are outside contenders.

Nobody else has a legitimate shot at this thing but that Zayra sure is fun to watch.

They have a very active discussion on the show at televisionwithoutpity.com as well. People usually post in the spoiler thread on Sunday after the tapings for the Tuesday show with who sang what song and impressions of the live show, things that get cut from the real show, etc.

I was going to post last night, but I realized that as an east coaster, it would spoil things for the rest of you. Toby, IMO, did fairly well. The group did not like Storm's rendition of "I Will Survive". I thought it was OK, but it sounded A LOT like Cake's cover.
The surprise is Zayra. Mostly because she is still there. Last night showed that she could definitely score a record with a Spanish label, but she's not Supernova material, and hopefully the voters start to realize this.
Dilana was solid as usual, and she still seems like the one to beat. Ryan can sing, but again, I don't see him with that group.

I think Storm's biggest problem is she's always trying to be someone she's not.

I, too, think Dilana is now the prohibitive favorite although I think Supernova really likes Lukas.

Thanks for not posting spoilers.

Lukas cannot sing. Based upon my own experience and training, the boy can only "growl and scratch" - he really struggled in various parts of his song and had to turn to falsetto. Personally, I think they're just being kind to him, because I would put him in the bottom three of people who are left (Zayra & Patrice are the other two), but this is also just my opinion.

I watched at the bar down the street last night with a very partisan Storm crowd. They went crazy when she hit the high notes and then were really upset when the band hated it. I didn't think it was all that special but not worthy of scorn either.

On the other hand I hated pretty much the whole show last night. I was a little distracted but the song selection which I had read beforehand was rather terrible and doesn't have anything to do with what Supernova is going to do.

I voted a bunch for Zayra, I know she's not right but she's fun and she deserves it for last night and we may as well get rid of Patrice and possibly Ryan and Toby first. None of them have a chance and Zayra's the only one that doesn't drive me up a wall or put me to sleep.

Well, as I said above, I have a dial-up connection. That's why I appreciate having a way to get the results that doesn't require broadband.

Dilana, Toby, Lukas, Storm, Magni, and Ryan are still left.

Ryan's performance was somewhat benign. Lukas received some positive feedback, but I hope he leaves soon. Storm did OK with a song that was not in her range, but it'll probably hurt her. Again, Dilana was the best, followed by Magni and Toby, IMO.

I think Dilana took a lot of flak for speaking what was, in essense, the truth about the other hopefuls. It's a shame it got blown out of all proportion. It made for excellent drama, however, and I think it showed that she'll be able to handle some of the pressures that will come her way should she get the job.

Your assessment of Ryan was absolutely spot on, Spike. "Benign" is the perfect word, and certainly not what a rock band wants to hear in conjunction with their lead singer.

And Storm just can't take it to the level she needs. She'll always be a club singer, IMHO. She just doesn't get the difference.

Wow. Lukas survived. I had no idea this was his first time in the bottom three - I had assumed he'd been there before. Oh well. Peole remaining:

Lukas
Dilana
Toby
Magni

My money's on Magni or Toby. I would have placed good money on Dilana about 2 weeks ago, but her original song wasn't all that great, and her calf injury may preclude her from touring.

The only concern I would have about Magni would be the whole road issue with his family.

I think, bottom line, Lukas is a little too punk rockish for Supernova. Toby just doesn't do much for me and I really thought Dilana might be able to step it up. I don't think original songs should count that much, because nowadays most bands don't write their own stuff anyway...although last year's winner is fronting INXS because they wanted to record his "Pretty Vegas."

I guess I should probably watch next week.

this is certainly not true. it would be accurate to say that most reality-tv manufactured artists don't write their own stuff, but its far too cynical--even for me--to hear people say that most modern musicians don't write their own music. current songwriters may not be equal to the caliber of those legendary artists like bob dylan, bruce springsteen, jackson browne, neil young, etc...but an original piece is an original piece, and there are plenty of amazing bands out there writing and recording amazing music. you just won't find many of them on tv, which is a bad place to search for good music anyways. ;)

Even the lame rock bands on MTV write their own crap, its really only the solo artist types that have entire albums written for them along with the occasional over the hill band in need of a hit like Aerosmith that will turn to someone like Dianne Warren for one.
